High Life = erratic but hilarious. One of those things where I can't believe they only did one series because I can remember watching so many of them and not noticing repeats. Keep having almost irrepressible desire to sing theme tune or "Pif Paf Pof" at inappropriate moments. Alan Cumming = classic. I would certainly marry the devil if he turned out to be anything like his representation in God, The Devil and Bob. Rowr. And look, poor mite, he NEEDS a wife, see. And I'd be nice to Smeck. Why are there no GTD&B scripts on the web? I so want to have the exact quote of the bit where the Devil tells a kid at a school baseball match that Smeck is a dog and Smeck says something like, "Yeah. See? Leash, fleas... I'm a dog," and the kid runs away in horror.

I generally hate queeny humour, and I when I saw the trailer for The High Life, I remember thinking "that's going to be the worst thing ever on TV". And yet for some reason - I blame my sister - I watched it and I swear against all my better judgment, it was really funny and is truly the lost British sitcom. Romy And Michelle, on the other hand, is rubbish, and not even Garofalo can save it.

I used to love The High Life, though I would have been quite young when it was on, so I claim critical immunity.

The High Life was brilliant. I was searching for it when I came across this page. The theme song and Piff, Paff Poff are the kind of songs that keep popping into my head. For some reason they have not been repeated for years. (high up in the sky were flying so high oh my oh my were living the high baba baba baba THE HIGH LIFE).Would you ever fly again if you knew they were going to be your crew, especially Captain Duff.

Does anybody remember let the blood run free?

The High Life is my favourite programme of all time...but everyone i speak to about it never saw it, but then i stumble across this web page...oh it's soooo sad they only did one series and only repeted it once..if i knew they were going to do that i would have recorded every episode...the reason there was only one series was because Alan Cumming didn't want to do another series or so i heard along the grapvine.......but still a campain should be made to the BBC to show the series again, for goodness sake we still get 'some mothers do ave em' and 'Fawlty Towers' why not the High Life!!!! I love the theme tune and also often sing it random people.

Steve was recently in Eastenders, playing Niccki Di Marcos maths teacher, Shauna is in Holby City, i don't know about Captain Duff and Alan is off in Stage shows and doing Films.......and i plan to marry him...but we will have to meet first!!!

why is my romy and michele's high school reunion thread forever doomed to loser brits googling some shit oh-those- hilarious-fags tv show?

ethan, Tuesday, 8 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

Beacause it is better. OBV.

I've not seen Romy and Michelle, by the way. ALSO 'funny and faggy' /= The High Life's source of humour at all so SHADDAPA YO FACE smellhead.

Sarah, Tuesday, 8 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

NBC should rename "Will & Grace" to "Funny & Faggy". The first episode after the rename could be a protracted fight between Will and Grace about which one of them gets to be called Funny.

Dan Perry, Tuesday, 8 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

That would be funny, but also A LIE. For Will and Grace is about as funny as a wet weekend in Frinton on Sea.

RickyT, Tuesday, 8 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

the first series was good. the first series was good. the first series was good. repeat mantra like.

I have never seen it

I came across this page while searching for The High Life. Anyway, I think the BBC (or whoever) should be petitioned to repeat The High Life or release it on DVD or something. Definitely a lost classic. Does anyone know a good fan page for it?

'Ooh, dearie me...'

"For Will and Grace is about as funny as a wet weekend in Frinton on Sea."
But that would be funny! You could watch the zombies, er, pensioners slip on the wet pavements and break their hips! Don't talk to me about Frinton, I am the King Of Frinton! I escaped! No-one else does!

DG, Monday, 11 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

And if you made a film about Frinton-on-Sea you could have the guy from JD Wetherspoons turn up and say "Hey everyone! I'm going to build a PUB here!" and the pensioners would all go "AAAARRRGH!" and cower in terror and then he'd win them over by telling them how much he was AGAINST THE EURO and how he was going to have Save the Pound beermats.

five years pass...

My roommate watches this movie pretty much every single day.

roxymuzak, Friday, 9 November 2007 06:03 (sixteen years ago) link

i heard "time after time" in the bookstore the other day and got ambushed by this almost nauseating sense of sadness, equal parts those shamelessly heart-tugging synths and a happy memory of watching this movie with an ex.

romy and michele's high school reunion, as mentioned on the kid's tv thread. i think it's a really solid comedy; genuinely funny dream sequence, ace cast with half-good early part for alan cumming (well, after also playing my choice character for the nintendo 64 goldeneye game, but uh, yeah) and, and, and, of course, janeane garofalo rowr, to liberally quote mark s. plus lisa kudrow being way funnier than in opposite of sex or whatever the hell else she's been in, and really mira sorvino is good too for the most part. 'excuse me, i cut my foot earlier and it's bleeding and now my shoe is filling up with blood'. BUT WHAT DO YOU THINK???

Funny . but a movie that contains janeane garofalo and alan cumming can never be bad. Peroid. Its a rule in the anthony easton guide to films .

It's sweet, though, when she says "I'll dance with you, Romy" and then they hug and sadly sway on the dancefloor.
