Empires and Dance is my fave of theirs, but yeh -- occasionally I have a sweet spot for SM in ooberpomp form.

It's the only Simple Minds record I (still) have. And it's on yummy gold vinyl.

Sean, Thursday, 21 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

"Sulk" was spring/summer, "New Gold Dream" summer/autumn, "A Kiss In The Dreamhouse" winter.

1982.

Marcello Carlin, Thursday, 21 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

I was a huge fan of Simple Minds from age 11 - 14. I've long since got rid of all of my SM stuff.

I still find I Travel and The American bearable.

I heard 'Someone, Somewhere, in summertime' playing recently when i popped into the offie to by fags - took me right back to the early 80s

which one is don't you forget about me on?

ethan, Thursday, 21 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

Originally that was on the Breakfast Club soundtrack. Also appears on their greatest hits comp Glittering Prize.

Sean Carruthers, Thursday, 21 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

Ned, which of these instrumentals supposedly sound like Radiohead?

Melissa W, Thursday, 21 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

On NGD? Most of them. ;-) "Somebody Up There Likes You" in particular sounds like the dry run for "Meeting in the Aisle."

Ned Raggett, Friday, 22 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

Very little sounds like NGD. Simple Minds at their peak, balancing a rich feel for melody with that bold epic sound just before it began to degenerate into empty bombast. That said I question whether the leap from NGD to Sparkle was as huge as most people seem to think ( i agree with dave q - never thought i'd write that- i don't find Sparkle in the Rain all that objectionable). Sure Peter Walsh's production is far subtler than Steve Lillywhite's but 'Summertime' and 'Miracle' wouldn't sound out of place there.

stevo, Friday, 22 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

utterly fantastic pristine production - used to listen to this and sylvian's 'brilliant trees' back to back.

Which one has got Herbie Hancock on it? That's the one...

Andrew L, Friday, 22 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

"Hunter and the Hunted"? wait, look - same initials!

Paul, Saturday, 23 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

Have to say that I love NGD and have a soft spot for SITR too, but have never really seen fit to go and investigate any further into their older back catalogue for some reason. Of course, it all went horribly wrong after the world took "Don't you forget about me" to its collective heart, but NGD is a special record and I think everyone seemed to recognise it at the time. It's all about the sound qualities involved, the timbres and the way the guitar isn't used as a rhythm device, but more for texture over the lush keyboards. Of course, they could never recapture it, but for one moment in the early 80s, Simple Minds really were it. Faves? "Hunted and the hunted" for Herbie Hancock's lovely electric piano solo (how DID he end up on it?) and "Somebody up there likes you", heard for the first time on the Gary Davies show on Radio 1 one late night in '83, and adored ever since. It doesn't NEED words, it's just fine as it is.

Awesome album. Have flogged it to death on many an occasion.

Trayce, Saturday, 9 June 2007 08:12 (sixteen years ago) link

I remember it playing in a car with friends driving for an hour to the next, bigger town. That is the shit.

Bimble, Saturday, 9 June 2007 08:14 (sixteen years ago) link

I was given it on vinyl by mum when I was about 16. Bless her. She did well.

Trayce, Saturday, 9 June 2007 08:27 (sixteen years ago) link

the colored vinyl version is beautiful, a transparent gold shot through with streaks of purple. that's kind of what it sounds like, too.

You lucky bastard!

Bimble, Saturday, 9 June 2007 16:16 (sixteen years ago) link

Wait-- produced by Peter Walsh, Scott Walker's producer from Climate Of Hunter on?

*checks discogs*

Hmm, he also did part of Penhouse and Pavement and all of Heyday!

Jon Lewis, Saturday, 9 June 2007 17:08 (sixteen years ago) link

I love this album.

Curt1s Stephens, Saturday, 9 June 2007 17:32 (sixteen years ago) link

i still have this, but mostly as an aesthetic object, love that gold vinyl (the music isn't bad, actually i downloaded a few tunes from this a while back)

gershy, Saturday, 9 June 2007 17:41 (sixteen years ago) link

the colored vinyl isn't hard to get! there's a bunch of them for sale on ebay for less than $10.

f. hazel, Saturday, 9 June 2007 20:38 (sixteen years ago) link

But is the sound quality worse as a result of all that?

Bimble, Saturday, 9 June 2007 21:09 (sixteen years ago) link

don't you already have it on CD?

The title-track is the sort of propulsive pop joyride that can and will haunt my imagination for days...

this is one of the most perfect albums ever; probably in my top 5.. i seem to appreciate it more and more as each year goes by. such immaculate production, not a single dud track, the lovely herbie hancock solo.. it's also perfect listening for stormy days indoors or sunny days cruising down the coat

Oh yeah, this song is probably the dopest thing on this record. I just played a bootleg live version of this other day. Now, what the hell was this about a Herbie Hancock solo????

kinda sad how kerr looks all slim and cute in the videos for this record but by the time you get to "alive & kicking" he looks like a bloated retard, like the falling off of the music was matched by his physical decline

If you like this, you can get alternate (and great) versions of some of the songs on the "Themes 2" compilation of 12"s, so for example the German 12" of New Gold Dream, which has the "bitter end" lyrics like the live in the city of shite version, as well as Soundtrack for every heaven, which was an outtake. There's a vocals version of that (called "In every heaven", I think) that's on a DVD version of the album.

Keith, Friday, 17 April 2009 22:54 (fourteen years ago) link

Oh yeah, and it's on Spotify.

Keith, Friday, 17 April 2009 22:57 (fourteen years ago) link

Surprised to see I've never posted on this thread, this album was my introduction to Simple Minds, I remember buying the purple-flecked gold vinyl of it after hearing "Promised You a Miracle" and "Someone Somewhere" on my local college radio. This and Sparkle in the Rain are the two essential albums of theirs for me.

Vinnie, Thursday, 15 September 2022 03:58 (one year ago) link

Just discovered the stereo remix they did for DVD-A in 2005, and it’s well worth tracking down. Kick drum is mixed down a bit, and Derek’s bass mixed up — it all ends up feeling warmer and fuller.

Sure, the gauzy coldness of the original was big part of the appeal, but I can’t help but love this even more.

(The multitracks for Catherine Wheel and Promised You a Miracle were missing, so no changes to those two. Oh, and there’s a bonus track too, In Every Heaven, sounding all kinds of wrong coming in after King Is White.)

Xgau Murder Spa (nikola), Thursday, 15 September 2022 13:02 (one year ago) link

Just gave this a spin. Like Vinnie, it's the only Simple Minds in my collection but very much deserves its place. Derek's bass is for sure the secret weapon on this album, anchoring all the cold synth tones and sometimes-histrionic vocals. A few good Mick Karn-lite moments thrown in there for good measure.

Guess I must be 40 next year. Wonder what my anniversary album is. Off to Google...

Happy 4-0 to New Gold Dream. I got my copy signed by Herbie Hancock recently. He spent quite some time examining the back cover but - no, he simply could not remember the session or playing the beautiful solo on Hunter and The Hunted.
