one year passes...
scored his 'Afternoon of a Georgia Fawn' LP gave it a listen this morning. I suspect its very much unlike any ECM but it has that autunmal beginning...sorta fitting in with the label's aesthetic and it was raining outside so its all good.

I like to hear more abt his 'tone poem' concept, if there's anymore to it.

really enjoyed the 'composition' on the second side. decicated to his son. so sweet!!

i did like georgia fawn, a lot! however i forget why. will listen again today cos it is indeed that sort of morning

i see marcello called it the missing link twixt bitches brew and braxton but i'm finding that a little hard to fathom

saw that when i searched for the thread - in the miles davis prog from a year back i recall one of his side men saying that his way of arranging things was all to do with the act of choosing who was going to play in which session resulting in his next record...marion brown basically said, at the back of this LP, that he chose the people, and i think he talks through the concept but in the end everyone plays. Braxton kind of does a similar thing in his 'for trio' on arista i think - gotta re-read the sleevenotes on that LP to check...

anyway, yes, sound-wise 'afternoon...' and bb are completely diff.

(btw hold tight - been to the marclay thing?)

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Tuesday, 22 March 2005 12:31 (nineteen years ago) link

also I can't remember what 'for trio' sounds like but my impression was: "in this room there are a bunch instruments, lets go round the room, play whatever we pick up, put it down, pick something else up etc hey presto we've got enough for a record".

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Tuesday, 22 March 2005 12:41 (nineteen years ago) link

hm i guess it's interesting cos it underlines that (if i've got the right end of the stick) choosing who u want to be playing on your session in the first place is still the first inescapable line in composition however freeform you'd like to be after the fact. and indeed vaguer still one is composing with one's relationships to the other people involved ie assumptions, patronisings, underratings, guesstimates of ppl's potential, trust. well that's all quite obv really. (prob why the amm soap opera is still cool)

i think i'm confident in remembering georgia fawn to have a especially soft and engaging familial atmos, to that end. with a stellar lineup, so thats the listeners own expectations coming into it too. but yeah perhaps foisted by that dedicated to my son side. cant find it right now tho grr

(not yet no, am super broke, holed up at home digging for reggaeton)

"can someone gmail me jazz composers orchestra 3lp okthanxbye"

hold tight the private caller (mwah), Tuesday, 22 March 2005 13:11 (nineteen years ago) link

gmail me too oh wait i must get an account first!

yeah and it def is a v similar deal in classical composition where many of my very faves are the pieces where the composer writes with a performer/ensemble's and their idiosyncracies in mind. or someone like feldman, who wrote some of his best stuff as attempts at portraits of his artist friends.

(let me know if you'd like (or are able to) to go to the marclay sometime - i did a thread on this but have not gone)

four years pass...

Found a used copy of the Get Back reissue of the Marion Brown Quartet LP on ESP yesterday. Really, really liking it. As dlp9001 says above regarding Why Not, it "balances free with tune nicely." Just enough of both to keep me really interested. Plus, I love getting lost in sidelong pieces that justify their length. I've meant to check him out for a while and I'm definitely interested in finding more now. Plus, it has a great cover:

The only one I've ever heard is Three for Shepp, which is really really good.

Definitely want to check that one out as I'm a big Shepp fan as well.

im not sure what to do about porto novo and reeds/vibes and some of the other non-impulse! non-esp shit. any opinions?

So sad. One of my fave musicians. His playing on Harold Budd's "Pavilion Of Dreams" is lovely.

listening to amina claudine myers's POEMS FOR PIANO, a solo piano tribute record to marion from 1979. nice impressionistic versions of MB songs, got me wondering about a few records i havent heard yet:

Still, it should be celebrated every year.
