Is anyone still following up to date this blog? It's been almost two years since I last checked in and I'm overwhelmed by all the music in there right now. Anyone who cares to recommend me anything I missed in the past years/months?

I forgot how good this blog is. Has there been any chat about Francis Bebey's 'African Electronic Music 1975-1982' anywhere on here?

i think 69 always used to play some bebey on his KUSF show, with some other stuff not a million miles away. worth checking for tips.

I was enjoying the Bebey comp until I got to the song where he goes on about beating his wife for not obeying him :(
This is a great recent Awesome Tape: http://www.awesometapes.com/2012/04/manka-le-phallang-mokhosi-side-1.html

I heard him play his cassettes live a little while back in W. DC. It was great. He has a label now, that has re-released two tapes.

I can't get on this site at work. Any idea why "Websense SEX is filtered?"

I need to catch up on the site a bit too. The Kweysha Seta tape he posted Jan 6, 2011, is a favorite. Just alien, wild. Highly highly recommend.

The next Awesome Tapes From Africa LP release is by Hailu Mergia, the Ethiopian one-man-band accordion/keyboardist extraordinaire. Hailu made his name in Walias Band and later went on to do some visionary solo recordings. Hailu Mergia's beautiful and surprising 1985 foray into traditional Ethiopian songs via analog synth, electric piano and accordion has been remastered and will be available June 25 on LP/CD/MP3/C60.

ATFA event in Toronto got cancelled after accusations of racism for all-white DJ line-up
Story about the cancellation:http://www.chartattack.com/news/2014/01/24/awesome-tapes-from-africa-show-toronto-cancelled/
Response from the organizer, dude who runs the DIY venue and was to be one of the DJ's:http://www.doubledoubleland.com/tldr.html

the last graf of that chartattack.com blog post seems like a desperate non-sequitir to me
― espring (amateurist), Friday, 28 March 2014 21:32 (ten years ago) link
Both the article and the response get pretty muddled, but I think there's actually lots to think about with this. It's too bad it's so hard for people to talk about race.
