She has too powerful a voice and presence to murmur over slow tracks.

It's not all that though. I get the impression that they're the kind of tracks which will reveal their underlying structure and power over time.

"ten miles high" reminds me heavily of moloko

also idk if sustained murmuring is really a new direction for róisín

The beats tended to be kinetic ("Dear Miami").

I like "Ten Miles High" too.

The burrito of ennui (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Wednesday, 13 July 2016 14:50 (seven years ago) link

imo it's the best song from both albums

btw can someone tell me how to pronounce her first name? Is it RO-SHEEN?

I don't want to embarrass myself this weekend around fellow music nerds.

iirc yes

Nervous Sleep is pretty extraordinary (this may be the one that Alfred is thinking of most with his "mumbling over slow tracks" description)

chap, Wednesday, 13 July 2016 15:06 (seven years ago) link

Enjoying this a lot. It was less instant than Hairless Toys but I'm enjoying it more as a whole after a few plays. Some of it reminds me of a more mellow version of Ruby Blue.

Kitchen Person, Wednesday, 13 July 2016 15:09 (seven years ago) link

that's correct Alfred. The accents indicate an elongated vowel sound

whoa take her up to monto is really great. sort of like if all the weird sui generis organically sprouting ideas of hairless toys were pushed even further and the carefulness abandoned

^^^ yep

like the surprise groove in "evil eyes" but happening all the time

it's all much more labyrinthine than the way most of the tracks on Hairless Toys would slowly unfold. i don't enjoy it quite as much but it's definitely an incredible 2 hours or so that have come from those sessions

ufo, Wednesday, 3 August 2016 13:03 (seven years ago) link

This album just gets better and better. Lip Service is my current favourite. I keep getting it stuck in my head.

Kitchen Person, Sunday, 14 August 2016 23:19 (seven years ago) link

It really does get better and better.
That bit in the middle of 'Thoughts Wasted' when the flutey noises start poppin' and the male vocal accompanies her is #1.

Serious contender for best of the year.

I seriously regret not seeing her in Chicago in November. I didn't take to Take Her Up to Monto as much as Hairless Toys, but I think I need to spend more time with it.

Love the moment on "Uninvited guests" where the devil may care slacker vibe turns into a gorgeous wide screen bridge. Roisin excels at these emotional shifts in songs, sections that change your perception of the narrative

are you referring to the DJ Koze tracks or has something been announced??

joshywinty (josh), Friday, 16 March 2018 18:59 (six years ago) link

the DJ Koze tracks (which I still need to hear but that involves prying myself away from essaie pas)

aloha darkness my old friend (katherine), Friday, 16 March 2018 19:08 (six years ago) link

Definitely worth prying from Katherine. roisin can do no wrong but the album version of seeing aliens I’d probably better tbh (cut by 3 mins )

My 5yo watched some Roisin Murphy videos with me last night, and now she is a full-on fan. Especially enjoys the dresses, I think.

It was premiered on Nemone's radio show yesterday. It sounded really good - probably the most "pop" thing either of them have done in a good while.

boxedjoy, Thursday, 3 May 2018 16:37 (five years ago) link

that's out digitally now and both tracks rule

i can’t wait to make these singles my arbitrary album of the year

flamenco drop (BradNelson), Saturday, 5 May 2018 04:05 (five years ago) link

£20 for a single? £80 for an eight track album is taking the piss.

Heavy Messages (jed_), Saturday, 5 May 2018 11:42 (five years ago) link

Of the two, I think I prefer 'Innocence'

Jeff W, Saturday, 5 May 2018 14:53 (five years ago) link

I would bet this turns into an album, the same way Sequins did

I'm just now listening to these

Johnny Fever, Sunday, 6 May 2018 21:38 (five years ago) link

There's nothing arbitrary about it, surely. When they're all out that's an album. I'm sure it will be sold as such post-vinyl release.

lol i briefly forgot that sequins turned into ruby blue so i trust y’all
