I can't wait for the 2030 travelling retrospective exhibition of No Limit cover art - photoshopped bling and candy-colored cadillacs.

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Thursday, 8 January 2004 18:02 (twenty years ago) link

i wasn't listening to much hip hop at the time, so my memories of the no limit explosion are pretty much limited to the (pretty goofy) turn the "no limit soldiers" did on wcw monday nitro.

andrew s, Thursday, 8 January 2004 18:06 (twenty years ago) link

I kinda forgot they weren't actually called "No Talent Soldiers." It's been a long time since I've heard anyone refer them as anything else.

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Thursday, 8 January 2004 18:07 (twenty years ago) link

I like TRU, which is P, Silkk and C-Murder (who recently got railroaded into a lengthy jail term by evil Jefferson Parish prosecutors and jurists). Also Mia X, 504 Boyz--really search most mid-to-late 90s No Limit before P fell off with Gameface--though that record had the excellent "Ooh-Wee."

adam (adam), Thursday, 8 January 2004 18:16 (twenty years ago) link

Mystical aside (and he's only questionably No Limit at best, cuz he had albums before and after on other labels)....No Limit just seems kinda quaint after Cash Money - they did everything No Limit did but bigger, faster, stronger, better....

M@tt He1geson (Matt Helgeson), Thursday, 8 January 2004 23:37 (twenty years ago) link

Hoo boy I fucking HATE No Limit and every one of its shitty fucking assembly-line rappers. Gimme Snoop or Em over them ANY day of the week. At least they have some fucking charisma!!

snoop was on no limit, wasn't he?

cloverlandthug, Friday, 9 January 2004 00:36 (twenty years ago) link

As alluded to above, Master P's idiocy (and Eric Bischoff's allowal to let him run his idiocy on his shows) was one of the reasons WCW folded. Fuck 'em.

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Friday, 9 January 2004 00:38 (twenty years ago) link

WHAT ABOUT THE WEST TEXAS REDNECK ALLSTARS??

surely a great byproduct of all the no limit wackness. curt hennig was never more inspired.

bill stevens (bscrubbins), Friday, 9 January 2004 00:40 (twenty years ago) link

i bought the 504 boyz cd at the mall this afternoon. but i only listened to 'tight whips' and a skit and watched the dvd that came with it.

rate his gucci ferrari out of ten.

cloverlandthug, Friday, 9 January 2004 00:46 (twenty years ago) link

West Texas Rednecks were a perfect example of how, despite all his skills in pulling in PPV buyrates, Bischoff had no clue whatsofuckingever about his actual core audience. What you do in wrestling is make sure you still have your core audience, so when you experience a downturn in fortunes, you've still got someone to fall back on. You don't, therefore, in traditionally one of the more rouge of neck areas in the States, position the country singers as the heels, and the rappers as the faces. Idiocy.

However, yeah, it was Curt's last great run. God rest the old bugger.

The TRU album was pretty good - 'Hooty Hoo' was pretty damn great, and C-Murder was somewhat better than any rapper Cash Money has put out excepting Wayne and Juve (Don't know much about BG, haven't heard too much good from him). Silkk was tight too for being the young one of the group. They were ridiculous - low budget as hell, not too skilled - but they put out some good Louisiana music for a bit. Master P should have never made what Diddy did, but there have been worse movements in rap. Hell, the Big Tymers were awful ripoffs (cheaper Casio beats, worse covers, worse rappers) before "Still Fly" came out and Fresh started producing better things for better rappers.

I feel like such a dumbass that I didn't really "get" No Limit in high school.

I sold pretty much every one of the 80 CDs they released in 1997-1998 at the record store I worked at, never thinking twice about any of it; and now I'm trying to buy them on eBay for $40 a pop, FML

I used to go apeshit to 2 Unlimited when I was about 9. I had "The Workaholic" on 7". Amazing this band managed to release at least two hit albums where every song was exactly the same.

listening to Mac's "World War III" right now. really solid, but I have a theory that No Limit drinking games would be easy (take a shot everytime someone says "I'm a soldier").

Bo Jackson Overdrive, Saturday, 10 March 2012 18:35 (twelve years ago) link

WWIII is p great btw. it actually is more distinctive than most NL releases (which I generally like but some of them tend to blur together).
