Making me glad I live in Woodside and not Ridgewood though I've debated the switch. My Thai options (and Tibetan/Nepali) are off the hook.

Sheeeit. I'd probably eat takeout every night.

responding from the MTA thread--

the finback brewery is a fun place and i've seen tons of kids there, it's very spacious with lots of board games and stuff lying around.

my wife went to zum stammtisch with her folks and said it was a trip. i like gottscheer hall in ridgewood for germanic kitsch. great pretzels, very cheap beer.

i think the woodside/jackson heights/elmhurst corridor is probably some of the most concentrated good eating in the country if not the world

adam, Monday, 25 July 2016 15:33 (seven years ago) link

Is Finback offering any food at this point?

socka flocka-jones (man alive), Monday, 25 July 2016 15:34 (seven years ago) link

bags of chips iirc

adam, Monday, 25 July 2016 15:47 (seven years ago) link

Corrato II Pizza on Myrtle does a gluten-free crust iirc that is pretty good tho disproportionately expensive for a pizza. We've taken to making our own pizza but I would try theirs again. I don't think their other location offers it, unfortunately.

Sent you an email James Redd re visiting Ramones exhibit

curmudgeon, Monday, 25 July 2016 16:58 (seven years ago) link

Ah, yes. Got it earlier thanks. Will reply later.

The Professor of Hard Rain (James Redd and the Blecchs), Monday, 25 July 2016 17:29 (seven years ago) link

So I saw the Ramones exhibit last Friday-- old cool flyers plus bland later ones; Dee Dee's terrible high school report card; photos and artwork by the folks associated with them; tvs with Ramones videos on them plus a room showing the 1976 (or 77 or?) concert from London that became the Ramones first live album. I enjoyed it although it wasn't super comprehensive. Fun and entertaining enough.

We also saw the Bearing Witness: William Gropper drawings exhibit. Nice left-wing stuff from around the 1930s to the '60s. Plus the giant Panorama scale model of NYC. Then we went and saw the Unisphere and on to Citi Filed to see the Mets lose to the Rockies.

In Flushing we had tasty Muslim Lamb Chops at Chinese restaurant Fu Ran and we also got Indian food at Dosa Hutt.

Saturday was back to Manhattan and then out to Brooklyn

One of these years will meet up w you NYC ilxors....

curmudgeon, Tuesday, 2 August 2016 16:32 (seven years ago) link

Sounds like you did all the right things. If you're ever in the area again you could do Mexican at Nixtamal. I'm a big fan of those muslim lamb chops at Fu Run though. Incidentally I used to love a place in Jersey City that was also called Dosa Hut, although I doubt they're connected.

The Times always quotes the top of the market for some reason -- either to please their real estate industry advertisers or on some presumption that there's a certain class of apartment their aspirational readers wouldn't even consider worthy.

Ate dinner at Mustang Thakali in JH and it was just great.

Then ate brunch at Alobar and it was pretty good -- typical but above-average brunch fair and VERY good with kids (lots of space).

do you think i could get a studio in FH next spring for $1300/mo?

The Hon. J. Piedmont Mumblethunder (Dr Morbius), Monday, 8 August 2016 15:35 (seven years ago) link

Hmm, that's on the low end but maybe not out of the question. I see a decent number of studios listed for 1400-1600, and maybe you can negotiate on rent a little. This one is $1350

What's the deal with Richmond Hill? Seems to be one of the few remaining places inside city limits I might actually be able to afford a 3-4BR detached house.

Never been there, but appears to border Kew Gardens and Jamaica, so your guess as good as mine as to its deal.

nothing

but I was gonna bump the thread to say I finally tried Chao Thai and it was really good. Probably about the greatest lack of atmosphere I've ever seen -- brightly lit cramped room with white vinyl siding (like the kind you see on the exterior crappy queens houses) on the interior walls.

It used to be orange.

Except for one terrible visit when the chef must've been sick or away, Chao is consistently our favorite thai place, especially the larb.

Khao Kang is still our other favorite though it's a different style being steam table. Really intense flavors.

