i'll give you pink (dude's got shtick but it's bratty richie rich shit), but, from where i was standing (next to the old video camera guy who used to have one huge dred but who's since cut off said one huge dred), excepter was spectacular. misfit toys, or autistics with telepathy, and it's the most exciting stuff happening in the city right now (no question). esp seeing them live you start to piece together their logic, how they interact with one another, etc.

xpost lemin

btw (funny this hasn't been mentioned yet-- maybe this isn't really special) r. stevie moore showed up and played as part of the haunted graffiti. he was wearing a bright orange outfit at the bottom of his pants he had an embroidered monopoly guy patch. ariel did "hanging with my heroes".

Nick Sylvester, Saturday, 16 April 2005 12:56 (nineteen years ago) link

haha the "DJ" was dan hougland from other music btw

Nick Sylvester, Saturday, 16 April 2005 12:57 (nineteen years ago) link

oops, when i said show was rad, i was ONLY referring to excepter. i left before ariel pink went on.

breezy mentioned in the GGD thread that he thinks excepter are crap. then he pays $10 to see them and post here how much they sucked?

cutty (mcutt), Saturday, 16 April 2005 13:22 (nineteen years ago) link

cutty get a grip. i dont' go to NYU. I've been out of college for years. you think obviously it's super cool to "dig" pretentious girls flopping around in sunglasses and fur coast moaning into a mic. I knew the DJ was the Other Music guy but who cares. I paid ten bucks to see if Ariel Pink would do something cool. instead he wasted my time with drunken yelling and pointlessness. It's annoying and insulting and I think the few people I heard say they liked it are just saying that for fear of dicks like cutty shutting them down. as for seeing excepter, I wanted to give them another shot. I saw them once before and was unimpressed, but not annoyed, this time they decided to go further and just act like idiots on stage. I saw seriously dozens of people leaving during both shows. Obviously Cutty was one of the hardcore fans up front casually nodding his head, really FEELING the moaning. you go cutty.

breezy, Saturday, 16 April 2005 13:32 (nineteen years ago) link

as for Ariel who makes ramshackle recordings on his tape recorder being bad live. He's been on tour for 3 months. Playing his set every night. You;d think he'd eventually FIGURE OUT a way to get slightly tighter and would WANT to sound good. Honestly it seemed like noone on stage cared, all night, including excepter. Ps. Tell the Other Music guy to turn around.

breezy, Saturday, 16 April 2005 13:35 (nineteen years ago) link

RIGHT, BECAUSE EVERYONE ELSE WAS "PRETENDING" TO ENJOY THE PERFORMANCE.

cutty (mcutt), Saturday, 16 April 2005 13:40 (nineteen years ago) link

lemin (lemin), Saturday, 16 April 2005 13:40 (nineteen years ago) link

SOME PEOPLE EVEN "PRETENDED" TO BUY EXCEPTER'S NEW CD.

(it was all a stage though, tendered in fake money)

cutty (mcutt), Saturday, 16 April 2005 13:42 (nineteen years ago) link

so clever cutty! so clever! any excuses for the ridiculous stage presence as well? or were you into that pretention too? ultimately it's run of the mill noise. don't worry cutty, even you will forget about it one day too.

really, i respect breezy's opinion but his hyperbole is growing a little tiresome.

on an earlier thread he describes gang gang dance as "the worst band ever," and in this thread, calls last night's show "worst of the year."

YO, WE GET IT. YOU DON'T LIKE THESE BANDS. STOP LISTENING TO THEM/PAYING TO SEE THEM AND YOU'LL GET OVER IT. STOP BEING SO AMAZED THAT OTHERS DERIVE PLEASURE FROM THEM.

cutty (mcutt), Saturday, 16 April 2005 15:52 (nineteen years ago) link

ok. GGD not worst band ever. Last night's show really was the worst I've seen this year. cutty's defensiveness---alarming. either you are in one of these bands, or are friends with them.

I paid to see Ariel Pink. he put on a really poor show. I think anyone can see that. Excepter was just an unfortunate encounter I will SURELY avoid at all costs in the future. so fear not cutty, you wont have to read anymore posts about at least my opposing view to yours.

warning to others: be careful not to disagree with cutty. he takes is VERY personally if you don't see eye to eye with him. god forbid you exagerrate for a moment on the holy grail ILM.

breezy/poortheatre should not venture away from their nyu dorms.

hahaha, oh man.

in retrospect, i actually did like the excepter set. they are the most motley crew i have ever seen on stage. they had it all: the slacker; the Sky Masterson; the Buchenwald inmate; the patchouli fiend; "Her Sneak" shelob, last spawn of the ungoliant. they'd be a bang-up act if they wouldn't take themselves so seriously. i didn't mind that the DJ didn't face us (besides, that guy's always really nice to me when i go into OM-- i didn't know he was in the group).

the ariel pink show was just plain bad. they sounded like shit! you could tell that they knew it, too. i kind of wanted to say, "Please don't play another song until you get your shit together. We like you but you sound terrible." he probably would have obliged, too. i don't think he was trying to hoodwink us. i felt bad, though, because i think his parents were standing right in front of me.. and you're right, breezy, there was a definite vibe of, "Am I not getting this or does this suck?" i left after "wait for kate."

from where i was standing (next to the old video camera guy who used to have one huge dred but who's since cut off said one huge dred)

you were standing right next to me! i thought about yelling out, "ILXOR!!!" just to see how many of you were there, but.. that dude that used to have the one huge dread-- doesn't he sometimes play with Jacob Fred Jazz Odyssey when they play in nyc?

that was R. Stevie Moore!? i don't really know his music, but isn't he, like, the original Ariel Pink? That would have been like Throbbing Gristle playing on stage with Excepter! I wanted to grab the mic every time that spider banshee came down and bumped into me and say, "What-a-day-what-a-day-what-a-day-Oh-Oh!"

Is the new Excepter CD good? I like KA.

And, for the record, I love Gang Gang Dance!

I saw Ariel Pink live earlier this year and he was terrible. We left after like three songs. To be fair, though, I was already smitten with his records and when I was on my way to the show, I wondered, "how could he possibly pull off his music in a live setting?

Then I got to the show and realized, "I see... the answer is, he clearly can't pull it off. like, at all." and so my friends and I left long before he brought in the local band to serve as backup. His music just doesn't lend itsel to a live venue.
