you speak moldavian(is that what it's called?), cathy?

Lovelace (Lovelace), Sunday, 21 May 2006 21:48 (seventeen years ago) link

haha, no, those words are spanish.

Cathy (Cathy), Sunday, 21 May 2006 21:49 (seventeen years ago) link

oh, yeah. I just assumed those were words in moldovian and meant something else. :)

Lovelace (Lovelace), Sunday, 21 May 2006 21:53 (seventeen years ago) link

conferring, we think choco = chocolate.

Cathy (Cathy), Sunday, 21 May 2006 21:53 (seventeen years ago) link

Unless you misheard "Choco"

Brigadier Lethbridge-Pfunkboy (Kerr), Sunday, 21 May 2006 21:55 (seventeen years ago) link

The Moldovan blokey looked like Sezer from Big Brother, and that put me off too much to listen to his song.

I also liked the German C&W dudes, especially the drummer who was quite scarily intensely into the whole thing. Las Ketchup's choreography was like a shit Girls Aloud before rehearsals to actually do any co-ordination. Their outfits were awful too.

ailsa (ailsa), Sunday, 21 May 2006 21:56 (seventeen years ago) link

His name is Arsenium! He used to be in a Romanian boyband called O-zone and he is my new crush, I think.

Love Me, Love Me, he says. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7Xe3QDfNBp4

Cathy (Cathy), Sunday, 21 May 2006 21:58 (seventeen years ago) link

Apparently the German band's drummer is a well-known comedian over there. I don't know why he was the drummer of choice for this group though.

Tuomas (Tuomas), Sunday, 21 May 2006 21:58 (seventeen years ago) link

The UK entry was a joke. Was he a comedian too?

Brigadier Lethbridge-Pfunkboy (Kerr), Sunday, 21 May 2006 22:11 (seventeen years ago) link

On second hearing that Loca song is quite nice, though not really original. I especially love the rapper, representing the Moldovian rasta community.

Tuomas (Tuomas), Sunday, 21 May 2006 22:14 (seventeen years ago) link

(x-post)

Yeah, what was up with the UK guy? Was he supposed to be a real rapper?

Tuomas (Tuomas), Sunday, 21 May 2006 22:14 (seventeen years ago) link

We quite liked the UK guy, in context (context being "it's the Eurovision Song Contest, FFS").

ailsa (ailsa), Sunday, 21 May 2006 22:15 (seventeen years ago) link

Daz Sampson has had about six top 40 singles under various names, most recently "Out Of Touch" by Uniting Nations.

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Sunday, 21 May 2006 22:16 (seventeen years ago) link

Good god, he's been responsible for a couple of horrible singles the memory of which I had successfully repressed until now:

I thought the UK tune was actually pretty good, I even liked the rapping (especially the lyrics), but surely that guy was an actor or something?

Tuomas (Tuomas), Sunday, 21 May 2006 22:17 (seventeen years ago) link

I recognised him from bus stop's "kung-fu fighting" which must be about 8 years ago

so, it was O-zone that did the track that there was a video of matthew perpetua singing along to

RJG (RJG), Sunday, 21 May 2006 22:21 (seventeen years ago) link

i like their use of the word "arockalypse"

The Independent have an article on Lordi comparing them to [Heavy] Rock artists of the past

DJ Martian (djmartian), Sunday, 21 May 2006 22:49 (seventeen years ago) link

Hehe, that was funny, I'd never seen this clip before. The original video fo "Dragostea Din Tei" is pretty groovy too:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rqHvIKMV14w&search=dragostea%20din%20tei

I think it's pretty much the most perfect pop song of the 00's. Arsenium's solo career hasn't convinced me yet (and how come he's changed countries from Romania to Moldova?).

(xx-post)

Tuomas (Tuomas), Sunday, 21 May 2006 22:50 (seventeen years ago) link

I am bored of Lordi already. But I still can't get enough of LOCA.

Arsenium is Moldavian (is that the adjective?) but O-zone launched in Romania. Dragostea Din Tei is the best thing ever.

Cathy (Cathy), Sunday, 21 May 2006 22:52 (seventeen years ago) link

Hehe, that was funny, I'd never seen this clip before.

Wait, someone in Finland, the most wired nation in the universe that isn't South Korea, had missed the Numa Numa guy.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Sunday, 21 May 2006 22:53 (seventeen years ago) link

Isn't Matthew Perpetua some ILM poster?

Tuomas (Tuomas), Sunday, 21 May 2006 22:58 (seventeen years ago) link

Yeah, but that's not him. RJG is just being a total douchenozzle.

Deric W. Haircare (Deric W. Haircare), Sunday, 21 May 2006 23:07 (seventeen years ago) link

Sampson is best known for his commercial dance music, often reworking older songs. His credits include songs such as Out of Touch (as a member of Uniting Nations), Rhinestone Cowboy (as a member of Rikki & Daz) and Kung Fu Fighting (as a member of Bus Stop).

Ugh I remember them. I so glad he got hardly any votes now.

Why do we keep putting up joke acts? Didn't Jordan try to enter once?
Why can't a decent act enter for a change?

Hard Rock Hallelujah Lyrics

Hard Rock Hallelujah!
Hard Rock Hallelujah!

