Don't Ever Antagonize The Horny (AaronHz), Friday, 11 March 2005 07:06 (nineteen years ago) link

Pink moon. The first one i heard - at an impressionable age.

mullygrubbr (bulbs), Friday, 11 March 2005 07:07 (nineteen years ago) link

Hmm... sometimes "bigger and coarser" is better, but I'm definitely going to side with Pink Moon here.

poortheatre (poortheatre), Friday, 11 March 2005 07:11 (nineteen years ago) link

I think "Things Behind the Sun" alone makes Pink Moon the clear winner.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Friday, 11 March 2005 07:13 (nineteen years ago) link

If you'd asked me at any time since 1997, even last week, I most likely would have said Bryter Later. But today I lack the wherewithal to choose. Please do not ask me at gunpoint to choose between these two albums. I'll know in about 5 years where I stand, but not yet.

First person who uses the fact that I said "5 years" as an opportunity to quote David Bowie's lyrics gets smacked with a big wet fish.

Bimble... (Bimble...), Friday, 11 March 2005 07:37 (nineteen years ago) link

Five Leaves Left for me. First I heard, still hits the hardest.

Bryter Layter is an imperfect record. Pink Moon is a perfect record. But my favorite of the three is Five Leaves Left.

Stormy Davis (diamond), Friday, 11 March 2005 07:56 (nineteen years ago) link

Definitely Pink Moon. I don't listen to Nick Drake much because he depresses me in a way that other "depressing" music (Leonard Cohen for example) doesn't. So I always feel like if I'm going to submit to that mood I might as well go for the bleakest most stripped down album.

walter kranz (walterkranz), Friday, 11 March 2005 08:17 (nineteen years ago) link

'Five Leaves Left' for me, if only for "Fruit Tree".
'Bryter Layter' sometimes sounds like the greatest thing, but I guess it's maybe be a bit more mood dependant. 'Pink Moon' has always been a bit too dry for me (although "Things behind the Sun" and "Roads" are probably my fave Drake tunes).

Baaderonixxx le Jeune (Fabfunk), Friday, 11 March 2005 08:53 (nineteen years ago) link

five leaves left. my first encounter with nick drake. it knocked me down in 1980. it still knocks me down now. bryter later is over-produced for my ears. still excellent but too opulent for a nick drake record. pink moon is the other extreme: very austere, probably the most "authentic" nick drake. it's one of the best records ever but five leaves left is a tick stronger. maybe the reason is that all the despair is already there but still very well wrapped up whereas pink moon makes me feel a little uncomfortable as drake really let's us poke into his depression. there is something embarrassing about this kind of strip of the soul.

pink moon, but northern sky makes the decision ever so hard.

lukey (Lukey G), Friday, 11 March 2005 09:28 (nineteen years ago) link

Bryter. Pink Moon only has 2 or 3 great songs, and I like Nick better with a band and arrangements. PM's highs ("Things Behind the Sun", "Parasite") are probably his best moments though.

Ferlin Husky (noodle vague), Friday, 11 March 2005 09:53 (nineteen years ago) link

They're all uber classic, but here are my rankings from best to slightly-less-than-best :

1.Five Leaves Left
2.Bryter Layter
3.Pink Moon

Bryter is the one whose individual songs I listen to the most. Five Leaves is the one which I listen to all the way through the most. Pink is the one which I listen to all the way through the most if I'm in a really fucked mood and I'm impatient.

And I think some of the best songs ended up on Time Of No Reply/Made To Love Magic

has everyone seen the cover of the new Boris album on southern lord?

scott seward (scott seward), Friday, 11 March 2005 12:25 (nineteen years ago) link

Pink Moon I would say - From the Morning is one of the best things ever, and the rest of the album is silly good. However, Bryter Later has got Northern Sky, which makes me weep and laugh simultaneously, so I don't bloody know. I've copied the lot onto an MP3 CD anyway, so it's something of a moot question for me.

Johnney B (Johnney B), Friday, 11 March 2005 12:49 (nineteen years ago) link

"Bryter Layter", clearly. I felt like his other album were a bit too toned down. On "Bryter Layter", he was still downbeat and mellow, however with a bit more variasjon in the arrangements than elsewhere. Also, the best songs are on "Bryter Layter"

Geir Hongro (GeirHong), Friday, 11 March 2005 12:55 (nineteen years ago) link

If and saying if I had to choose...I'd go with Bryter Layter as well. Northern Sky....best song. My wedding song. Sentimental fav.

