Sonic Youth on film doesn't come across so well, does it?

well, in knowing him, I was less likely to criticize. He was a really nice guy and even though Tical sucked I nodded along with all my fellow Taco Bell employees and told him it was the shit.

We'll just agree to disagree.

For what it's worth, the most groundbreaking hip hop group to come from NYC since 1990 is Company Flow, easy.

(tical didn't suck! neither do mobb deep!)

(x-post)You are nuts.

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Tuesday, 6 April 2004 04:19 (twenty years ago) link

Nuts...for Nurse! I'm psyched!

(psyched for Ghostface's new solo shit too tho)

roger adultery (roger adultery), Tuesday, 6 April 2004 04:20 (twenty years ago) link

I mean nothing Company Flow did is half as inventive as Tical (and I like Company Flow.)

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Tuesday, 6 April 2004 04:21 (twenty years ago) link

besides, alex, being a West Coaster, weren't you doing the Heiroglyphics thing when all this was going down? All up on Extra Prolific and Pep Love?

ok, ok, low blow...

roger adultery (roger adultery), Tuesday, 6 April 2004 04:22 (twenty years ago) link

Tical is WEAK, man. It doesn't compare to ...36 Chamberz in any way. It's not BAD by any means (not as bad as things would get, anyway) - just tepid. Lifeless. Dull. Poorly produced. Even the cover was lame.

What's inventive about it aside from RZA's production?

roger adultery (roger adultery), Tuesday, 6 April 2004 04:24 (twenty years ago) link

Hahaha no I was in college at the time listening to Sonic Youth.

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Tuesday, 6 April 2004 04:25 (twenty years ago) link

Touche

roger adultery (roger adultery), Tuesday, 6 April 2004 04:25 (twenty years ago) link

I don't get the lifeless complaints at all. That album always seemed pretty bounce-y to me (admittedly in a kind of weirdly fried almost low-fi sort of way.) But yeah it is the most conventional sounding of the 1st-Gen Wu albums (again excepting the production, which is maybe next to the ODB album, probably the least conventional sounding.)

Hmmm.

"A three-girl punk band from Glasgow in Scotland, Pink Kross were discovered by Bill Bartell: the Californian who has spent two years putting together the Germs tribute album (which features 1992's cut "The Holez" by Courtney Love and onetime Germ Pat Smear). Bartell was also the man who "broke" cult group Shonen Knife."

Pink Kross don't come across particularly well there either.

seven months pass...
Any news on when their pre-Dirty videos might be coming out?

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Tuesday, 9 November 2004 00:58 (nineteen years ago) link

the Screaming Fields VHS was supposed to be out on DVD around the same time as the YPB and Corporate Ghost DVDs, obviously that didn't happen but I'd imagine it's on the way.

this thread is so depressing. why can't ILM have a single fucking thread about even someone like Sonic Youth without it turning into a bunch of hand wringing about whether certain people like hip hop enough?

Al (sitcom), Tuesday, 9 November 2004 01:16 (nineteen years ago) link

i hate hip hop

Spinning Down Alone You Spin Alive (ex machina), Tuesday, 9 November 2004 02:04 (nineteen years ago) link

I was bemused at that sidetrack myself. I did get the Corporate Ghost DVD the other week and am most happy.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Tuesday, 9 November 2004 02:14 (nineteen years ago) link

you like Nelly, though, Jon.

Al (sitcom), Tuesday, 9 November 2004 02:21 (nineteen years ago) link

Huge SY fan. not huge on the Corporate Ghost DVD. Never seen TYTPB. Look forward to it.

Although I am SY defender -- and always will be -- I must say that 'A thousand leaves' is a shit album. mostly offensive and shit. I've tried so hard to like it. but it is shit.

OK,yes, the Youth are geeks. I know.

One last thing: Alex in Nyc is going to wake up one day and realize that he has always been a closet SY lover. Yr in denial Alex, face it.

Haha, I love Sonic Youth (my favourite band, I suppose) but I think a Thousand Leaves is my favourite album of theirs.

Kevin Gilchrist (Mr Fusion), Tuesday, 9 November 2004 02:23 (nineteen years ago) link

yeah I really like a few songs on A Thousand Leaves.

Al (sitcom), Tuesday, 9 November 2004 02:24 (nineteen years ago) link

actually at this point all I really need off it is tracks 4-6.

Al (sitcom), Tuesday, 9 November 2004 02:25 (nineteen years ago) link

that's funny, Kevin. I like 'Sunday' and 'six hits of sunshine.' but some of the other songs -- ouch.

The TAO that can be Posted is not the TAO! (The Tao that can be Posted is), Tuesday, 9 November 2004 02:25 (nineteen years ago) link

You can't actually like track 1, can you?

The TAO that can be Posted is not the TAO! (The Tao that can be Posted is), Tuesday, 9 November 2004 02:26 (nineteen years ago) link

Yeah, I can understand why some people hate it, but for me it has this strange, dreamy journey to it - I think it's probably because I was taking lots of drugs when it came out.

Oh, yeah, I do. I know, I know "just a kitten" - but besides that...

Kevin Gilchrist (Mr Fusion), Tuesday, 9 November 2004 02:27 (nineteen years ago) link

first bit about album, second about contre le sexisme.

Kevin Gilchrist (Mr Fusion), Tuesday, 9 November 2004 02:28 (nineteen years ago) link

SHE's JUST A KITTEN!!!

The TAO that can be Posted is not the TAO! (The Tao that can be Posted is), Tuesday, 9 November 2004 02:29 (nineteen years ago) link

If you ignore the 'kitten' lyric - which is an Alice in Wonderland reference anyway, so I let it off - the lyrics are good. The note Kim sings on the "and..." is haunting, and there's all that great mechanical clunking in the background. It's a good track.

describe the touch, no it's the thought
it's warm and yellow and has a ruffle
it's warm and yellow and...
he's so quiet i forgot he's there
and i think here i am.
oh alice, come back he's just a kitten...
he's just a kitten
a thousand leaves for your disguise fall on
the sky and looking up from down is a sea to
realize the leaves are falling up and down
up and round.
and this is from my heart to you
a crazy wind will stir me too and contre de la
sexisme
i am with you.

Kevin Gilchrist (Mr Fusion), Tuesday, 9 November 2004 02:35 (nineteen years ago) link

The Video for "Sunday" is fucking great.

Spinning Down Alone You Spin Alive (ex machina), Tuesday, 9 November 2004 02:40 (nineteen years ago) link

Is it just the voice on "Contre le Sexisme" that people hate? Because I could see that being a problem but the music's actually pretty cool (going by memory), kind of hearkening back to their earlier 'early industrial'-influenced sound.

sundar subramanian (sundar), Tuesday, 9 November 2004 03:12 (nineteen years ago) link

Vocals are usually 80% of the problem with any SY song.

Wait. Ninety.

miccio (miccio), Tuesday, 9 November 2004 03:13 (nineteen years ago) link

bullshit. i wouldn't count any of them among my favorite singers or lyricists but what they do is a big part of the band's overall charm.

Al (sitcom), Tuesday, 9 November 2004 03:20 (nineteen years ago) link

eh...not for me (of course this is IF I have a problem with an SY song, there are songs I just like without qualm).

miccio (miccio), Tuesday, 9 November 2004 03:36 (nineteen years ago) link

well, now that you put it that way, yeah, i kind of agree.
