"WHAT DO YOU GUYS THINK OF THE BAND VINCEBUS ERUPTUM ON LOAD RECORDS????????????? "

I've said it many times, but hey let's say it again - bands named after the songs/albums/lyrics of other bands invariably suck. Yes, that means Radiohead AND Ladytron AND Death Cab for Cutie AND anyone else you can think of...

Shakey Mo Collier, Friday, 16 April 2004 20:09 (twenty years ago) link

Have you heard them?

Lil' Fancy Kpants (The K is Silent) (ex machina), Friday, 16 April 2004 20:12 (twenty years ago) link

of course not. If they couldn't be bothered to think creatively about their name, why should I expect them to be creative musically?

Let me guess - they're loud and "crazy".

which brings us to providence's vincebus eruptum. heavy metal, for ve, is not about transcendence, but conscious musical/lyrical retardation Ð the sound of a triumphant rockhood perverted into a sludgy, greasy, dumb act of debasement that eats where it shits and shits where it eats. the fact sheet says they sound like mayhem. lies: they sound like glue-sniffing fourteen-year old mayhem fans, thrashing out half-remembered/never-learnt riffs in a garage that smells of stale beer and fresh vomit. but their self-titled debut works as a kind of gummo for the ears, a relentlessly scatological (some titles, at random: 'who farted', 'drug orgy', 'the shit') and sonically basic document that sounds totally fucking invincible chiefly because it has lowered itself to such an excellent nadir that no insults you fling at it can possibly hold any meaning. where most metal riffs on themes of power and dominance, 'the novice' ("you're just a one-pump chump/ you stick it in and you come") tackles shame, weakness, and inadequacy, albeit through the filter of some hapless redneck cipher. it's pure melvins guitar-bass-drums grind looped into endless, tight repetitions, a music with a three-second memory span. and the key to appreciating it is to just embrace the retard and let it dribble gummily down the back of your neck.

Plus Vocokesh had already named themselves after Abe "Voco" Kesh! Only one Blue Cheer referencing band allowed! (I spelled his name wrong in my first post. Sorry, Abe!)

Broheems (diamond), Friday, 16 April 2004 20:18 (twenty years ago) link

wow - do VE also sound like having my testicles stuck in a blender and served back to me as garnish?

*snore*

Shakey Mo Collier, Friday, 16 April 2004 20:20 (twenty years ago) link

The best thing ever is that one of VE's bassist's other bands is named LANDED. AHAHAH LOL OMG

Lil' Fancy Kpants (The K is Silent) (ex machina), Friday, 16 April 2004 20:23 (twenty years ago) link

yeah? maybe he can tell me what "vincebus" means...

Shakey Mo Collier, Friday, 16 April 2004 20:24 (twenty years ago) link

no

morris pavilion (samjeff), Friday, 16 April 2004 21:58 (twenty years ago) link

eh, that's like the Rolling Stones thing - using a term in the popular vernacular that also happens to be a specific musical reference. Not the same. The name works outside of its musical reference point.

Shakey Mo Collier, Friday, 16 April 2004 22:12 (twenty years ago) link

pretty sure it means "cock rock"

you got a problem with cock or something?

the band vincebus eruptum is pretty good, actually. i didn't want to like it, but it takes metal and puts a kind of glazed, paint-huffing spin on it. ain't as good as necronomitron, but it is damn good.

el sabor de gene (yournullfame), Friday, 16 April 2004 22:36 (twenty years ago) link

But are Necronomitron as good as Necronomicon?? That is the pressing question....

Broheems (diamond), Friday, 16 April 2004 22:38 (twenty years ago) link

I think they wanted "vincibus" and got confused

J0hn Darn1elle (J0hn Darn1elle), Friday, 16 April 2004 22:39 (twenty years ago) link

which necronomicon? the german one or one of the 600 metal bands?

el sabor de gene (yournullfame), Friday, 16 April 2004 22:45 (twenty years ago) link

well okay, what does "vincibus" mean then...? The closest thing the latin grammar site I've been using doesn't have "vincibus" in it. The closest thing is "vincilibus" which means "easily" (easily erupted? buh?)

Shakey Mo Collier, Friday, 16 April 2004 22:47 (twenty years ago) link

VE, for me, was pretty much a terrible letdown after Landed and Olneyville Sound Systen's last album on Hospital. VE is not the good kind of retarded.

jack cole (jackcole), Friday, 16 April 2004 23:06 (twenty years ago) link

No one got my "testicles in a blender" joke. I am sad.

