HANNIBAL on NBC seems amazing and therefore deserves it's own thread!

I recently again saw Bryan Fuller's gleeful tweet about how they got "button stitching" past the censors. Classic censor-dodging.

I loved those puppet recaps!!

one month passes...

Just watched all of this in about three days

I wasn't quite sure what we were meant to infer (in S3) about what happened with Hannibal and Mischa

Apart from that and a few killers of the week being a bit corny, what a show

three weeks pass...

I'm not usually sensitive to stuff like this, but what those final couple of episodes with Chilton... man, really disturbing. That might have shaken me more than anything I've ever seen on television.

That was the leg? Or did he get skinned?

His lips being bitten off. Then the rest of his face being burned off.

Evan R, Monday, 17 October 2016 19:35 (seven years ago) link

the lips biting off was def hard on the eyes

Spottie, Monday, 17 October 2016 19:36 (seven years ago) link

iirc that sequence was very specifically lit/designed to not upset censors

It's a sign of how few people were watching that nobody was upset about it

A special theatrical screening of the finale of NBC’s “Hannibal,” a nightmare fantasy from Bryan Fuller (Pushing Daisies) that reinterpreted Thomas Harris’ novels through the eyes of an expressionist, polymorphous sensualist. Reworking much of the plot of Harris’ Red Dragon, but in a more hallucinatory way than in earlier film versions, the finale builds to an orgiastic release of pent-up intellectual and sexual energy so intense that viewers may need a cigarette and a towel afterward.

Fuller will join the audience via Skype to discuss the finale, the legacy of his cult classic, his new Starz series American Gods, and what a hypothetical fourth season of “Hannibal” would look like. A panel of New York-based Fannibals will discuss the legacy of the show, including its impact on popular art.

In person: Leila Taylor, Creative Director at the Brooklyn Public Library; novelist Rob Hart (New Yorked, The Woman from Prague); composer Matt Marks of Alarm Will Sound; illustrator and author Janice Poon, food stylist for Hannibal and author of Feeding Hannibal; Dr. Lori Morimoto, independent scholar of fan studies; (via Skype) Hannibal creator and executive producer Bryan Fuller.

uh, HELLOOOOOOO

one year passes...

I've read most of this thread (up to the end of where I am on the show, end of season 2). I can't believe all this blood was on NBC; it makes us giggle every time there are uber violent slashings.

I should go back and rewatch Wonderfalls. I think I tried when it was on but it didn't grab me. I may be in the minority where the character of Alana Bloom grates on me.

gasp

j., Tuesday, 12 March 2019 13:37 (five years ago) link

yeah, I've been rooting for her to die. I just keep saying "why is this character so thirsty."

Yerac, Tuesday, 12 March 2019 13:40 (five years ago) link

I'd be interested in knowing how much gore was reinstated for the DVDs because, yes, this show is stunningly graphic.

Just remembered that I never actually finished the series because binging all three seasons in one straight shot became incredibly oppressive at a point. Almost unquestionably the darkest show ever aired on network television.

Goody Rickels on the Dime (Old Lunch), Tuesday, 12 March 2019 13:44 (five years ago) link

AFAIK the DVD edits aren't any different? The episodes as originally aired were unbelievably violent

Simon H., Tuesday, 12 March 2019 13:48 (five years ago) link

iirc alana has a slight character shift in season 3 that is incredibly excellent

jolene club remix (BradNelson), Tuesday, 12 March 2019 13:53 (five years ago) link

I think I am going to finish all three seasons in 3 weeks (netflix in south america). I don't know. All the gore with the blaséness of Hannibal and the ridiculousness of some situations gives it levity. I didn't read any of the books and have only seen SilenceotL.
It reminds me of The Cell a bit although I haven't seen that since it was in the theaters.

Yerac, Tuesday, 12 March 2019 13:54 (five years ago) link

LIke the season 2 finale was so extreme we both were laughing.

mh, Tuesday, 12 March 2019 15:00 (five years ago) link

I think the only major change from the tv release is the inclusion of an episode they left out? The one with Molly Shannon (?) in the first season was pulled due to current events involving child murderers.

mh, Tuesday, 12 March 2019 15:02 (five years ago) link

Alana isn't much of a character really but I like Dhavernas a lot

Simon H., Tuesday, 12 March 2019 15:03 (five years ago) link

I thought she was miscast, but then I saw upthread that she was in Wonderfalls so that makes sense now.

I am really glad that they went with Mads over David Tennant. I liked Tennant as the villain in Jessica Jones but his presence is completely different.

Yerac, Tuesday, 12 March 2019 15:06 (five years ago) link

Wonderfalls is great, and Dhavernas is very different on it.

The murders on this show were so insanely over the top. The totem pole of corpses, the angel wings, the mushroom people!

Roz, Tuesday, 12 March 2019 15:20 (five years ago) link

I really liked the first couple of seasons of Vikings so the blood eagle (angel wings) was very familiar.

Yerac, Tuesday, 12 March 2019 15:34 (five years ago) link

the imagery in the grain silo episodes was amazing

mh, Tuesday, 12 March 2019 15:35 (five years ago) link

I've been enjoying this twitter account lately: https://twitter.com/madsdoingthings

Mads is a ridiculous person.

Roz, Tuesday, 12 March 2019 15:38 (five years ago) link

I have a friend who admitted she was more interested in Hugh Dancy and his portrayal of Will over Mads

she is dead to me now

mh, Tuesday, 12 March 2019 15:40 (five years ago) link

I am going to waste so much time today on that twitter.

Hugh Dancy is fine. Ugh imagine if it was him and David Tennant. Much too similar.

Yerac, Tuesday, 12 March 2019 15:44 (five years ago) link

^^oh god no. Yeah that just wouldn't work at all.

this was great fun btw, i'm kicking myself for not posting about it afterward so i can look back on specifics. Hannibal fans are nerdy and awesome.

There was an early ep of someone encased in a beehive and/or treetrunk iirc? The practical makeup effects for that was breathtaking

That was the episode with Amanda Plummer doing lobotomies.

Also, ^^^ I would totally watch them in a show called "Murder Husbands: no subtext"

Yerac, Sunday, 17 March 2019 01:59 (five years ago) link

how’d you like the scene where Gillian’s character finds out (or the audience is clued into) who was traditionally fed the diet she’s been on?

mh, Sunday, 17 March 2019 04:38 (five years ago) link

I loved almost all of the trippy first half of S3. I did like Alanna more too. During the kaleidoscope Alanna/Margot scene I said "Oh, they got some payoff for casting two actresses who look a lot alike."

Gah, all of it was so cinematic and darkly funny, I adored it. ( I did start to get a little annoyed at the very metered dialogue though, especially in the Gillian Anderson scenes, but it let me look at her hair more).

Yerac, Sunday, 17 March 2019 14:25 (five years ago) link

I am sad it's over.
I did say in the first half of season one that they were so in love with each other. Killing Eve really does a good job of playing with that too.

Yerac, Sunday, 17 March 2019 14:29 (five years ago) link

hadn't occurred to me but killing eve kinda is hannibal lite