Another great surprise is that the market across the street from Sripraphai, which used to be Inthira Thai, is now called 3 Aunties, and they have all kinds of prepared foods and grocery items. Got dinner to go there recently and it was great. And they had all these samples out, got some frozen herb sausage and delicious green sauce.

dan selzer, Saturday, 6 May 2017 19:45 (six years ago) link

Yeah we had some kind of braised pig leg and greens dish that was just insanely good. Chives DUMPLINGS! and seafood stir fry also very good.

Also we went to PS1 today and the art was all really good but M Wells kind of let us down.

there's probly a 1 in 3 chance i'll be living in Queens in July. maybe u ppl will get a goddamn FAP together by then.

The Thai area of Elmhurst has become very charming over the years. Last night we tried Pata Papelan - fun bar with good cocktails but absolutely TERRIBLE food. I'm pretty sure one of the dishes was literally a microwave meal from Costco. Another one had canned tuna in it, another was I'm pretty sure made with packaged ramen noodles. The fourth one was just inedible and I don't know where it came from. Also otherwise nice atmosphere was reduced a bit by oversized TVs in a small space and bad music. Still, would return for a drink only, maybe after eating at one of the legit great restaurants on Woodside Ave.

Had a drink there once but no food. Was fun. But we LIVE at Khao Kang across the street. Our absolute number 1 place to eat in New York.

dan selzer, Friday, 25 August 2017 16:10 (six years ago) link

Also can't remember if I mentioned it, but 3 Aunties, the new thai market across the street from Sripraphai that took over from Inthira is great. They have all the grocery stuff but also prepared foods and snacks cooked up on a hotplate in the back. Got some very gingery herbal sausage out of the freezer and fresh green chili sauce.

dan selzer, Friday, 25 August 2017 16:12 (six years ago) link

We almost went to Khao Kang - those were the two places that the same person recommended to us. I'm really shocked that she recommended Pata (unless she hadn't tried the food and just liked the drinks and atmosphere). I'm really mad we didn't go to Khao since we don't get out a lot and this felt like a wasted meal. Is Spicy Shallot good? Was pretty full.

Honestly I guess it's close enough to us that I could just bring home takeout on the way from work.

Spicy Shallot is ok, its more standard fair. They have some of the real stuff and is probably better than your average thai place, but it's popular with local youngsters who get sushi as well as thai dishes. I wouldn't go there over Khao Kang, Ayada, Chao, Srip etc.

dan selzer, Friday, 25 August 2017 16:46 (six years ago) link

Yeah I've had good experiences at Chao, Srip and Ayada. Guess Khao is next to try.

Khao is totally different, everything's pre-made and on a steam table and you get your choice. They can't dumb it down for you because it's already made. You pay a buck extra to get a fried egg. I don't know how they fry eggs and the stay runny just sitting there.

Go on weekends and there's additional specials like homok and great deserts.

dan selzer, Friday, 25 August 2017 17:37 (six years ago) link

certain dishes are so spicy and flavorful that they remind me of the first time I had really kick-ass thai, where your mouth and brain and stomach are all buzzing with delight and confusion.

dan selzer, Friday, 25 August 2017 17:38 (six years ago) link

two weeks pass...

Almost went to Khao tonight but it doesn't really have much room to sit and had the kids with us, so we went to Ayada. It's still really good, left feeling almost high. Whole fish with mango sauce.

A huge difference between Ayada and a lot of typical american thai places is that they have such fresh ingredients that you can eat a really good meal that doesn't rely heavily on rice, noodles, curry, etc. We shared a couple of salads and the fish and I didn't even touch the rice. Felt much better than I usually do after thai food.

We had a late lunch at Sripraphai today. Usually avoid it on weekends but it was excellent. Really nice when the back is open and we brought our 6 mo old. They are super kid friendly there and there were tons of kids. They bring a plastic plate and a little cup and all the main servers love the babies. They have a new menu with an item I'd never seen before, chicken laarb meatballs. It was like they took some chicken laarb, made little meatballs out of them and fried them. They were really good. Good junk food, would be great w/ beer.

dan selzer, Sunday, 10 September 2017 03:38 (six years ago) link

sounds good. I haven't been to srip in a long time, glad it's stayed good. Sometimes these destination places decline in quality.
