Oh, of course. Stronger than me is really lovely and although I've never seen her live, her live t.v. performances are so garishly shambolic and throaty. And above that really great. To go back to the Church/Winehouse Beat It performance. Amy's voice kinda veers all over the backing, like an R'nB Alec Ounsworth, shit and wonderful in equal measures. Church sounds so dead and together in comparison. All that staccatto enunciation and phrasing. I repeatedly go back to it on Youtube. It's also HILARIOUS.

I know, right?, Thursday, 8 March 2007 09:57 (seventeen years ago) link

Not to over-criticize Church. She's kindof like the straight man. No Church, no funny.

I know, right?, Thursday, 8 March 2007 09:59 (seventeen years ago) link

That's like "Puttin on the Ritz" from Young Frankenstein.

I would absolutely watch Charlotte Church and Amy Winehouse's Detective Agency.

Dude what is up with tha Pipettes hatin? I LOVE them (otherwise I wouldn't be going, obviously). Someone not liking something is not the same as them being shite either.

Thanks, if she doesn't cancel, I will stick around and check out Amy.

Saxby D. Elder, Thursday, 8 March 2007 19:25 (seventeen years ago) link

Yes, I know that is true, I just think they are completely rubbish. Sorry bout the overbearing-ness. Friends?

I know, right?, Thursday, 8 March 2007 20:15 (seventeen years ago) link

they are shite, not quite sure what they've got to do with Amy Winehouse like....

fandango, Thursday, 8 March 2007 20:17 (seventeen years ago) link

Like, they're both chicks

"unforseen circumstances" = crystal meth?

pinder, Friday, 9 March 2007 18:51 (seventeen years ago) link

yeah, friends, tot cool... (and my first on this board, I might add).

Yeah, I asked around and not many people could figure out why the Pipettes-- love em or hate em-- were on the bill with Amy. (I still haven't had a chance to check her out but I will definitely stick around to see her on your say-so).

The Pipettes have added 2 headlining gigs in the area since this one was booked, so those will probably be better for gettin your polka dot on anyway.

pinder on Friday, 9 March 2007 18:51 (59 minutes ago)

that would be guess number 2 on my top 5 think.

So, Back to Black was released here today, and they took "Addicted" off the record and put that Ghostface remix of "No Good"on instead. WHY?!? Ghostface is basically just screaming over the track, he's totally off beat.

The Brainwasher, Tuesday, 13 March 2007 18:56 (seventeen years ago) link

i hated her on the sandbox, i hate her here!

GOTT PUNCH II HAWKWINDZ, Tuesday, 13 March 2007 23:46 (seventeen years ago) link

I understand hating her media persona, but how can you hate the music? It's so... good.

The Brainwasher, Wednesday, 14 March 2007 00:03 (seventeen years ago) link

but see... it isn't. she doesn't even have a media persona to hate in the US. she's just another terrible british import that'll be gone and forgotten within a year (possibly scuffing lily allen's heels on her way out).

GOTT PUNCH II HAWKWINDZ, Wednesday, 14 March 2007 00:11 (seventeen years ago) link

Just saw her video on MTV this morning and been reading about her. She kinda sounded like Shirley Bassey in the video (that's good). The rhythm track was not that unique--standard retro samples--I had read real nice stuff about the production, but am not impressed (yet ?).

curmudgeon, Wednesday, 14 March 2007 02:20 (seventeen years ago) link

Saw her do "Rehab" on Letterman last night. I had never heard the song, and before I started paying attention I could've sworn she was singing, "They tried to make me Puerto Rican and I said no, no, no!"

I thought the US release was going to keep "Addicted" and add the acoustic take of "Love is a Losing Game." Either way, it's better than the Canadian version.. or at least the promos they sent out. Mine just has "Addicted" lopped off and it's just ten tracks long without anything else added.

Quinn Omori, Wednesday, 14 March 2007 09:15 (seventeen years ago) link

Did anyone else notice her slight stumble on Letterman, right at the start of "Rehab"?

one month passes...
Jazz singer Amy Winehouse is leading the field for the Mojo awards with three nominations including song and album of the year.

Winehouse, who was named best British female artist at the Brit Awards earlier this year, is followed by the Arctic Monkeys with two nods.

The Sheffield band are shortlisted for best song and best live act, where they face veteran rock group The Who.

Bob Dylan's US chart topper Modern Times is in the running for best album.

'Sky the limit'

Reader of Mojo magazine and users of their website handed two nominations to Texas rock group Midlake, in the best album and breakthrough act categories.

Other nominees in the song of the year category are The Gossip for Standing In The Way of Control and Scottish band The View for Same Jeans.

Singer Johnny Cash is posthumously nominated for catalogue release of the year, for the reissue of his 1969 concert at San Quentin.

This is his second nomination in a row in the category, while he gained two further nods in last year's shortlist.

The Mojo awards ceremony will take place in London on 18 June, at which the magazine will bestow a number of honours including the Hall of Fame and lifetime achievement awards.

Editor-in-chief Phil Alexander said of Amy Winehouse: "Now the sky is the limit for her. There is nothing that can stop her apart from herself."

