Sleeper is great too, although the final trade isn't out yet. Also, it lacks dinosaurs.

Some pretty interesting extras, too.

As for da Broob, Authority: Revolution is getting my love. The first trade's out, too.

(DETOUR is rub. All four Catwoman trades are OK. I liked Scene Of The Crime when it came out, I think there's a collection. ACL is varying in quality but probably a good third-tier comic for its time overall.)

"Criminal" is very enjoyable... I've not read the graphic novel collection, but the last two issues of the floppy have been great.

And some of the essays in back on noir etc. are actually pretty great (like the one on Touch of Evil)!

I think this is very much one where you want the issues rather than the collection; the latter seems not to have the essays or the ads for luridly covered hard-boiled novels like mama used to make.

CRIMINAL is usually quite good. I thought #4 was going to be the best of them, but I wasn't wild about how it all came together in the end. So, book 2 is still out in the lead.

I'm enjoying Incognito, though Mrs The Real Dirty Vicar has pointed out that the lady character is the same lady character that appears in everything Brubaker writes.

Yeah, the last Criminal arc felt a little... rehashed, and he seems back to full speed here. Also: flying cars!

Re: his "lady characters," I still think Catwoman is the best thing he's done: it has a sweet, playful edge -- almost Jaime Hernandez-like -- that I haven't seen in much of his other work.

I think he struggles to keep things interesting in the long-term, too: Captain America, Daredevil, Criminal -- all started strong, and kinda tailed off, or at least get carried by the art.

Mmm, I actually liked the last Criminal arc, for all the generic Brubaker lady action. But I take the point.

With Catwoman, now that you mention it, it maybe seemed Hernandez-esque by having an artist whose work looked a bit Hernandezy.

I bet as long as sales are strong those two guys are just gonna go from one project to another. Whether it's called Sleeper or Criminal or Incognito or whatever I'll keep buying for the forseeable future.

I remember buying Sleeper #1 and thinking it was only so so. But I bet if I were to go back and read it then I would love it.

Brubaker's intro to Scalped Vol. 4 is one of the most infuriatingly wrong-headed things I've ever read. Are his Noir Essays at the back of Criminal as awful as this? "depiction of this once-proud people staggering toward their inevitable demise feels very real to me" ARE YOU SERIOUS?

I think the noir essays in Criminal are usually by some pal of Brubaker, not him himself.

I actually don't read the essays, as I prefer the comics so much more. (Same usually goes with forewords/afterwords, et al.)

CRIMINAL v.5 was solid, but then I also think that Tracy Lawless is one of the best characters he's come up with. INCOGNITO's first two or three issues were great and then it made an abrupt turn that I couldn't endorse, but the art and colors were still very very pretty.

CATWOMAN is great until Cameron Stewart leaves, though really it reaches a high point with #19 or so. The Gulacy issues made me politely set the book down and walk away.

Brubaker usually writes some sort of carefully modest/egregiously self-aggrandizing end note at the end of every issue of his self-published books. Typical comics writer prose.

Come to think of it, graphic novel introductions seem to bring out the bad writer in everyone who's ever produced one (see especially anything published by DC/Vertigo). I usually ignore/skim intros, but I imagine they somewhat reinforce comics' geeky image to a non-comics reader.

(Having said that, David Lloyd's gloomy Gus intro to V for Vendetta is kind of hilarious.)

Bru's episode in the first season of Westworld S1 was one of the two really good ones I thought.
