"Hurdy Gurdy Man" is a fun creepy song.

James Blount (James Blount), Thursday, 28 November 2002 08:16 (twenty-one years ago) link

He may have been a shamless dilletante chancer, but any of the many "Best Of"s will have about a dozen wonderful pop gems.
Destroy - all the wandering minstrel hey nonny nonny rubbish
Search - the great pop songs - Season of the Witch, Sunshine Superman, There is a Mountain, Hurdy Gurdy Man etc

There's a gd Donovan track on the current free Mojo drugs CD. I don't listen to him that often, but I always think he's prob. quite underrated (at least by me) whenever I do hear one of his good'uns. I dunno, I suppose it's quite diff to take him seriously after seeing 'Don't Look Back' (esp. the scene where Dylan performs a savage, impromptu versh of 'Baby Blue' in response to some half-baked folkie cobblers from Dono.) I expect Donovan is a nicer person than Dylan.

The use of 'Season of the Witch' over the closing credits of 'To Die For' almost makes that movie worth watching.

Trivia: Donovan colaborated with German Popstarsesque girl group No Angels on a remake of "Atlantis".

Classic!! I got my good friend, who's a real fan of 60's folk and psychedelia conveniently enouhj, into Donovan a while ago and he has a lot of the earlier records, which I do enjoy, albeit in the manner of beautiful aural-wallpaper. Then again, the only whole record I have by him is "Mellow Yellow" and it is almost flawless -- only one or two songs that don't do much. "Writer in the Sun", "Sand and Foam", and "Young Girl Blues" should definitely be sought after.

The only good thing about Rules of Attraction was the use of "Colours".

Finally someone else admits to seeing Rules of Attraction.

James Blount (James Blount), Saturday, 30 November 2002 05:54 (twenty-one years ago) link

So no-one else rates Get Thy Bearings? I think it's his best track.

chris sallis, Saturday, 30 November 2002 16:50 (twenty-one years ago) link

two years pass...
emi reissues on their way - full albums :

hurdy gurdy man, mellow yeallow, sunshine superman, barabajagal.

all with tons of extra tracks.

the ones which aint all airy hippy nonsense are somewhat fab ..

there are some serious grooves hidden throughout,
esp the barabajagal track .. whoa.

season of the witch is indeed ace and creepy.

and i'm sure the opening few bars of Get Thy bearings sax line has been sampled ?

if not then why not ..

Can we talk about Donovan some more please?

Open Road is a real classic - and surprisingly diverse - album.

Hurdy Gurdy Man is nice too, as an album.

that's the classic/search

destroy/dud: his autobiography. admittedly I only skimmed it at a bookstore but it seemed like a weird mix of hippie/showbiz jive.

I don' wan nun of that jive man! Slap me some skin, bro!

The liner notes of the Donovan's Greatest Hits reissue certainly make me not want to read anything else he has written.

Looks like the Maharishi really set a fire under Donny's butt!

I saw him stoically limp from one venue to the next, day and night, and do his little stoic one-man-one-guitar-act at the 1998 Pori Jazz fest -- to the largely indifferent -- and (should I say) "spare" -- audiences, as I recall.
I also recall staying in front of the stage on at least on a couple of ocaasions to listen to him. (Had never heard him live in my life, up to that point, nor had heard that many of his records - only the one that has the words "gift", "flower", "garden" and "from" in its title, I guess).
Must say that he did sing'n'play on autopilot, sort of. Still, for the first few times it was fairly fascinating to hear those pretty well-known titles from the man's own mouth. Even if the wind blew some of it away over the open, and rather desolate, field. Or the words got all quite blurry in those hangars with terrible-some acoustics...
And then, not too long after that, I saw on VH1 that little co-operation with ...which girl group was it again? That must've been a first major thing for him, in commercial terms, after ...the Butthole Surfers cover or what?

Is anything worth tracking down after Open Road & Cosmic Wheels?

Brio, Friday, 25 June 2010 16:18 (thirteen years ago) link

I liked Sutras a lot.

Just came across this. Don’t know what I think about it.

It's not that different from Cat Stevens guesting with Boyzone.