Editor-in-chief Phil Alexander said of Amy Winehouse: "Now the sky is the limit for her. There is nothing that can stop her apart from herself."

dave marsh: "You know who she really sounds like? That faux jazz singer the Brits shipped over here for a spell, Cleo Laine (who did a Porgy and Bess with Ray Charles that might be the worst Porgy ever done solely due to her contributions). Or if you want kinder, maybe Shirley Bassey. ... Would ONE of the radio stations and critics who’ve fawned all over this clumsy pastiche have played it if the name on the cover was Bettye Lavette and the picture of a woman Bettye’s age? Maybe one; it’d be a lot better record of course."

Lawrence the Looter, Thursday, 10 May 2007 02:25 (sixteen years ago) link

Because older blacker women make better music, of course?

forksclovetofu, Thursday, 10 May 2007 04:37 (sixteen years ago) link

Not too fond of her, but that is because of her annoying vocal style, and Aretha Franklin is just as annoying as her.

Is Phil Alexander the former Kerrang editor that had a really shitty late night talk show on ITV in the late 90s? Or am I thinking of someone else?

Dom Passantino, Thursday, 10 May 2007 08:53 (sixteen years ago) link

same chap.

Bocken Social Scene, Thursday, 10 May 2007 09:06 (sixteen years ago) link

Dom Passantino, Thursday, 10 May 2007 09:11 (sixteen years ago) link

impossible to like both metal and classic rock or whatever it is mojo cover, of course

lex pretend, Thursday, 10 May 2007 09:13 (sixteen years ago) link

Yeah, a lot of Bob Dylan fans are big on KoRn, they pretty much have exactly the same fanbase.

Dom Passantino, Thursday, 10 May 2007 09:15 (sixteen years ago) link

i can think of at least one person i know who loves bob dylan and korn

lex pretend, Thursday, 10 May 2007 09:17 (sixteen years ago) link

Well that's me proven wrong then. Teenage girls who make up the lion's share of Kerrang's readership actually closet Clapton fans.

Dom Passantino, Thursday, 10 May 2007 09:18 (sixteen years ago) link

I got confused for a second and thought the article was about the Mobo awards.

I know, right?, Thursday, 10 May 2007 10:19 (sixteen years ago) link

Mojo-approved, it figures - about as close to modern r&b as they'd get, I assume.

"Rehab" is an ok novelty one-off, but Winehouse is otherwise loathsome, retreading the hoariest soul/lounge clichés. I'm genuinely mystifed that Lex is on this one.

sw00ds, Thursday, 10 May 2007 13:02 (sixteen years ago) link

Her music is beyond stodgy.

Jon Pareles in the NY Times
http://www.nytimes.com/2007/05/10/arts/music/10wine.html?th&emc=th

excerpt:
Ms. Winehouse has grown up on hip-hop’s version of R&B, which chops the old dramatic arcs of soul and gospel into sound-bite hooks and showy, almost randomly applied slides and turns. Her voice glints with possibility: tart, smoky, ready to flirt or sob, and capable of the jazzy timing of a Dinah Washington or the declamation of soul singers like Martha Reeves and Carla Thomas. What she doesn’t have, and may not want, is the kind of focus the older singers brought to their songs. Onstage Ms. Winehouse added a British layer of detachment with a performance that switched between confession and indifference.

It's the Cleo Laine comparison that puzzles me. Other than moderately bizarre hair they have nothing in common.

And I love "Back to Black". It's a great album.

everything, Thursday, 10 May 2007 16:44 (sixteen years ago) link

Marsh is right on with "clumsy pastiche," but he comes off a little clumsy himself with that strained comparison to Bettye Lavette (stupid to take it out on Winehouse because radio doesn't usually play new music by really old people). He's expressed in the not-too-distant past a fondness for r&b of the Aaliyah/Whitney/Mary J. stripe, so he'd have been smarter to draw a comparsion that way, I think. (Then again, is it in r&b circles that Winehouse is getting noticed? Or is she more an "alternative" thing here?)

A critic in a local weekly just drew a comparison between Winehouse and "American Idol"--not one particular vocalist, of course, but the entire idea of it. His point, I believe, was that, finally, here's someone who can really belt it out! I think that was his point; I kind of saw it coming, so I didn't finish the paragraph.

sw00ds, Thursday, 10 May 2007 17:02 (sixteen years ago) link

I don't know anything about Cleo Laine's music, but I think Marsh is just playing his "British-people-don't-get-it" card, which he can be a bit too strenuous about.

sw00ds, Thursday, 10 May 2007 17:10 (sixteen years ago) link

"British layer of detachment"--this strikes me as SUCH a cliché, and not even that accurate.

sw00ds, Thursday, 10 May 2007 17:14 (sixteen years ago) link

xxpost. Cleo Laine's ouvre is very similar to Shirley Bassey except she's also really into scatting. ie. fuck all like AW. She's aka "Lady Dankworth" lol.

everything, Thursday, 10 May 2007 17:17 (sixteen years ago) link

I hear the Shirley Bassey in Amy. As for Marsh's comments, I can also see him now after reading about Winehouse using the Dapkings as her backing band, saying "Hmmmm, Sharon Jones, older-African-American woman backed by the DapKings gets only alt-indie attention while Brit white woman gets major label support, video in rotation, and plays big festivals."
