I LOVE "GUNBOATS," JC.

Tim Ellison (Tim Ellison), Monday, 18 October 2004 01:34 (nineteen years ago) link

when i was younger i loved the trouser press guide -- it pointed the way to lots of shit to explore -- a springboard of sorts -- later i would become more disenchanted with it, realizing i couldn't stand some of its critical paradigms, etc. in case of the swell maps particularly, boy did they get it fucking wrong. what sort of moron would write, "In existence for most of the '70s, England's Swell Maps proved that a group of intelligent, fearless, versatile people can record five LPs and produce little of any lasting value."? Time has proven Mr. Mark Fleischmann to be more than wrong.

listening to Trip right now for the first time. real stoked so far.

brock (brock), Tuesday, 19 October 2004 16:27 (nineteen years ago) link

I had three of the Swell Maps CDs on Mute. I sold back two in a purge a few months ago, but Trip is the one I kept. Fine, fine stuff.

I pulled out ...Jane From Occupied Europe the other night because of this thread. Awesome. I should really listen to them more often.

Roy Williams Highlight (diamond), Thursday, 21 October 2004 23:34 (nineteen years ago) link

That was one of the ones I sold. Maybe I should have kept it though. I just never listened to it that much.

o. nate (onate), Thursday, 21 October 2004 23:37 (nineteen years ago) link

yeah, neither had I! Big mistake on my part though, 'cause at least the other night, it really hit the spot. It's got a lot of the instrumental/experimental pieces plunked down right in the middle of the tracklist, so it's an oddly flowing record. It's got a bunch of the proto-Sonic Youthy drone/strum-two-guitars-for-a-couple-minutes bits too..

I picked up the Electric Warrior Sessions double cd from my public library last weekend. Went to a cafe and glanced at the liner notes and read Nikki's essay about Marc's influence on his life. I may or may not get around to listening to the discs.

swell maps rock

flopson, Saturday, 16 February 2019 00:30 (five years ago) link

i swear i saw a swell maps thread get bumped yesterday

this is the strongest deja vu i've gotten in a while

ciderpress, Saturday, 16 February 2019 00:44 (five years ago) link

Has anybody heard the Secretly Canadian remasters? I finally got the Mute Marineville at Xmas and I don't think it has been remastered in decades. Just thought I'd grab it while it was at hand relatively cheaply.
So would be interested in finding out if I am missing out on a great deal with the sound on those Secretly Canadian versions. Just don't seem to be very easily come by.
Was hoping thread revival might be word of new reissues or something.
