In Oz, most people ARE republicans but our esteemrd Govt nobbled the referendum in 1999. Unfortunately the local republican movement is run by a whole crowd of wannabees who couldn't organise a pie fight in the Four and Twenty factory.

But the day will come eventually, although it's very likely England will have the Ashes back first.

Well if we republican who would we have as head of state? Wayne Gretkzy's dad? Currently Ontario's govenor gives her salary to charity since shes a Weston and loaded already so Im not minding the ceremonaly free loading at the moment.
Though the current govenor general is a bit annoying but shes an easy target for This Hour Has 22 Minutes ("Im Adrian Clarkson, and your not"). Her husband should be locked away with Philip and Charles to see who could last the longest without becoming criminally insane.

The argument against the republic in Britain that always impressed me was this (some years ago): President Margaret Thatcher. Now she is dying or at least known by all to be a mad old bat, and we are therefore safe from that, we need hesitate no longer. Blair would be confused in that he thinks he's President already. If it's to be a ceremonial position rather than direct political leadership, my vote goes to Mark E. Smith.

I've just remembered that an annoying news item early today, inserted between vitally important football matches, claimed that today's alleged jubilee festivities ended with "a royal appearance on the balcony and a fly-by". That impressed me, as I didn't even know she could fly.

Someone was on Radio 4 on Saturday and claimed that support for the Jubbly celebrations was evidenced by the upsurge in sales of widescreens TV and packs of beer. That's the beauty of Monarchy - it's so rooted in everyday life.

I've never really undertsood the argument for why we even need a head of state (as well as a head of government.) The ceremonial reason seems utterly pointless and you could easily get away with sending Connie Huq off of Blue Peter or a Dimbleby.

I'm somewhat ambivalent about this. On the one hand, the monarchy is an illiberal imperialist vestige and seems like the sort of thing I would want to oppose in principle. Plus, I don't give two shits about the Royal Family as people and the bullshit celebrity gossip around them. On the other hand, I ... generally like how the constitutional monarchy functions and am not especially inspired by the examples of republics elsewhere. Am genuinely curious to see how they'll work things out in the BC legislature.
