I vote for youth of america. favorite track being the not-weak closer "When it's Over"

I was at that show too (as was the family Kitty, if my eyes didn't deceive me)! They did a great job.

Sadly, I haven't heard Over The Edge in its entirety (just the title track, "Doom Town," "Romeo," "Messenger" and whatever other tracks from it are on Wipers Live). I'm guessing I'd be going with Youth Of America (which I do have) though, because I actually cannot stand "Romeo." It sounds like something that Bruce McCullough's frustrated adolescent character on Kids In The Hall would have written (right down to the shots of him running).

Fire Fire Fire
Fire on my brain...

hahaha exactly! I really wish Sage's lyrical skills matched his riffmaking ones. "Soul's Tongue" off of Straight Ahead combines one of my favorite chord progressions ever with lyrics like "If the STREETS COULD ONLY TALK!"

God bless Hot Snakes.

"Taking Too Long" is another really good song off of YOA.

I'd probably go with 'Is This Real' as my favorite album. I never had 'Over the Edge' until I got the box set as I never could find it.

The first Wipers cd I had was the old Restless 'best of', which is real good, especially considering there is nothing from Is this Real and "Youth of America" is not included. I've had that one, YOA and the old Subpop version of 'Is this Real' forever. The later records like 'The Circle', 'Follow Blind' and 'Silver Sail' are all spotty.

I really like The Circle. And Land Of The Lost. Follow Blind is really not as good as those two. I don't think I've ever heard Silver Sail. Of the first three, gee, i dunno, I do love YOA. Hmmm, they are all pretty wonderful. I'll take a pass.

twelve years pass...

12 years has passed. somehow, no one has mentioned "So Young", which is...possibly...the greatest song of all time! ok probably not but i am digging it a lot lately

I'd like to make a movie to just have some longing road scene set to "Blue Cowboy". That's always been one of my favorites by Greg Sage/Wipers. They had a cool sound with all that echo and use of space. There is a Lexington punk band called The Elsinores that name dropped them on one of their flyers and they do have 'that sound', so someone is still finding their records which is cool.

Does anybody remember the movie Over The Edge? The Citizen Kane of stoned and dangerous 70s teen movies.

the men's faster songs on leave home are really indebted to the first trio of songs from Over the Edge

speaking of cool old videos that have the words "over the edge" in them, does anyone know of cool old wipers footage on the internet? it reminds me of my quest for old pylon footage in that there's one tantalizing clip that i can find, from a doc on portland music, and it's just an excerpt of a really good live performance of "over the edge". i want more! more cool old wipers footage! i don't ask for much

Karl Malone, Thursday, 13 April 2017 23:10 (seven years ago) link

...so what you're telling me is that cold old wipers footage doesn't exist

Karl Malone, Saturday, 15 April 2017 01:39 (seven years ago) link

yea i remember searching madly for any video from prime era wipers and couldn't find a skerrick there must be something put there its not like they were playing live pre film

it's even more frustrating because just like the rare old school pylon footage, the only glimpse i can find it so tantalizing.
