Might be "Strange Invaders". That had a cylindrical vaguely 30s-esque alien spaceship-thingy in. And it was set in small town America with people being replaced...But aren't they all like that?.

If I were an alien wanting to take over the world, that's the last place I'd go, as they'd have to be ready for it by now.

Wasn't "Strange Invaders" set in Manhattan, at least partly? I remember a scene set near Columbia, at 114th and Riverside. And I don't remember blue spheres but it's been a while.
