$30 good?

Chuck_Tatum (Chuck_Tatum), Wednesday, 7 September 2005 17:35 (eighteen years ago) link

I think so, esp. since it's now the only way to get the full size (non-digest) version.

Sleeper is great too, although the final trade isn't out yet. Also, it lacks dinosaurs.

Jordan (Jordan), Wednesday, 7 September 2005 17:44 (eighteen years ago) link

Cool, I love Y and Machina, so that looks promising.

Chuck_Tatum (Chuck_Tatum), Wednesday, 7 September 2005 17:48 (eighteen years ago) link

$30 is for 18 issues! And if you get it off of Amazon, it's something like $24, which is the same price for all three digest TPBs together.

Some pretty interesting extras, too.

As for da Broob, Authority: Revolution is getting my love. The first trade's out, too.

Leeeeeeeee (Leee), Wednesday, 7 September 2005 18:13 (eighteen years ago) link

Would that be a good one to start with if you (i.e. me) have never read an issue of the Authori-tay?

Jordan (Jordan), Wednesday, 7 September 2005 18:32 (eighteen years ago) link

I think it'd be ok to jump into it w/o extensive prior knowledge since A:R recapitulates a lot of the backstory, and in the opinion of some (but not your humble Leee, no sir), bites off a number of the older stories. Though, thinking about it, Brubaker actually is explicitly reusing Ellis's ideas. But whatebber, it's fun stuff!

Leeeeeeeee (Leee), Wednesday, 7 September 2005 18:46 (eighteen years ago) link

buy AN ACCIDENTAL DEATH and THE FALL before anything else, as they are his bestest stuff

(DETOUR is rub. All four Catwoman trades are OK. I liked Scene Of The Crime when it came out, I think there's a collection. ACL is varying in quality but probably a good third-tier comic for its time overall.)

Glasses, ginger moustache, by-the-book attitude yet frequently allied with an emotionally driven renegade...

I've just discovered that James Gordon is Ned Flanders!

Ian John50n (orion), Thursday, 8 September 2005 04:16 (eighteen years ago) link

Captain America is my favourite comic right now.

Huk-L (Huk-L), Thursday, 8 September 2005 13:49 (eighteen years ago) link

I actually like Brubaker's autobiographical comic Lowlife a lot. I think he only did 5 issues. Whatever the end result was collected in trade paperback form later. It also gives you a good sense of Brubaker as an artist -- and proof of why he should stick to writing. IMHO, Detour is a really weak attempt to get the Lowlife vibe back.

ng-unit, Friday, 9 September 2005 10:15 (eighteen years ago) link

I really enjoyed Complete Lowlife (as the collection was called), too. In the big picture, it's pretty standard autobio indie cartoon, with a little lower than average self-loathing quotient. And yeah, stick to writing. But I'd had no idea that was his background (indie cartooning).
Almost all of my indie comics tastes have come, one way or another, via Batman. Which somebody (WILL BROOKER) could do an interesting piece on. Like how despite being a underpants-endorsing lackey of one of the world's biggest and most ravenous multimedia corporations, Batman is still a cool mofo with street cred.

Huk-L (Huk-L), Friday, 9 September 2005 13:45 (eighteen years ago) link

Another Lowlife fan here. I also really liked his Deadenders for Vertigo. Only lasted 25 issues or so, but I liked the post-apocalyptic Quadrophenia meets the OC kind of vibe.

Looking forward to Daredevil...

David N (David N.), Friday, 9 September 2005 22:29 (eighteen years ago) link

I have a signed copy of Detour, didn't meet him though, and I'm not actually sure if I read it. I too liked Lowlife. Think I will check out Captain America.

"Criminal" is very enjoyable... I've not read the graphic novel collection, but the last two issues of the floppy have been great.

The Real Dirty Vicar, Monday, 2 July 2007 13:22 (sixteen years ago) link

agreed

Jordan, Monday, 2 July 2007 16:01 (sixteen years ago) link

And some of the essays in back on noir etc. are actually pretty great (like the one on Touch of Evil)!

Jordan, Monday, 2 July 2007 16:01 (sixteen years ago) link

I think this is very much one where you want the issues rather than the collection; the latter seems not to have the essays or the ads for luridly covered hard-boiled novels like mama used to make.

is anyone reading Incognito? seems pretty decent so far, basically criminal + pulpy superhero stuff.

