Jello Biafra (Post-Dead Kennedys) C/D S/D

Alternative Tentacles is one of my customers. Jesse's a cool guy, though I do still live for the day that Jello calls & places an order. That's how I came across the Melvins collaboration...I wouldn't have purchased it myself, had they not sent me a promo copy. All kind of off-topic but the day I got the account I did a little dance in my cubicle, and no-one else in my department knew what the hell I was babbling about.. "Jello what?"

I really loved Prairie Home Invasion, btw. Will The Fetus Be Aborted is a freakin CLASSIC. Jello should definitely do more country.

Favorite post DKs moment is 'Mate, Spawn and Die' by Lard, a mantra for the plunge into middle age if ever there was one. The Tumor Circus EP with the Clive Barker cover is a very nice item too.

Saw the spoken word thing he did in the immediate aftermath of 9/11, where he also gave his side of the 'reunion' story. Yes, he's an engaging public speaker, but . . get a fucking band together and tour, Jello!

It's not like there'd be any problem about assembling a good line-up. Do you want to see an incendiary punk rock rabble-rouser or an entertaining after dinner speaker?

I seem to remember a couple of blistering live Lard tracks tacked onto some Wax Tracks video comp a friend (Aldo?) had. Jello and the band performing behind chicken wire, which might just as well have been for the audience's protection as the other way around.

Sure, Jello is still doing the same thing he did back in the Dead Kennedys shows, as the stories go.. acting out the lyrics, making funny weird faces, jumping around, embracing the crowd, pretty frequent crowdsurfing, etc. But, I thought he wouldn't as "on", so to speak for the obvious reasons.. age, the getting-beat-up incident, etc.

Seems like Jello's been either working out, or has fully recovered or both.. aside from a slight gut and some grey hair, Jello was at 110% last night. He still has it, period. He sounds very much like he did back in the day. I was really floored. Perhaps this being an all ages show, this being Seattle maybe (i.e. WTO) and there being a lot of punk-rock parents on the balcony nodding their heads smiling watching their punk-rock kids in the mosh-pit below, it just gave Jello some sort of amazing second wind. I mean, the guy was one of the best frontmen I've seen at a rock performance this year. I can't even say the same for Jon King, and I LIKED that Gang Of Four show... a lot!

Again, sure, if you think Jello's performance style is "corny", this show would only confirm it. But it was good enough to easily get past that (for me)... and he only got on a brief preachy pulpit a couple of times, one time when the music was blaring, so you could barely hear him anyway. Even if you hate hate hate his spoken word stuff, this wouldn't be nearly enough to ruin the fun at all. (Personally, I don't mind his spoken word stuff that much as far as being informed goes.. it's just the delivery and "solutions" part of his spoken spiel that grate, but that's me.. but anyway..)

It helped that the Melvins warmed things up with their own mini-set, which was basically a live greatest-hits-EP-at-volume-11... It was stunning. It was the first time, after all these years, I got to see David Stone on bass (though I've seen Melvins at least a dozen times, and he's been playing with the band on and off since the late 90s) and David rocks it, especially with the noise-making gear widgets...

When Buzzo and David put on the terrorist masks, and started with Alice Cooper's "Halo Of Flies", the moment came, and Jello came onto the stage dressed as a silver lam&eeacute; South American junta leader, sunglasses and all.. and sang the full nine-minutes of it. Jello started stripping slowly throughout the set, dousing himself with a water bottle every song.

Anyway, even if you're suspect, DON'T MISS THIS SHOW! I expected a fun time, and I got a mega-fucking-wallop 'o' fun.

It also helps that given the (in my humble opinion) inexcusable actions of the Ex-Kennedys i.e. the lawsuit/rights to the DKs backcatalog, seeing this pretty much invalidates the Ex-Kennedys in a live context, period.

The Melvins were the ones that had to convince Jello to do live Dead
Kennedys songs live for this tour and the one last year... but I think
Jello realized this master move. Who's going to see the Ex-Kennedys live NOW, after this? Because any die-hard DKs fan too young to have seem them back in the day will have seen this one, if not both. No DKs fan would have seen just the Ex-Kennedys live.

And even if the Ex-Kennedys can sue Jello for using "their" songs live (which I don't know if is true or not), this Jello/Melvins tour thing will help put the nails into the coffins of the Ex-Kennedys being able to tour again... and the Ex-DKs will have to live off the sales of the DK records via Manifesto, solely (which is possible, but will suffer if their live shows are sparsely attended by even ironic fans at this point.)

All in all, payback can taste great, and rock very loudly.

my punk rock claim to fame: i was really involved in the campus green party in the 2000 elections, and we brought him to speak at my school. we took him out to dinner afterwards, and the only place open was denny's. he ate my fries. he also pissed in an empty water bottle before his lecture, so he didn't have to go out through the auditorium to the bathroom. bottle of jello biafra piss. yep.

And yes, Jello still rocks it live. He sat in with my band last month in Oakland wearing a pope's hat and a judge's robe. It was a good look for him.

Frankenchrist was a concept album?

This album kinda sucks unfortunately. The band sounds really stiff, the guitar sound is mostly rubbish slick distortion. There are some good songs on it, I think the production lets it down the most. Lyrics are a bit trite in places too, it's all angry and going for all the targets you'd expect but the wit isn't there in a lot of it.
