i've come to the conclusion already that this game is a bit turd and tiresome.

Ste, Thursday, 28 February 2008 20:41 (sixteen years ago) link

three months pass...

I've recently stopped playing it. I think in theory it is complex and fascinating and has a persistent-world element in that the politics/economics of the game are player-driven and vital, but in practice, it requires a good deal of time-committment to see any of that stuff in effect.

I knew it wasn't a casual player's game, little did I know circumstances would turn me into a casual player within a few months of taking it up.

If anyone is thinking of joining, I'd strongly recommend finding a guild to join, but not a mercenary guild unless you are able to play several nights a week and don't mind a lot of time spent playing 'hunt the wabbit'.

Yeah I have a friend who is super-into this game, but apparently all he does is pilot his mining ship around and shoot lasers at space rocks / space ice? I'm not really sure what he's getting out of it.....

I'm intrigued by the economic aspects of the game and being able to margin / commodity trade is neat but it would probably a) take up too much time and b) be eerily similar to my day job...

EVE Online once again makes traditional space opera completely obsolete. I never want to play this game, hearing the stories third-hand really does make them sound like they're in a galaxy far, far away.

Again, I don't understand any of it, but it sounds awesome whatever it was.

Elvis Telecom, Friday, 12 July 2013 12:07 (ten years ago) link

A week ago, an Eve spy disbanded a major alliance from the inside and made off with up to 400 billion ISK. Meticulous planning, months of deception and the advice of GoonSwarm’s finest espionage experts all contributed to what seemed like the crime of the century.

Well, here’s another. On Sunday night, a spy embedded within Pandemic Legion led a fleet of supercarriers into an ambush in Odamia space. A 309 billion ISK Revenant, one of only three in existence, was destroyed so quickly that it made alliance figurehead Jeffraider “kind of giddy”.

why even bother writing "hard" science-fiction after that?

Eve players stage giant online space battle

29 July 2013 Last updated at 07:05 ET

Space battles are a fact of life in Eve Online

One of the largest video game space battles ever seen has taken place in the Eve Online game.

For five hours on 28 July about 4,000 players took part in the epic battle between two of the game's biggest alliances.

The two sides were fighting for control of resources within several of the game's solar systems.

Time was slowed down in the virtual universe to help servers cope with the huge numbers of players and ships.

The battle pitted spaceships belonging to CFC against those from the Test Alliance in a region of space known as 6VDT. It ended in victory for CFC.

Eve Online is a detailed space simulation that sees players fly spaceships through thousands of virtual star systems, seeking resources they can use to prosper.

The resources can be found on planets and in asteroid fields or acquired through piracy or other underhand means.

Ships vary in size from small trading vessels to giant capital ships.

Erlendur Thorsteinsson, one of Eve Online's developers, confirmed in a tweet that the battle was the biggest ever seen in the game.

At its peak the battle involved 4,070 pilots and their ships.

Game time was slowed to 10% of normal to lighten the load on servers working out who was shooting at whom.

The pivotal moment in the battle took place two hours in, when CFC sent in a large fleet of capital ships - the most powerful in the game.

Their arrival prompted many members of the Test Alliance to try to flee.

By the end of the conflict thousands of ships are believed to have been destroyed.

Their destruction has a real-world cost as the game's internal currency can be bought with real money.

So far no-one has worked out the total value of the ships destroyed, but a far smaller battle earlier in 2013 laid waste to far fewer spacecraft that in total were estimated to be worth more than $15,000 (£10,000).

The giant battle was the culmination of a long campaign by CFC to force the Test Alliance out of 6VDT.

Some have speculated that it may be the only the first of a series of conflicts that seek to extinguish TEST.

"These kinds of conflicts are business as usual in Eve but this one was bigger than normal," said James Binns from the PCGamesN website.

Mr Binns said several big events had made the last few weeks in Eve absorbing to watch. During that time a giant ship was hijacked and then destroyed in a carefully co-ordinated ambush and a huge in-game corporation was disbanded and its resources stolen by a spy from a rival faction.

"It's a fascinating online world and its constant drama is nothing like any other game," he said.

