liking Owlboy a whole lot; it feels like a late-period SNES platformer stuffed to the gills with modern gameplay amenities. buy it while it's on sale right now.
btw does anyone have an opinion about that game Steep? the pitch is that it's like skate (RIP), but with snowboarding rather than skateboarding; it sounds appealing to me, but even with the sale discount it's still $40.

i'm going to be up for getting a new laptop soon and i'm torn. on one hand i feel like since my #1 activity is gaming i should probably switch back to a PC but otoh i like using OSX significantly more than i like using Windows. why can't apple just make a good gaming laptop?
― Mordy, Friday, 10 February 2017 15:11 (seven years ago) link
how much does whatever difference there is between windows and osx actually come up day-to-day with what you're using a laptop for? personally i can't see any sense in getting a mac, including paying the mac premium, when you know you'll be playing a lot of games.
― Roberto Spiralli, Friday, 10 February 2017 15:18 (seven years ago) link
i use both at work - literally side by side. a lenovo touch screen ideapad and a macbook retina pro. i find it significantly more pleasant using the macbook. just simple things like Mail vs. Outlook. cannot stand using Outlook.
― Mordy, Friday, 10 February 2017 15:29 (seven years ago) link
Right there with you dudeAt the moment I'm using boot camp on my 2014 retina mbpro to play through resident evil 7. I have a stand alone cheap windows laptop as well, which can play the game at a better frame rate and resolution - but the regular user experience is so much worse. So rather than switching back and forth I'm just using the mac (and now my mac partition is running out of space). Can't win
― calstars, Friday, 10 February 2017 16:26 (seven years ago) link
so i've got my ps4 streaming wonderfully thru my macbook w/ zero lag and great looking graphics so i don't actually feel like i'm missing any games (and i don't have to deal w/ the pita of bootcamp)
― Mordy, Friday, 10 February 2017 16:29 (seven years ago) link
i gave into bootcamp this time around for Overwatcha decision was that Windows 10 doesn't nag you/cripple you to register, so you can run it pretty much forever without having to buy itthat said, my Steam backlog (even counting only the Mac games) has more games than I can ever play, I'm sure it's the same for you
― Nhex, Friday, 10 February 2017 17:06 (seven years ago) link
yes, definitely. not to mention games i sunk considerably time into, wandered away from meaning to go back to (coughpillarsofeternitycough) and likely never will

Am loving these pseudo-ZX Spectrum games being made for pc, like Rock Boshers. This latest one called Z-Exemplar takes it's style from the shootem up R-Type conversion. I just purchased it for £4

played a game called the shrouded isle. resource allocation game in the guise of managing a human sacrifice cult. not a ton to it but nicely done and was good fun figuring it out. would recommend if it pops up in a sale or bundle, or if c. 3 hours of game for $10 is not too off putting.

help me out, ilx. desperate for a new good game, but nothing on the horizon appeals.
likes: STALKER, splinter cell (esp latest ones), dishonoreds, mgs5, that deus ex one, gta vc & sa, dayz, samorost, inside, firewatch. well-written sneaky-about stuff basically.
dislikes: cutscenes.
is there anything recent (past 4 or 5 years) i should try out? get even's shooting system is too unwieldy and unfun, gta5's script is dismal & early missions zero enjoyment. worth persisting with deus ex mankind divided or trying out witcher 3? at the moment im thinking of finishing off mgs5 but it all became some unholy samey grind once i got to the second island. failing that, back to my first love: sensible soccer 96-97.

witcher 3 100%. check out prey and horizon zero dawn too.

thanks mordy, had witcher 3 installed a while and never got round to it but heard tons of good reports. not heard of HZD before but it's on the list for when i get round to buying a ps4. prey sounds perfect, can't believe i hadn't heard of it yet - thanks again!

Yeah, I'm keen on Into The Breach - it's been sat on my Steam Wishlist since last Feb when it was announced, with their infuriating "When it's ready" release date. Excited it now has a release date, and that it's released on my birthday!
― CraigG, Wednesday, 7 February 2018 16:33 (six years ago) link
xposti would very much look forward to both of those.
there are so many games right now. it is overwhelming. especially considering that while there are lots of excellent shorter games, there are also more and more games that you could conceivably devote years to without getting bored (Europa Universalis, for example).
― Karl Malone, Wednesday, 7 February 2018 16:34 (six years ago) link

my steam library just got too overwhelming so i had to organize it into genres. not sure if this'll interest anyone who isn't me but here are the categories i drew up and was mostly able to sort everything. since you can tag games with multiple categories i was able to sort stuff by producers that i like as well as genres, themes and some other notable sorting areas. by the end there were some redundancies that i will probably eventually sort out:
4x, action, adventure, bejeweled-esque, board game, card games, city builder, cyberpunk, double fine, dystopian, fallen london tree, fighter, first-person shooter, horror, interactive fiction, literary, lovecraftian, mcmillen, metroidvania, multiplayer, music, open world, paradox, platformer, political, puzzle, racing, roguelike, rpg, rts, science fiction, shoot 'em up, shooter, simulator, space, sports, steampunk, subset games, supergiant, survival, telltale, total war, tower defense, turn based strategy, unity engine, war game, zombies

Thimbleweed Park is the free game on Epic this month. Yes please.
Next month is Slime Rancher, which I've definitely also had my eye on.

I thought this "Netflix of gaming" thing was what Stadia was going to be, their $10 sub for what, 4k streaming + Destiny 2? seems very lightweight in comparison
