Deep Purple: The Poll

Well it was apparently kind of unfair of me as well to vote, for I haven't heard (and most prolly ain't going to) about thirty or so titles from the bottom half of that list. Which is mainly live platters.

Neither have I heard them all but there's always some smartass who says "Where the fuck is Total Abandon: Live in Australia?" so I'm not taking any chances. The number of live albums is frankly astounding. I love Highway Star as much as anyone but I don't need more than..er..2 versions.

I wish we could vote for the worst as well. There's a few stinkers there.

I've never not owned a copy of Deepest Purple. Yeah, best-of's are for grandmothers, but everything ya need is right there (`cept for "Hush, sadly).

I could easily vote for Burn, and in fact just may.

I voted for Made in Japan, mostly because "Child in Time" is so friggin epic on that live record. In Rock and Fireball and Machine Head all rule.

The first one, for the influence it had on Kula Shaker.

That version of Child in Time is sick. On the recent remaster, they have Speed King on there, and holy shit is it insane. Something fucked up was going on in the crowd during that song.

Deep Purple In Rock without a doubt. The most gloriously wanky metal album I know of, with the possible exception of Made in Japan or Deep Purple In Concert or one of the dozen other live ones I've never heard. I've almost never heard any of its songs on radio, which I certainly can't say about the uneven Machine Head.

Never heard anything after House of Blue Light.

"Deep Purple in Concert"

If this is the 2 CD BBC Live record, this is really killer. The first CD is Peel Show right after Gillan joined the band and the second CD is right as Machine Head was coming out. Definitely worth tracking down if you are a big fan of Made in Japan. On the first CD they really stretch out with some really crazy interplay in between Jon Lord and Richie Blackmore. It is like some early 70s heavy metal/Allman brothers jazz jams.

I went ahead voted for Live from Japan, but Machine Head is pretty great especially with 'When a Blind Man Cries' which should have had closing the album in the first place.

Fireball is a weird record. That loopy countryish tune cracks me up.

Burn is killer, but I remain very attached to Perfect Strangers.

Yeah, it looks like I was the lone Burn vote above. I'd go Made in Japan second, it kind of renders Machine Head irrelevant.

No. Nothing like Burn. This is the Deep Purple album to get if you want to hear Blackmore getting bored and Coverdale doing long-winded bloozy man calisthenics in anticipation of Whitesnake. Great cover art always sucks people in though. One expected a lot of dramatic thunderstorm hard rock. How sad that it never showed up.

Still, "Stormbringer" and "You Can't Do it Right" are first class jams.

I think "Mark III (whatever the fuck "mark" means") is fucking great.

Had to look up "Bananas" to find out what the hell that was. (Mark XIV or thereabouts?) Wonder who voted for that one? (Or the "Concerto", which I've never heard & been curious about for years)

Bananas is really good! So is Abandon, and Rapture Of The Deep is worth hearing, too. (I would've still voted for either In Rock or Fireball had I seen this though, probably.)

finally listening to 'concerto' etc and it's way better (at the least the first movement so far) than i've been led to believe all these years. how people dog this but rep hard for sufjan stevens is beyond me

The of Concerto... that's on the turntable in The Mother and The Whore sounded good. Blackmore shredding IIRC.

I picked up the In Rock remaster the other day. Chuck was right in Stairway: they did sound like a Brit MC5!

Bumped because I'm listening to Machine Head right now and I'm marvelling at the amazing drumming. Ian Paice = legend.

The 1970-1973 line up of Deep Purple were fucking white hot, and it's such a shame that they couldn't keep that line-up together for longer.

Consensus seems to be that it was pretty much all Richie's fault. I do rate Burn higher than the previous Gillan record, but certainly Mk. II might have stuck it out a while longer if Blackmore wasn't such a pill.

Paice is tremendous though. Kind of a Fleetwood Mac sort of thing with Purple, only instead of the bass/drums as the only constants it's keys/drums. Hard to go wrong with Lord/Paice tho, even that first Whitesnake record is pretty good.

Yeah, what they really should have done is taken a break after Machine Head and recharged their batteries. There's some great stuff on the Coverdale-led records, but I think Mk. II could have gone on to make some incredible music. For me, Purple Mk. II is on an equal footing with Sabbath and Zeppelin.

Rising-era Rainbow were a fucking white hot band too, but Blackmore were dicks to those too. Particularly the keyboardist and the bassist. Cozy Powell and Dio left because Blackmore wanted to get away from everything that actually made Rainbow a great rock group.

yeah every time I listen to that run it's always even better than I remembered. a band whose best work has aged very well, like first four Sabbath albums well.

The production on Machine Head is impeccable, IMO - so clear, punchy and powerful.

A couple of weeks ago found the remastered cd of 'In Rock', then yesterday the 2cd version of 'Made In Japan'.
And loving them, even 'Smoke on the Water' sounds insanely massive.
Used to really hate that song as my parents ran a roadhouse pub/inn place in the late 80s and every sunday we would put on a local guitarist who used backing tapes.
The big finale was always 'Smoke On The Water', and all his biker mates would mosh about.
Truly painful experience.

But, these 2 cds are excellent.
Just need to get lucky and find Burn, Fireball, and Machinehead now.

Nothing tops Made in Japan but In Rock and Machine Head are both worth checking out.

Who Do We Think We Are is underrated imho.

i have already got 'in rock' remaster with the Roger Glover 'remixes' (one of which is listed as 'unedited') no less.
suspect there is a story behind the inclusion of those.

The 80s reunion records are worth checking, especially the first one 'Perfect Strangers' which is one of their best albums they did.

This collection of BBC live recordings I think is better than Live in Japan. It's come out in a few different titles. I got this one.

I've got the two-disc of that. The '70 disc is them in jumbo jam mode, and the '72 disc is basically a dress rehearsal for Made In Japan (which was recorded a few months later, iirc).

“Anyone’s Daughter” is such a twisted song. I’d been listening to a lot of Dick’s Picks Dead and realized that song was prime for extended live jams.

On their second album, The Book of Taliesyn, Deep Purple interpolate "Also sprach Zarathustra" by Strauss at the beginning of "River Deep Mountain High". I'd like to suggest that the previous song on the record, "The Shield", also references this piece, with its piano melody alternating between the minor and major third of the scale. Jon Lord must have really liked 2001.

If you are looking for more jumbo jam mode from '70, I highly recommend Scandinavian Nights (I believe later reissued as Live in Stockholm).