The foe is doing morale pings with LOTR quotes. We're not going to bother with a morale ping because we're in the system first, we have seven Baltecfleets, one AHAC fleet, two Bomber wings, one FuckYouFleet, and yeah.

OK, here's a battle report from a CFC Fleet Commander. It's borderline bulldada, but mad respect to the dedication.

(Editor's Note: This battle report is the personal account of Vily, a Goonswarm Federation Fleet Commander and the leader of one of the CFC Megathron fleets in the battle of 6VDT.)

Today, ladies and gentlemen, we saw the largest engagement in the history of video games.

I say that because a battle involving over 4000 pilots is now over, with the embers of our enemies' wrecks still smoldering (even though they technically can't) in the cold, dark space of 6VDT-H in Fountain.

This battle is the culmination of what will likely be called the Fountain War, a war that has raged for two months and represents one of the most dynamic conflicts of EVE Online in the last two years.

When we (the CFC, or ClusterFuck Coalition) decided to reinforce the 6VDT-H station, we did so merely on a whim. TEST Alliance had shown an unacceptable level of resistance to one of our daily European timezone siege groups; the farther they let us push, the farther we shall push. In a surprising turn of events, TEST Alliance decided to time the station timer for European prime (afternoon US timezone) instead of the usual Australian timezone strategy, which has, while providing little success in the past, at least allowed them to resist at a moderate level.

We didn't think particularly much of the timer; 6VDT-H is not anywhere near the level of strategic importance it once held. Its use as a transit hub is mostly deprecated, and it no longer represents an active military base for more than a fraction of TEST's forces. However, the morning after the initial attack, we awoke to a surprise: All TEST operations for the following two days had been canceled. All forces were to prepare for a defence of 6VDT on Sunday, the 28th of July. This was where they would hold the line. This was where they would end our advance.

So: we in the CFC prepared, as we do for all operations. We analyzed the locations and timers and organized our allies and membership. We were told that TEST Alliance, along with their returning allies N3/Nulli (altogether known as N3ST), would make a stand. This would be their Alamo. We found weaknesses. N3ST's moon control was lacking, allowing us, with moderate effort the day before, to gain complete moon supremacy, thereby ensuring that there would be no "high ground" (a moon-based tower) for N3ST to fall back to. This would limit their options if they chose to deploy super-capital class assets into the fight. Preparation and organization is a hallmark of CFC strategy, and for a battle as important as this, no opportunity for advantage would be passed up.

The morning of the fight we had some chats, but the FC group in charge of the CFC war machine are old dogs for this type of fight. We know the mechanics of herding our people, moving them at best speed, and getting there to the destination in best order. Before a single broadcast had gone out, 2300 people sat ready in 4-EP (the CFC staging base). More would log-in over the course of the day. The N3ST staging systems amassed just under two thousand pilots, leaving them slightly outnumbered, but not by a margin anywhere near what we had expected.

Elvis Telecom, Tuesday, 30 July 2013 10:53 (ten years ago) link

One more...

At approximately 5 minutes left of the station timer, hostile cynosural fields were spotted in system and the enemy (N3ST) forces took titan bridges into system. It's hard to describe the sense of anticipation one feels when preparing for something of this grand scale, and certainly the pulse of myself and many other of the fleet commanders rose. The fight was coming; it was happening.

Our position on that station was the best equivalent to a proper formation in EVE I can describe. With each member of each fleet orbiting a single point (the station), we created a spherical wall with a roughly 80km edge from side to side. Spread out this much, we were almost entirely invulnerable to bombers, while at the same time within range from both sides for our Megathron guns to target any ship that came at us. This was the stance we chose, and doing so surrounding the enemy station. The ball was in their court. Come to us, we said; they had to, so they did.

The fight, like most fights, didn't happen as the N3ST forces would have wished. A bomber group under Dabigredboat started the fight by initiating a bomb run against one of the hostile fleets, forcing them to stay in position or warp to their only aligned point - the station. Rather than accept their instant destruction under a hail of bombs, they took the next worst choice: engage warp and prepare to fight. Rather than let their comrades die alone, several of the other TEST fleets entered warp as well. There was no going back.

