As a native Californian I thought I was used to earthquakes (was around in SF for the '89 Loma Prieta quake), but my heart is pounding. I'm in the city next to the epicenter.

I was taking a shower on the 2nd floor (lots of swaying) when it happened. I finished up fast in case there were strong aftershocks. Phew. No damage in the house. No gas smells or power/water outage. My housemates, who are from out-of-state, freaked out.

Melinda Mess-injure, Tuesday, 29 July 2008 20:18 (fifteen years ago) link

Wheeeeeeee!

One broken vase, couple of books off the shelves, some really pissed-off rabbits, some sleeping other critters, some terrified kittens. Oh, and the dishwasher slid out a bit.

Me? Was standing in the doorway and considering giving-up atheism. This is an OLD building and we're up a few stories, so things really moved.

MsLaura, Tuesday, 29 July 2008 22:53 (fifteen years ago) link

I somewhat dread to imagine what my apartment looks like, but it's nearer the ground and a more recently constructed building. Still I figure there's a few books on the floor at least.

Ned Raggett, Tuesday, 29 July 2008 22:53 (fifteen years ago) link

this building was built in 1929 (i'm on the 2nd floor) and the ONLY sign that a quake hit here was that the medicine cabinet door popped open. nothing fell, nothing broke...

get bent, Tuesday, 29 July 2008 23:07 (fifteen years ago) link

it's a good thing bookshelves exist. otherwise it'd be a lot harder to get a feel for a quake's magnitude.

Ned Raggett, Friday, 9 January 2009 04:17 (fifteen years ago) link

hmmmm. what is this Miss missing? "Been Dazed and Confused"....Is there a non ILX chatz happening or was that part of a previous EQ? Just accused (not really accused, who am I to judge) Ned of being drunk, as it looked like he posted that he was...but then again I am skittish for the last couple of days and it's possible this has led to my total and complete mind/brain meltdown. I feel all ILX newbie now *blushes* and hopes someone finds it cute and not obnoxious.

Notz from a soon-to-be-divorced, LA Spinster (is that a legal term?) & soon-to-be-paranoid/schizophrenic-if-this-keeps-up LA native, surely this MUST be a legal term:

-1st they take your TVs away
-Then they shake the ground
-Then they take away the cat
-and soon you're on your way
to the looney bin...where the men in their smooth white coats....
<a href=";>they're coming to take me away, ha ha, ho ho....

Wiggy Woo, Friday, 9 January 2009 05:06 (fifteen years ago) link

maybe I should be posting to ask a drunk now, since as soon as the "earth moved" we slammed our martinis, and I think that I might be....
DRUNK!!!!!

Wiggy Woo, Friday, 9 January 2009 05:16 (fifteen years ago) link

note: the above-referenced drunk thread does not make me any less scared out of my mind about earthquakes...

and the cat is now completely wasted, passed-out-dead-to-the world-from martini-overload, "CAT-A-TONIC" (she hates tonic!!)

I am sorta "home-alone" scared yet anticipating the "Big One" and freakin' out myself, (and I didn't drink ANY tonic)!

I demand a series of drunken wiggy woo posts to accompany all california earthquake revives from now on

TOMBOT, Friday, 9 January 2009 05:55 (fifteen years ago) link

it's been downgraded to 4.5
no offense wiggy but it was over in less than 3secs, one a few months ago was much scarier

velko, Friday, 9 January 2009 06:11 (fifteen years ago) link

This quake was less than 5 miles from me! Even then, I barely felt it.

naus, Friday, 9 January 2009 06:18 (fifteen years ago) link

Hi Velko & naus, tonight I am a home-alone-alarmist, i felt the bigger one a few months ago and made a similar fuss. no offense taken....anytime the earth even jiggles for one second, I freak out (yes I am a native and born in Santa Monica)

ha ha ha, Tombot, don't make me scare you with my drunken posts for they often involve photos; and just last month my photo post horrified the lady of ILX, Ms. ENBB. She will fookin hunt me down and kill me if I again post my middleage sorryazz self to ILX. The traffic generated was scandalous and caused internet freeze/meltdown, for no damn good reason, it was all hearsay, based I guess on Ms. ENBB! ROFFLES!!! nothing funny here, move along...

Wiggy Woo, Friday, 9 January 2009 06:53 (fifteen years ago) link

Feeling semi*-vindicated-
b/c cal tech is saying that this was an unusual quake causing stronger waves that may result in stronger waves in certain areas. Whatever the heck that means... (and I love Dr. Lucy Jones and Dr. Kate Hutton) this fellow was not anything except a spokesperson for Caltech... nervously yours, wiggy. **please be here when the horrid real thing eventually happens**
