I hope Morpheus isn't taking this time to install spyware. And why are they calling it "preview?"

Enjoy using Morpheus much in this household, though the fickleness of the search function can get to me -- you type in a search word, get 15 results, hit enter again for fun and somehow get 100.

Morpheus can also be very disturbing. A few years ago you could read a person's favorite band list and get a pretty good idea of what they were like, how long they'd been into a particular style of music, if they were "your kind of person" -- now that every one has the internet, it means squat. For example, I ran a search on Les Savy Fav, zeroed in on the guy with fastest bandwidth, began downloading, and decided to check out his collection. Pretty hip stuff -- rare Pavement gigs, Belle & Sebastian, Plastikman, the usual indie suspects -- and then, as I got further down his list into the other media types..... literally megs and megs and megs of child pornography. I can't even type out the filenames here. Believe it.

FatNick has always maintained that there is a link between Belle & Sebastian fandom and child abuse.

Hang on in there, all the records held by the Morpheus DJ have now had to be transfered to another venue since the Tora Bora bombing of the cave complex where they were previously held. I have got this right haven't I? Anyway this is what I was told by an employee of 'Music City' I met last night in a bar on Warren St.

Hey, KaZaa users didn't seem to mind (mostly because they didn't know until it was too late.)
I find it interesting that Morpheus only alloww transfers of mp3s with a bitrate of 128 or less. And in the FAQ, they pose the question "Why Don't you Allow Transfers of mp3s with a bitrate higher than 128?" But the FAQ skips the question. Goes right from question 2 to question 4. Hmmmmm.

What's spy ware? I use audiogalaxy. Does that have spy ware?

maryann, Monday, 4 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

What's spy ware?
Spyware is a "trojan horse" program hidden in a real program that watches what you do and every so often sends messages to the company that made the software. It might be innocent stuff like what kinds of things you download (so they can spam you for effeciently, or so they can pass your name onto Metallica/Doctor Dre and other branches of the Federal Gubmint.) But it might also be not-so innocent things like credit card numbers, passwords, whether or not your WinXP is a legit, activated copy or a serial cracked bootleg copy.
And because you never know the shadowy program running in the background is reporting back to its dark masters, spyware is not a good thing. Check out www.scumware.com for some of the nastier examples of spyware.
Also most spyware can be discovered and neutralized with software like "AdAware" or Moosofts "The Cleaner".
Hope this helps.

I use audiogalaxy. Does that have spy ware?
Yes, I think audiogalaxy gas some spyware, but not as bad as Limewire or KaZaa.

Limewire too!? Crap, I use Limewire on my computer at my office. That can't be good. Guess I should look into this "AdAware" - how does this guy work?

dyson, Wednesday, 6 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

There seems to be a lack of any of the spywear "cleaner" programs for the Mac.