The first fleet to land was a segment of the electronic warfare group avoiding the bomb run, but it would be followed in such close succession by Prophecy and AHAC groups that it could have hardly been more than a minute between warp-ins. Now we were truly engaged. Fire was exchanged, and the massive groups of railguns carried by the Megathron fleets spun into action. At the same time, the Prophecy groups began dropping and assisting their sentry drones and focusing their huge salvos of damage.

Naturally, the record for the largest and most costly single engagement in EVE history was expected to stand for some time.

It didn’t.

In fact, B-R5RB’s record was shattered a little over two months later by players on EVE Online’s other game server, Serenity, which hosts Chinese players and is operated by CCP partner TianCity.

Eve provides something no other MMORPG does, a persistent universe where people who have little control in their real lives can rise to meaningful social prominence. That alone could guarantee its persistence for decades to come, even with little investment in updates or promotion.

https://www.polygon.com/2020/9/15/21436851/ever-online-world-war-bee-2-interview-the-mittani-vily

In 2014, an Eve Online player by the name of Vily was a fleet commander for one of the most powerful groups in the game. After helping to lead thousands of other players on successful campaigns across the virtual galaxy, he informed his in-game boss that he needed to step away for a real-world military deployment. When he returned just a few months later, Vily learned that he had effectively been laid off.

“When I came back,” Vily told Polygon during an interview last week, “they were like, ‘No, we don’t really need you anymore.’ So I said, ‘All right. If you’re going to ignore the contributions I’ve made over these four or five years, I’ll go do something else somewhere else. And I’ll enjoy tearing you down, if that’s the game you want to play.’”

Five years later, Vily is a fleet commander once more. This time he’s in charge of one of the most massive fleets in gaming history. Tens of thousands of player-owned accounts have rallied to his flag. The target of his virtual conquest? None other than his former employer, the notorious Alex “The Mittani” Gianturco.

Multiple sources inside and outside the conflict tell Polygon that the pieces are in place for an epic confrontation, one that could spell the end of Goonswarm — one of the most powerful factions in Eve Online.

Eve Online fans literally cheer Microsoft Excel features at annual Fanfest

There aren't many games for which built-in integration with Microsoft Excel would be a major feature whose announcement would draw literal cheers from fans. But Eve Online showed itself to be the exception when developer CCP announced coming Excel integration during its Eve Fanfest keynote this morning.

Through an official partnership with Microsoft, CCP said it is creating a JavaScript API that will allow players to "seamlessly export data from Eve Online" into the popular spreadsheet program. That "will help players access and calculate everything from profit margins to battle strategy, making day-to-day Eve operations easier to execute," the company said in a press release.

"It's not April fools; this is real," Eve Online Creative Director Bergur Finnbogason said on the Fanfest stage, receiving bemused laughter in response. "I'm not lying—we actually reached out to Microsoft and they were like, 'Oh my god, we love Eve!'"

EVE Online player uses obscure rule to pull off the biggest heist in the game's history

Back in 2017, we learned about the biggest heist in EVE Online history: A year-long inside job that ultimately made off with an estimated 1.5 triillion ISK, worth around $10,000 in real money. But now another EVE player claims to have pulled off a heist worth significantly more than that—and with significantly less work involved.

The 2017 heist, like so many of EVE's most interesting stories, relied primarily on social engineering: Investing months or years of time into grooming a target before pulling the rug out from beneath them. But redditor Flam_Hill said this job was less bloody: Instead of betrayal, this theft was dependent upon learning and exploiting the "shares mechanic" in EVE Online in order to leverage a takeover of Event Horizon Expeditionaries, a 299-member corporation that was part of the Pandemic Horde alliance.

Using a "clean account with a character with a little history," Flan_Hill and an unnamed partner applied for membership in the EHEXP corporation. After the account was accepted, Flan_Hill transferred enough of his shares in the corporation to the infiltrator to enable a call for a vote for a new CEO. The conspirators both voted yes, while nobody else in the corporation voted at all.

This was vital, because after 72 hours the two "yes" votes carried the day. The infiltrating agent was very suddenly made CEO, which was in turn used to make Flan_Hill an Event Horizon Expeditionaries director, at which point they removed all the other corporate directors and set to emptying the coffers.
