respiration again

sam500, Tuesday, 5 February 2008 00:41 (sixteen years ago) link

I vividly remember going to the store after school in 7th grade and having enough money to buy 2 out of this, Aquemini, and the Love Movement. I chose the last 2 (a halfway good decision) and taped this off my friend.

Anyways, Definition, that song was sooo huge for my Rawkus lovin' ass in grade school.

Definition, no doubt.

Vol. 2... Hard Knock Life came out that day, too! My brother got that and the Tribe, I either had a promo of the Black Star already or got it shortly afterward.

respiration seems like the pinnacle of backpacker rap to me

Twice Inna Lifetime is cool, too. I love Hi-Tek's guitar shit.

Jordan, Tuesday, 5 February 2008 21:04 (sixteen years ago) link

"Definition" for the beat, class.

Haha, such a fine example of where my taste was a decade ago that I wouldn't even have thought about buying the Jay-Z.

gotta go with respiration in a narrow win over astronomy with definition in 3rd

RE:DEFinition 3

I like this but what a weird choice for a favorite track. Shame "K.O.S. (Determination)" didn't get any votes, definitely in my top 3.

two years pass...

was about to poll this album

max, Thursday, 16 September 2010 06:04 (thirteen years ago) link

i saw talib speak in college, he said that the reason he was off beat for his first like six albums is because he was using rhymes hed written down before he had any beats to rap over

which is like

*smh*

talib

max, Thursday, 16 September 2010 06:07 (thirteen years ago) link

five years pass...

this is sad

apparently, Talib was beaten when visiting "Freetown Christiania" - he's interpreting the assault as racially motivated, locals are suggesting he was punished for taking pictures of drug dealing...

one year passes...

the new black star album is called no fear of time, consists entirely of years-old tracks produced by madlib, and is officially only available behind a paywall, so fuck it without relent and listen to it on youtube while you can.

It’s not good. So stale

he was eating Vaseline like it was bunch of cheeseburgers (Spottie), Wednesday, 4 May 2022 01:05 (one year ago) link

absolutely agreed.

feels like way more of a mixtape than a proper album. just beats and rhymes. not awful, but they sound so unenthused the entire time. guess it was recorded in makeshift studios (hotel rooms and the like) and it sounds like it. the black thought feature was quite welcome and the last four tracks are really the meat of the album. hard to consider this a proper follow up, but i guess that's technically what it is. nothing embarrassing happens, it's just all so meh.
super disappointing. 2.5 mics.

Yah just absolutely nothing memorable here. Not a single hook or melody of note.

The original album is one of my favorite albums.

well then, this will be a huge disappointment for you too =/

One of the most overrated rap albums of all time to me. It’s held up by a few stellar tracks.