The saints are crippled
On this sinners' night
Lost are the lambs with no guiding light

The walls come down like thunder
The rocks about to roll
It's The Arockalypse
Now bare your soul

All we need is lightning
With power and might
Striking down the prophets of false
As the moon is rising
Give us the sign
Now let us rise up in awe

Rock 'n roll angels bring that Hard Rock Hallelujah
Demons and angels all in one have arrived
Rock 'n roll angels bring that Hard Rock Hallelujah
In God's creation supernatural high

The true believers
Thou shall be saved
Brothers and sisters keep strong in the faith
On the day of Rockoning
It's who dares, wins
You will see the jokers soon'll be the new kings

All we need is lightning
With power and might
Striking down the prophets of false
As the moon is rising
Give us the sign
Now let us rise up in awe

Rock 'n roll angels bring that Hard Rock Hallelujah
Demons and angels all in one have arrived
Rock 'n roll angels bring that Hard Rock Hallelujah
In God's creation supernatural high

Wings on my back
I got horns on my head
My fangs are sharp
And my eyes are red
Not quite an angel
The one that fell
Now choose to join us or go straight to Hell

Hard Rock Hallelujah!
Hard Rock Hallelujah!
Hard Rock Hallelujah!
Hard Rock Hallelujah!

Rock 'n roll angels bring that Hard Rock Hallelujah
Demons and angels all in one have arrived
Rock 'n roll angels bring that Hard Rock Hallelujah
In God's creation supernatural high

Hard Rock Hallelujah!

I remember seeing Emma Bunton doing one of her perky MOR numbers one of the years we hosted it, and compared to whatever the fuck our entry was that year she came across as the best performer in the world singing the best song in the world. We have loads of artists and songs who could win it, we just don't employ them for some reason.

Or maybe that's just me getting all misty eyed about the Great British pop song or something.

RJG (RJG), Sunday, 21 May 2006 23:20 (seventeen years ago) link

We should've entered Pulp or Blur one year.

Finland deserved to win, altough I was rooting for Lithuania. I actually thought "We Are The Winners" was the best song in the contest - catchy as fuck. The Russian guy and Macedonian chick were insanely hot. The UK entry was a bit of a sad affair. Terry Wogan is the man - his commentary during the points tally was so OTM it hurt.

Andrew (enneff), Monday, 22 May 2006 04:47 (seventeen years ago) link

I can't imagine Eurovision without Terry.

Brigadier Lethbridge-Pfunkboy (Kerr), Monday, 22 May 2006 11:45 (seventeen years ago) link

The Latvians were excellent! The robot and the red heart shaped balloon......no idea what it was all about of course.....but definately cheered me up! Quite catchy too I thought.

indolent girl (indolent girl), Monday, 22 May 2006 11:57 (seventeen years ago) link

Apparently the rockers of Turkey and Finland found each other:

http://www.sibeltuzun.net/modules/NS-Resim_Galerisi/gallery/eurovision_yari_.urovision_yari_final/resim8.jpg

Let me repeat again that she was the hottest female performer there. And only the Armenian guy and Arsenium might've competed in overall hotness.

Sorry, the second pic was supposed to be this:

this was probably pointed out on the other thread but Terry was actually talking over performances (during the quiet bits) this year which hinted of 'arrogance' a little!

Konal Doddz (blueski), Monday, 22 May 2006 12:30 (seventeen years ago) link

He always does that, doesn't he?

I was listening to it on the radio this year, and I rather liked the Radio 2 commentary.

I was looking for this thread on ILM!

And Tuomas I can't believe that you've never seen Numa Numa before!

He can be as arrogant as he likes, when it comes to Eurovision the man's a god.

chap who would dare to be a nerd, not a geek (chap), Monday, 22 May 2006 13:36 (seventeen years ago) link

i don't remember him talking during performances in previous years, but maybe he did.

Konal Doddz (blueski), Monday, 22 May 2006 13:41 (seventeen years ago) link

I have never heard him talk over performances either, surely it could be construed as CHEATING (not giving the teams he talked over a fair crack of the whip). The independent Eurovision aducicator (OFEURO) should look into it.

Pete (Pete), Monday, 22 May 2006 13:48 (seventeen years ago) link

I'm sure he has always done this.

Brigadier Lethbridge-Pfunkboy (Kerr), Monday, 22 May 2006 14:03 (seventeen years ago) link

I thought Daz bottled it a bit in the performance - "Teenage Life" on record is terrific. Shades of tATu a couple of years ago.

Loved the Latvians - a real surprise.

Also loved the German country-pop.

Wife was keen on the Lithuanians and it worked a lot better than I thought it would.

But Lordi got our 25p.

Tom (Groke), Monday, 22 May 2006 14:06 (seventeen years ago) link

Celebrate:

http://newsimg.bbc.co.uk/media/images/41668000/jpg/_41668192_lordiget.jpg

And the sweet fruits of victory:

The Finnish city of Rovaniemi says it will name a square after monster rock band Lordi, its surprise Eurovision Song Contest winners.

The mayor of Rovaniemi - the band's hometown, located on the Arctic Circle - said the municipality wanted to honour its sons for their success.

The new square bearing Lordi's name will be part of the redevelopment of Rovaniemi's city centre.

The town - the regional capital of Lapland - lies on the Arctic Circle and describes itself as the home of the real Santa Claus.

In a statement issued to Finnish media the official Rovaniemi Santa Claus said: "Lordi's victory shows us that with hard work and belief in your own abilities even the greatest dreams come true."

Ned Raggett (Ned), Monday, 22 May 2006 18:51 (seventeen years ago) link