Shakey Mo Collier, Friday, 16 April 2004 23:12 (twenty years ago) link

Um..... this album is great.

But not as great as Outsideinside, which is amazing.

As is the Randy Holden songs on New! Improved!...

wha?!

el sabor de gene (yournullfame), Saturday, 17 April 2004 07:41 (twenty years ago) link

he's talkin the 2nd Blue Cheer album, yo.
git wit it.

eedd, Saturday, 17 April 2004 11:46 (twenty years ago) link

yeah, thanks for the tip.

(i was trying to say, "what the hell are you talking about? outsideinside barely comes up to vincebus eruptum's KNEE, man.")

el sabor de gene (yournullfame), Saturday, 17 April 2004 12:15 (twenty years ago) link

and outsideinside is a GREAT album, don't get me wrong - but there are a couple of crap songs on there and it doesn't have that airplane-glue-satori quality during the rockouts.

but i go for dumber/loudest every time.

el sabor de gene (yournullfame), Saturday, 17 April 2004 12:17 (twenty years ago) link

Shakey, does that include the Bad Brains...?

I got old Vincebus Eruptum for a buck not too long ago...

John 2, Saturday, 17 April 2004 12:37 (twenty years ago) link

I'll explain my OutsideInside love later.. but must go catch a bus...

donut bitch (donut), Saturday, 17 April 2004 14:12 (twenty years ago) link

Outsideinside is just a sexier record than Vincibus Eruptum.

That first record is a blueprint and cornerstone of rock music, obviously. But it is pretty much just "imSTRUNGOUTimSTRUNGOUTimSTRUNGOUTimSTRUNGOUTimSTRUNGOUTimSTRUNGOUTimSTRUNGOUTimSTRUNGOUTimSTRUNGOUTimSTRUNGOUTimSTRUNGOUT" non-stop. Outsideinside is the album that still shows the skills and noise but has things that I actually want to go back and listen to, far more often. "Just A Little Bit" is their best song, especially for the sudden surprise white noise ending. If only that lineup had continued, I'd have been very curious. ah well.

six years pass...

I too picked up Vincebus Eruptum on vinyl this weekend after having it on my to-buy list for about 10 years. Concur with Shakey's verdict above: it is great. What about the rest of Blue Cheer's catalogue? "OutsideInside" has received praise here on ILM, so I'll try to grab that one. Allmusic has it that "New! Improved! Blue Cheer", "Blue Cheer" and even "Oh! Pleasant Hope" are good albums. Any thoughts?

Duke, Sunday, 11 July 2010 20:22 (thirteen years ago) link

"outsideinside" freaks me out. monstrous album.

hobbes, Sunday, 11 July 2010 20:38 (thirteen years ago) link

will definitely get it. Sundazed does a nice-looking re-issue..

Duke, Sunday, 11 July 2010 21:19 (thirteen years ago) link

Uh buy "Outsideinside" and then download "New! Improved!" for the Randy Holden tracks. And you can pretty much forget the rest.

Pants Perdu (GOTT PUNCH II HAWKWINDZ), Monday, 12 July 2010 08:18 (thirteen years ago) link

nine years pass...

I find going from Tad's Salt Lick to this back-to-back really helps explain both albums.

pomenitul, Friday, 5 June 2020 02:52 (three years ago) link

two weeks pass...

This Randy Holden record is getting a rerelease and I am tempted, any fans here?

An incredible album. I'd had a burned CD-R copy for years, so I was thrilled when I saw Riding Easy finally got it reissued in the States with Holden's full participation. It's been bootlegged so often over the years. I've only got the CD copy, but it sounds so good. Such a killer record.

soaring skrrrtpeggios (jon /via/ chi 2.0), Wednesday, 24 June 2020 15:15 (three years ago) link

Well that's me sold, thanks! Apparently the copies Norman are selling are signed by the man himself.

Neil S, Wednesday, 24 June 2020 15:22 (three years ago) link

Yeah I know Riding Easy did the same thing with signed LP copies. Enjoy, it's really great. Really makes you wish he hadn't taken that 20+ year hiatus from music after this one.

Population II def classic, I should probably get a copy myself

chipstick rebellion (Colonel Poo), Wednesday, 24 June 2020 16:13 (three years ago) link

one month passes...

this finally arrived the other day, and it's great, thanks for the recommendation. The guitar tone is so good, even thicker than Blue Cheer, like early Sabbath, and the doomier tempos really suit that heavy sound
