new ep is dope (safe to say).. it's deceptively simple-sounding. i wonder how much of the material is actually sourced from the Cheetah (ms800?) synthesizer, the short interludes sound like they could be.
― braunld (Lowell N. Behold'n), Friday, 8 July 2016 20:59 (seven years ago) link
It's ok, kind of boring tbh
I still prefer the more mellow, slower sound loud tracks
― calstars, Friday, 8 July 2016 21:19 (seven years ago) link
cheetah 3 + 7 TEAC are a couple of the mellow, slower SC tracks.. but they sound better/more detailed (especially 7) on the ep. cheetah 3 (Cirklon3) does sound livelier in the context of the other cheetah ep tracks. the whole thing has an Analord 2 vibe, it's very chill
― braunld (Lowell N. Behold'n), Friday, 8 July 2016 22:02 (seven years ago) link
analord 2 vibe = sold (not that i wasn't already)
― clouds, Saturday, 9 July 2016 02:39 (seven years ago) link
it's nowhere near as dark/brooding as Phonatacid... just, real relaxed. kinda goofy, 8-bit adventures
― braunld (Lowell N. Behold'n), Saturday, 9 July 2016 03:36 (seven years ago) link
the cd sounds freakin' fantastic on the stereo. way more present/direct/dry than Syro
― braunld (Lowell N. Behold'n), Saturday, 9 July 2016 03:38 (seven years ago) link
kinda reminds me of the "10 Ragas to a Disco Beat" sound, very clean and if you crank it up it sounds wonderful
― frogbs, Thursday, 14 July 2016 18:37 (seven years ago) link
not sure I would have even recognized the first track as Aphex
― 0 / 0 (lukas), Thursday, 14 July 2016 19:13 (seven years ago) link
haven't tired of this.. a very relaxed and rock solid (consistent) series of tracks. anybody else playing it regularly?

i spent like two years listening to drum track sharts from tech house producers and orphaned deejay selek effortlessly owns them all.

he's very high on the bangin' spectrum, like steve poindexter was, but different time and context.

― clouds, Monday, 29 August 2016 13:05 (seven years ago) link
love it. don't say it because i don't want to listen to arguments from nostalgists but he's at the height of his powers right now imo

Chosen Lords/Rushup Edge/Ophaned Deejay Selek/Syro/Cheetax EP is a pretty remarkable run - clouds is right, but to some extent it's coming at the expense of his unparalleled oddness - he's not quite as fun to talk about anymore. Reminds me a bit of what's going on with Autechre, the old stuff is classic but I find myself reaching for the new stuff much more often. Even if for no other reason than it sounds fantastic.
― frogbs, Monday, 29 August 2016 13:40 (seven years ago) link
yeah, it all sounds amazing.
― map, Monday, 29 August 2016 15:14 (seven years ago) link
Aphex and Ae's progressions have felt very different to me. Autechre seem to have always been striving for the type of sound they've achieved in the last decade from the very start, and now that they've really nailed down their process, they're having fun and experimenting with composition and timbre in really rewarding ways.
Conversely, RDJ seems to have kind of locked in to this particular sound and mode of composition ever since Analord that is starting to get a bit stale to my ears, though a few tracks on some of his recent EPs have been interesting, they still exhibit a lot of the "sameness" of the rest of his 21st century output. I miss his playfulness, that trollish desire to take the piss in tracks in some creatively brilliant ways, that edge, and it feels like he's now simply making very satisfyingly cromulent electronic music.
― octobeard, Monday, 29 August 2016 16:34 (seven years ago) link
yeah, i dunno. there's blatant goofiness to "CIRCLONT14" (shrymoming mix), with the shifting hi-hat patterns and instances where the beat is so straightforward, they're augmented/emphasized as if he's saying "look at how dumb this is", and the gnarled, 20-step bass breakdown midway through the track - it's like an elaborate piss take. papat4 is just joyous.. the slick, rubbery bass lines are so effortlessly pert and buoyant-sounding, and those stuttered snare and tambourine bits -- it's so malleable and fluid-sounding. and then there's "s950tx16wasr10" (earth portal mix), which is possibly the 'deepest', most fleshed-out and varied track on the album, sort of a late grower. the first couple tracks of the album do feel refined, but Syro is all over the place, and it's undeniably playful. the Tuss eps really are the cream of the crop, imo. it does seem like he's zeroed in on a rich (but not super-varied?) sound palette. whatever mode he might be locked into, it's pleasurable enough. the way you described Ae in the first part of your post could to apply to RDJ over the last decade, though he's not fucking around with structure and composition in such extreme ways (like Ae).. i wouldn't say that he's solidified yet.

There's a really cool website here: http://user18081971.watmm.com/
that lets you vote on the various soundcloud tracks and then see what tracks have gotten the most votes. It's actually really helpful for sorting through the soundcloud tracks and I've found quite a few that are great. There's also a complete rip of the soundcloud tracks on watmm's aphex twin forum. Or I think you can find a torrent somewhere also.
I wasn't very excited about the SC tracks at first but now that I've heard some of the top voted ones, I think that there's some album quality stuff in there. The Cheetah track itself I think was chosen for release because of how many votes it got on that site, lol.

frogbs--no, but you do have to link it to a soundcloud account, I think, which is somewhat annoying.

lol at this post on reddit -
There was an aphex twin show I saw where he literally sat on a couch in front of his laptop for almost 2 hours and just played music. He could have been playing minecraft for all I know. I never really understand live electronic music but it seems like there’s no right or wrong way to approach it.
― calstars, Sunday, 5 November 2017 12:44 (six years ago) link
Ha, the one time I saw him live he did this. There was a stage with a couch on it. He reclined with a laptop while three people in giant Day-Glo teddy bear costumes stumbled around.

2002, no visible presence, just someone in giant Teddy Bear furry doing the same exact dance for 40-50 minutes over his "DJ" set (was billed as a performer at the festival).

"Music writer John Doran ventures into the strange world of Richard D James. Over the course of three decades James, known to his legion of hardcore fans as Aphex Twin, has achieved the primary but evasive aim of most serious musicians - the invention, exploration and curation of a truly unique and inimitable sound."