I love Bryter Layter.

dog latin (dog latin), Friday, 11 March 2005 13:01 (nineteen years ago) link

Hazey Jane pt II is my favorite Nick Drake song; it alone makes Bryter Leyter the better album. Also it's never been tainted by car commercials.

j c (j c), Friday, 11 March 2005 13:06 (nineteen years ago) link

It has to be Pink Moon. The other two have some great songs, but there are some shockingly cloying arrangements which ruin many others. Case in point: 'Main In A Shed' which sounds incredible in demo form, but has it's mood completely killed on the LP.

Chewshabadoo (Chewshabadoo), Friday, 11 March 2005 13:07 (nineteen years ago) link

pink moon. agree with others about the arrangements & production.

AaronK (AaronK), Friday, 11 March 2005 13:33 (nineteen years ago) link

Pink Moon, but I only got Bryter Later a few weeks ago ($7.99 new on sale - such deal!) and I've been listening to it like crazy. You listen to Pink Moon all the time and you forget that Nick Drake had this whole other thing going with that lush sound. All three records are great, but I would agree that Pink Moon is a perfect album.

what this guy said goes for me too! i agree with all of it.and i also heard five leaves left first too. i bought that, went insane, went and bought bryter layter, went insane, said fuck it, went and bought the vinyl box set, went insane again. still insane.

If I had to choose the best one I would go with Pink Moon, but I actually listen to Bryter Later more often. When is anyone not in the mood for a little Hazey Jane?

Bryter Layter always souded to me like something I'd hear in a grocery store. Pink.

God I could go for some Hazey Jane right now!

Pink Moon.

can someone keep track of the score?

Ludo (Ludo), Friday, 11 March 2005 16:24 (nineteen years ago) link

"Imperfect," yes, if we're talking about Capital A Albums, I have no idea how to answer... but Bryter Later and Time of No Reply are the ones I listen to most. Hazey Jane II is my favorite, and Hazey Jane I is no slouch either. Chime of the City Clock! One of These Things First! The first half is perfect, I'd say. I like grocery stores. Sometimes tey play Earth Wind & Fire, too. Is there anything wrong with Earth Wind & Fire?

Sonny, Ah!!1 (Sonny A.), Friday, 11 March 2005 16:26 (nineteen years ago) link

Five Leaves Left, although it'd be more strongly entrenched in the #1 spot had they substituted the R. Thompson version of "Thoughts of Mary Jane."

Zack Richardson (teenagequiet), Friday, 11 March 2005 16:26 (nineteen years ago) link

Pink Moon > Five Leaves Left > Bryter Layter

which is not to say that I dislike any of them.

Pink Moon! As much as I love the songs on Bryter Later, several songs suffer from muzak arrangements.

Chewshabadoo (Chewshabadoo), Friday, 11 March 2005 19:36 (nineteen years ago) link

I don't normally do this kind of thing, but I honestly feel as though a preference for Bryter Later to Pink Moon is strongly correlated with how much I like someone (assuming they know/like Nick Drake at all).

A preference for Pink Moon makes me think of very difficult men who aren't much fun to be around, at least if they don't find it a difficult call.

I hate you.

Alba (Alba), Friday, 11 March 2005 20:06 (nineteen years ago) link

The demo of "Fly" kills the one on Bryter Layter, IMO.
I think the correct answer is the Fruit Tree boxset, really.

Trip Maker (Sean Witzman), Friday, 11 March 2005 20:08 (nineteen years ago) link

you forgot the smiley, alba. ;-)

alex in mainhattan (alex63), Friday, 11 March 2005 20:09 (nineteen years ago) link

The Correct Answer is all three plus the comps Time Of No Reply, Made To Love Magic, and select bits off that three-disc bootleg which isn't all too relevatory but has great bits.

donut debonair (donut), Friday, 11 March 2005 20:24 (nineteen years ago) link

Bryter Layter is still a great album, obv.--"Fly" and "Northern Sky" evoke such wonderful, beautiful images of pastoral/celestial bliss. But it's bogged down by "Poor Boy" (like "Fruit Tree" it's too cloyingly self-referential, plus SINGERS OTHER THAN NICK OMG YOU SUCK) and the arrangements on certain tracks which veer too close to lite-rock for my tastes.

