Am I the only person who confused "Who Let the Dogs Out" with DMX at first?

God, I don't remember when I first heard that song. I've heard it about a billion times. I liked it at first (I was very dumb) but then it's like, fucking a, enough already.

Why I liked that song, I don't know..

I heard both the Baja Men and DMX's first hit(s) by accident, just switching the radio dial around. They both sounded kinda fun, having barking dogs and all, but I don't think I played the songs all the way through, and for a couple weeks I figured they were the same artist. No matter what some idiots assume, I doubt this has anything to do with my age. And since Baja Men were using Carribean riddims under random shouts, my crunk connection is not a joke, though I'm sure "Whoomp! There It Is" or something might be a missing link.

does Miami Bass have anything to do with crunk?...like those shouting fraternity chant songs that 2 Live Crew used to do like "Fuck Martinez"?

M@tt He1geson (Matt Helgeson), Wednesday, 8 September 2004 21:46 (nineteen years ago) link

They seem the same to me, which is why I don't get why everyone got excited about crunk. but hey.

Magic City (ano ano), Wednesday, 8 September 2004 21:49 (nineteen years ago) link

i dunno....crunk has a pretty different beat and musical feel...more dark and european techno squawks...more midtempo than uptempo, but i guess 2 Live, Disco Rick and the Dogs, et al must have been an influence on lots of southern rappers back in the day? RIght? (a more enlightened person should step in at this point....)

M@tt He1geson (Matt Helgeson), Wednesday, 8 September 2004 21:55 (nineteen years ago) link

Miami Bass almost single-handedly kept both "Planet Rock" electro rhythms and "Louie Louie" frat yells alive, later to be crunked. This is VERY important, and don't let anybody try to tell you otherwise.

Yeah, according to what I've read. I think Lil Jon namechecks 2 Live Crew and Mantronix and stuff. But I am not enlightened!

Of course it does!!!!

haha I was gonna make somekind of joke about "Louie, Louie" and Gary Glitter, but I didn't want to feed the flames of Chuck hate. x-post.

The first time I ever heard of Lil Jon was in the "Bass" issue of *Grand Royal,* I think. He was a DJ in Atlanta or something in those days, if I remember right.

chuck, Wednesday, 8 September 2004 22:02 (nineteen years ago) link

Yeah and he worked for So So Def as an A&R.

artdamages (artdamages), Wednesday, 8 September 2004 22:05 (nineteen years ago) link

you can even buy bass crunk: http://www.neurodisc.com/showItem.php?id=119

pitbull is only the most recent link between the two. since he has worked with luke and lil' jon.

scott seward (scott seward), Wednesday, 8 September 2004 22:06 (nineteen years ago) link

and yeah, check out an old so so def all-stars comp. the crunk is all over that shit.

scott seward (scott seward), Wednesday, 8 September 2004 22:08 (nineteen years ago) link

Lil' Jon's first industry job was at So So Def!

When I first heard DMX's "Party Up (Up In Here)" a few years after it came out I assumed it was Bonecrusher, who I had yet to hear.

For fucks sake. Way to conveniently forget NOLA bounce, Memphis bass music, DJ Jubilee, early Suave House, Ride Out music etcetc. Lil Jon was making "crunk" music since 1994, it's not some sudden new variation on the "Louie Louie Template". And quit with the cringey rock music comparisons, please.
