ysi? lool'd.

jimn (jimnaseum), Sunday, 21 January 2007 20:31 (seventeen years ago) link

if you start your set with it i'll end the night with it. it suits both and no one will mind us playing it twice i'm sure. xp

who is cortney tidwell herself? from the original i'm thinking some kind of wispy, gauzy singer-songwriter. voice is - lazy comparisons alert - somewhere between liz fraser and bjork. the guitar line which pearson threads through the first few minutes really reminds me of something - massive attack? - but the way it builds on that is quite incredible, blossoms would be a better word.

She actually makes downbeat indie country!

best track: Mama from the Mountain

reminds me of 90s 4ad/guernica act Insides circa the Euphoria album

Is there a myspace or someplace I can hear at least a stream of this remix?

the exemption of her LP from the vast majority of year-end lists borders on the criminal...

hank (hank s), Sunday, 21 January 2007 22:58 (seventeen years ago) link

re: the exemption of her LP from the vast majority of year-end lists borders on the criminal...

Due to the fact that Cortney's music is virtually unknown in the US and Canada, in the UK her media profile is a lot higher.

I understand the album will finally be released in the US in 2007.

DJ Martian (djmartian), Sunday, 21 January 2007 23:22 (seventeen years ago) link

the u.k. (london) sunday times named "don't let stars" CD one of their ten best of '06. she releases the usa CD on 2/20. i saw her play the springwater, famed nashville dump, the day before christmas, and she was really good. one of the people who worked on "don't let stars" was a guy named brian siskind, a nashville musician who makes cool ambient shit under the name fognode. also on the record are ryan norris and kurt wagner of lambchop. tidwell's mother was a country singer named connie eaton, who seems to have made a record for *stax* in the '70s during the memphis label's brief flirtation with country. anyway, it's a good record and her EP is also nice. she's not exactly unknown here in nashville, but she's not exactly a household name, either.

edd s hurt (ddduncan), Monday, 22 January 2007 00:58 (seventeen years ago) link

also, her music is not country--the comparisons w/ bjork and thorne are accurate enough; she also sounds a bit like some lost tropicalia artist, gal costa in nashville in the grey rain. at any rate, i predict her record will do pretty well in '07 end-of-year voting....

edd s hurt (ddduncan), Monday, 22 January 2007 01:01 (seventeen years ago) link

Listened to the full length version on the way in, I wasn't expecting that bit in the middle where it breaks down into nothing but drone.

Matt DC (Matt DC), Monday, 22 January 2007 10:00 (seventeen years ago) link

Haven't heard this remix but the source LP is one of my favourites from last year.

she also sounds a bit like some lost tropicalia artist, gal costa in nashville in the grey rain

Yes, I can hear some of that too.

Michael Jones (MichaelJ), Monday, 22 January 2007 21:55 (seventeen years ago) link

Where can one hear this?!

toby (tsg20), Monday, 22 January 2007 22:17 (seventeen years ago) link

I've had the full-length for some time, but only recently picked up the EP that preceded it...in addition to the Insides comparison above (which I soundly support), I would also add that I'm reminded of a more "acoustic" rendition of the AFX remix of Seefeel's "Time To Find Me"...(the "fast" version, if you're keeping score)...

hank (hank s), Monday, 22 January 2007 22:36 (seventeen years ago) link

The Martin Buttrich remix of Tracey Thorn - It's All True is awesome too.

this has been in my head constantly the last two days, but i've only heard the 12min version and must get the edit (as well as the T Thorn). i like the original version too.

blueski, Tuesday, 27 February 2007 14:56 (seventeen years ago) link

i've never heard the edit!

buttrich rmx of thorn seconded, but i love the whole original thorn album too.

no joy - and i didn't nominate it for ilx poll because of it's original release in '06

blueski, Thursday, 3 January 2008 01:03 (sixteen years ago) link

What the hell, are you mixing it with something during the beginning or has the version I've been listening to totally different?

mehlt, Thursday, 3 January 2008 01:06 (sixteen years ago) link

yeah it's from a mix i put together (linked to on the DJ mixes thread) so you hear the end of 'Get Innocuous' at the start plus a bit of Map Of Africa at the end

blueski, Thursday, 3 January 2008 01:08 (sixteen years ago) link

Whew, I thought I had been listening to some sort of incomplete version.

Listening to eyes are at the billions right now" off her record from 07. Whoa. This is doing my head in.If I had heard this before, I would've posted this song in my best of list from 07. Highly recommended to anyone who wants to hear what happens when country meets shoegaze ??? Amazing.

oscar, Sunday, 2 March 2008 00:31 (sixteen years ago) link

yes! so great. I didn't hear that album until the very end of 2007, but I love it to death and was pushing it incessantly on everyone I know for a couple months.

bernard snowy, Sunday, 2 March 2008 17:41 (sixteen years ago) link

she's playing out some, saw her last night at Nashville's Exit/In.

whisperineddhurt, Sunday, 2 March 2008 18:10 (sixteen years ago) link

how was it? I'm having a hard time imagining how this material would translate live.

bernard snowy, Sunday, 2 March 2008 18:43 (sixteen years ago) link

I'd seen Cortney before, at a small club, and she was really effective, playing her acoustic and Omnichord, and singing her songs. The Exit/In's sound system was wack Sat. nite--all bass, no snare drum, her voice lost amid the haze, so it didn't come across too well. However, she's fantastic, one powerful singer, and so the (brief) set was mainly her gettin' crazy and wailing over the repetitions of two guitars/bass/drums/keys w/ little subtlety. No "La La" melodicism on hand, and that's the stuff--like, actual songs; Cortney could easily be the Gal Costa of Nashville--I myself like the best, altho I pretty much love the EP and full-length she's done.

not really hearing much of a song in those two clips to be honest. heard this on the radio today also, minus the maddeningly busy video... still not convinced.

not very Björk-y either, although recently, feh. That's probably for the best.

fandango, Sunday, 10 May 2009 18:43 (fourteen years ago) link

17 Horses reminds me of PJ Harvey rather than Bjork. Something about the way she only uses a very small number of notes and really bellows them out against those massive incessant chords.

Enormous Epic (Matt DC), Sunday, 10 May 2009 20:38 (fourteen years ago) link

Watusi already sounds a bit like its own Jacques Lu Cont or Alan Braxe remix. This stuff is really great - I'd always assumed Cortney Tidwell is normal unremixed form was a lot more folky than this. Maybe I should listen to the album.

Enormous Epic (Matt DC), Sunday, 10 May 2009 20:42 (fourteen years ago) link
