yeah... classic or dud might be a little premature... but "Tridecoder" is definitely searchable... what happened to kitty-yo, i feel as though it fell off my map?

where am i?

Classic. I've written about them on my site, just a little bit... But Valerie has a lovely voice. I wrote that it reminded me of announcements in a foreign airport or train station (a compliment). The music is just propulsive enough to be lively, but muted enough to be beautiful.

yeah, that's also an interesting connection because a herrman & kleine track off of the blue skied & clear compilation actually does use a train station announcement voice. it certainly lends a nice evocative effect (although perhaps it loses a bit of power when put so explicitly, the track being called "Leaving you Behind").

Classic - the opening lines of Scary World Theory (the song) send shivers down my spine. As does their cover of Together In Electric Dreams.

"Tridecoder" and "Scary World Theory" are beautiful! I love the atmosphere they create, iontimate but not mawkish. Valerie's sings like she is just after the nervous breakdown, but with the "what doesn't kill me, makes me stronger" expression. The arrangments reminds me a bit of Lippok's brothers (To Rococo Rot)work on "Sound Of The Water", but Lali Puna leave more empty space in their songs, which makes them sound more ambiguous (?). In a strange way they also sound exotic for me...maybe because it's hard to point out an obvious inspirations in their case. I don't like Notwist and Mr.John Soda though, they sound too much like college rock for my ears.

Czesc Bob. Dziekuje. Every kind word gives me more confidence, but I still need about 20 minutes to write a few lines ;) Should we write in Polish or English on this thread then ? ;)

Even as I'm enjoying listening to Scary World Theory, part of me wonders whether it will all suddenly seem hollow, like so many things that at first sound like they were designed to appeal to me. Then 1 or 2 tracks it closes with put away any doubts, although all I can recall is their restraint.

(David, how's your 102BT Pt II coming?)

Curt (cgould), Tuesday, 5 November 2002 17:16 (twenty-one years ago) link

haha, Curtis - it was that that got me to thinking. I finished it a while ago, and also re-read it about three weeks ago and was quite happy with the result (though I used 'melisma' again when I meant 'miasma' when I meant 'she sounds like a railway station announcer' - no doubt I'll get a bollocking again.) Thanks much for the copy Curt. My opinion on Lali Puna = excellent all encompassing scary world Theory on a par with 'Entertainment' (Gang of Four. Genuinely this time, I'm not just baiting Alex in NYC.)

Lali Puna - potentially classic. Morr Music and City Centre Offices output seems frighteningly consistent right now. It's completely non-deliberate on my part but most of the best music I've bought this year seems to be German or to have German connections (add a few Kitty Yo things and the Notwist to that too, and Stereo Total). What are Tied and Tickled Trio like?

Actually, I've answered my own question about T&TT. as I downloaded some stuff last night. Hmmm....not convinced on first listening. It seems a bit close to the free-jazz/Tortoise thing and I was never into that. I prefer Lali Puna's atmospherics and the Notwist's melancholic melody.

recording new album at the moment, great cover of Jean-Paul Sartre Experiences 'I Like Rain' on 'Not Given Lightly' comp

Good question! I haven't thought about them in a while, but Faking the Books was one of my favorites of the early 00s. I think I was one of the few who liked it more than SWT (which is also ace IMO).

OMG @ the new tracks!!! I listened to several of these guys' albums several times and never loved them, but these two tracks are fucking great.

<3 these guys & its good to see they didn't just drop off the face of the planet. 1-800-Fear was my jam back in the day. Stevie, one of those tracks is not new, but is in fact the first song from their 2004 LP. I believe "Remember" is a new track, tho. I've never heard of it, at least.

Shit boy I'm totally "reapproaching" their earlier albums or w/e

"Remember" sounds great, can't wait to hear the whole album.
worth tracking down is the song "Out There" from Yukihiro Takahashi's album "Page By Page" from last year, its a Lali Puna track in all but name. its on his myspace http://www.myspace.com/yukihirotakahashi

Just listening to the new album 'Two Windows' now (out yesterday). Really lovely stuff, even the Kings of Leaving n cover. Can't believe it's been seven years.