Pink Moon, on the other hand, is fantastic. IMHO I think it's the "fullest"-sounding of his albums, because even though the instrumentation is "sparse" Nick is able to fill in all corners with just fingerpicking and his voice; every creaking of his fingernail against a guitar string carries the resonance of a thousand Bryter Layters. And despite the constant criticism over the mythologizing of Nick, there really is a transcendent emotional quality to the album that gets to me. It's not depressing; the whole album feels like a cool summer morning at 4 AM, with dawn just faintly lurching over the horizon. It's a feeling of solitude, brushing against sadness occasionally, but certainly not despair.

Alba, I'm not much fun to be around, but I think that's for reasons other than the fact that I'm a pretentious Pink Moon whore ;)

Curt1s St3ph3ns, Friday, 11 March 2005 20:33 (nineteen years ago) link

I've had this argument before, but hating on "Poor Boy" = hating on Fun.

Ferlin Husky (noodle vague), Friday, 11 March 2005 21:37 (nineteen years ago) link

I...actually like "Bryter Layter" better, I guess, because I dig the strings. And I get shivers from "Chime of a City Clock" and "Hazy Jane 2." But "Pink Moon" works better as an album, it is more unified. The sound on "BL" is a bit more "dated," I suppose. I love 'em both, a very tough call. I'm a sucker for strings! I always end up playing, in those midnight-of-the-soul moments, "BL" and the third Big Star album back-to-back, that usually gets me out of the mood and I go back to normal...

edd s hurt (ddduncan), Friday, 11 March 2005 21:48 (nineteen years ago) link

poor boy = kitsch. all those girls in the background choir should have been shot before the recording. if that is fun, i can live without it.

alex in mainhattan (alex63), Friday, 11 March 2005 21:54 (nineteen years ago) link

Five Leaves Left for me. Then Pink Moon. Love them all, though.

Plus, and this is a snark-free question, can someone explain the love for "Hazey Jane II"? A lot of you have singled it out for ILM worship, but I don't get it. Please tell me what I'm missing.

David A. (Davant), Friday, 11 March 2005 22:15 (nineteen years ago) link

hazey jane ii >> hazey jane i. it's my favourite non-instrumental on bryter later. this country vibe is great. it's so lush, so mellow, so life-encompassing, so universal.

what a brilliant end lyric-wise:
if songs were lines in a conversation the situation would be fine.

alex in mainhattan (alex63), Friday, 11 March 2005 22:25 (nineteen years ago) link

The first Nick Drake song I heard was 'Northern Sky' in late summer 1994, on the Mark Radcliffe show. It's one of perhaps two of three other similarly stop-me-dead-in-my-tracks musical experiences I've ever had. "So that's the guy my sister's boyfriend loves".

Alba (Alba), Saturday, 12 March 2005 17:01 (nineteen years ago) link

Bryter Later wins in my book for the shimmery arrangements and Chime Of A City Clock and the peerless Northern Sky . A perfect stoned Sunday afternoon record. Pink Moon , while remarkable, has the weight of being a "final document" of sorts and it almost always seemed to come from a completely different human being than the previous two records.

Pink Moon. I thought he improved with every album, and what I like about Pink Moon is the way everything has been stripped back to just guitar and voice for the most part. His guitar playing is so good on that record.

crüt, Wednesday, 20 September 2017 19:10 (six years ago) link

One of the things Joe Boyd remarks upon in his book White Bicycles is seeing ND play live for the first time and noticing how strong his left hand was and how precise and articulate his picking. Even outside of a recording studio, his playing sounded that clean.

Yeah, and it's great to hear it without any orchestral parts etc. Not that there's anything wrong with the orchestral parts on the first couple of albums, god no, it's more that it always feels like the orchestral parts and the guitar parts are fighting for my attention.

I've always been Bryter Layter (even with the two dodgy later instrumentals), but just lately Pink Moon is edging ahead. Place to Be. My word.

I was up near Birmingham recently and went to Tanworth. He's in a modest plot with his folks and with a view of a spread of fields stretching to the horizon. I traced with my fingers the inscription on the back of the headstone and had myself a little cry. The wind was in the trees. All good.

When I listened to "Road" the first time - which was around 1980 - I slowly took in the words and immediately identified with them. It was like an obsession I had to grip the lyrics instantly, I couldn't let them slip by. I had to memorise them on the spot. Until today "Road" is the only song I know the lyrics of by heart.