Ømår Littel (Jordan), Tuesday, 31 March 2009 20:32 (fifteen years ago) link

Yup. I expect a big twist next issue.

Zero Transfats Waller (Oilyrags), Tuesday, 31 March 2009 20:35 (fifteen years ago) link

CRIMINAL is usually quite good. I thought #4 was going to be the best of them, but I wasn't wild about how it all came together in the end. So, book 2 is still out in the lead.

Matt M., Tuesday, 31 March 2009 20:56 (fifteen years ago) link

I'm enjoying Incognito, though Mrs The Real Dirty Vicar has pointed out that the lady character is the same lady character that appears in everything Brubaker writes.

The Real Dirty Vicar, Tuesday, 31 March 2009 22:27 (fifteen years ago) link

three months pass...

I'm still enjoying Incognito.

The Real Dirty Vicar, Friday, 17 July 2009 12:36 (fourteen years ago) link

Yeah, the last Criminal arc felt a little... rehashed, and he seems back to full speed here. Also: flying cars!

Re: his "lady characters," I still think Catwoman is the best thing he's done: it has a sweet, playful edge -- almost Jaime Hernandez-like -- that I haven't seen in much of his other work.

I think he struggles to keep things interesting in the long-term, too: Captain America, Daredevil, Criminal -- all started strong, and kinda tailed off, or at least get carried by the art.

Chuck_Tatum, Friday, 17 July 2009 15:54 (fourteen years ago) link

Mmm, I actually liked the last Criminal arc, for all the generic Brubaker lady action. But I take the point.

The Real Dirty Vicar, Monday, 20 July 2009 13:54 (fourteen years ago) link

With Catwoman, now that you mention it, it maybe seemed Hernandez-esque by having an artist whose work looked a bit Hernandezy.

The Real Dirty Vicar, Monday, 20 July 2009 13:55 (fourteen years ago) link

I've been liking Incognito as well.
Is Criminal no longer a going concern?

Is Criminal no longer a going concern?

New mini's coming out in September, I think.

R Baez, Monday, 20 July 2009 17:15 (fourteen years ago) link

I bet as long as sales are strong those two guys are just gonna go from one project to another. Whether it's called Sleeper or Criminal or Incognito or whatever I'll keep buying for the forseeable future.

For other uses, see Cornhole (disambiguation). (Oilyrags), Monday, 20 July 2009 18:05 (fourteen years ago) link

I remember buying Sleeper #1 and thinking it was only so so. But I bet if I were to go back and read it then I would love it.

Brubaker's intro to Scalped Vol. 4 is one of the most infuriatingly wrong-headed things I've ever read. Are his Noir Essays at the back of Criminal as awful as this? "depiction of this once-proud people staggering toward their inevitable demise feels very real to me" ARE YOU SERIOUS?

Well, because whatever happened changed him. (Dr. Superman), Monday, 13 September 2010 16:25 (thirteen years ago) link

I think the noir essays in Criminal are usually by some pal of Brubaker, not him himself.

The New Dirty Vicar, Monday, 13 September 2010 17:04 (thirteen years ago) link

I actually don't read the essays, as I prefer the comics so much more. (Same usually goes with forewords/afterwords, et al.)

CRIMINAL v.5 was solid, but then I also think that Tracy Lawless is one of the best characters he's come up with. INCOGNITO's first two or three issues were great and then it made an abrupt turn that I couldn't endorse, but the art and colors were still very very pretty.

CATWOMAN is great until Cameron Stewart leaves, though really it reaches a high point with #19 or so. The Gulacy issues made me politely set the book down and walk away.

Matt M., Tuesday, 14 September 2010 15:36 (thirteen years ago) link

Brubaker usually writes some sort of carefully modest/egregiously self-aggrandizing end note at the end of every issue of his self-published books. Typical comics writer prose.

Come to think of it, graphic novel introductions seem to bring out the bad writer in everyone who's ever produced one (see especially anything published by DC/Vertigo). I usually ignore/skim intros, but I imagine they somewhat reinforce comics' geeky image to a non-comics reader.

Chuck_Tatum, Tuesday, 14 September 2010 15:53 (thirteen years ago) link

(Having said that, David Lloyd's gloomy Gus intro to V for Vendetta is kind of hilarious.)
