settling for "when i needed you". heart of noise, in dreams at night

one whole year with this beautiful miracle

otm

johnny crunch, Wednesday, 29 June 2016 11:30 (seven years ago) link

For quite a while a friend of mine thought she was singing "you come to me in jeans at night". Like maybe this was a criticism: dude should at least swap to chinos in the evening.

Tim F, Wednesday, 29 June 2016 12:19 (seven years ago) link

all that

ejemplo (crüt), Wednesday, 29 June 2016 12:41 (seven years ago) link

lol xp

I went with Your Type. Breaks my heart every time I listen to it. Other songs in close contention were Boy Problems (that second half of the chorus), LA Hallucinations (for black hole in golden cup line), Black Heart, and Favourite Colour. Ultimately, really hard to decide. There's not a dud in the bunch.

how's life, Wednesday, 29 June 2016 12:49 (seven years ago) link

man, it was a year ago – the week before July 4 – that I blasted this thing in my car for the first time.

i haven't heard those last 2 tracks they're not on the spotify version. any good?

this is hard but went with When I Needed You

ciderpress, Wednesday, 29 June 2016 13:14 (seven years ago) link

Really enjoyed the Song Exploder ep on that song.

how's life, Wednesday, 29 June 2016 13:21 (seven years ago) link

This is a really tough choice. I am debating between RAWM, Gimme Love, Boy Problems, Let's Get Lost, Warm Blood and Favourite Colour.

Kinda surprised to see so much LA Hallucinations love. It's a decent little song, but it has always stuck out like a sore thumb to me. It just doesn't feel like the same woman singing the other songs lyrically to me. It sounds like a song that was written with Ke$ha in mind, or at least somebody more famous and whose schtick is more in line with debauchery.

brontosaur, Wednesday, 29 June 2016 14:37 (seven years ago) link

wanted to go with Your Type or Boy Problems or Let's Get Lost, but damn if Run Away still doesn't get me the most jazzed.

"Run Away With Me," which I'll almost certainly be counting among the 5 or so finest singles of the decade in a few years.

black heart all the way, love that song deeply

intheblanks, Wednesday, 29 June 2016 23:13 (seven years ago) link

This is very tough. Probably going with the title track but could also be "Boy Problems" (among 4+ others)

Spencer Chow, Thursday, 30 June 2016 00:06 (seven years ago) link

Feels pretty lame but "Run Away With Me" really is my favorite. Probably "Let's Get Lost" and "Favorite Colour" after that.

justfanoe (Greg Fanoe), Thursday, 30 June 2016 02:59 (seven years ago) link

Run Away With Me gets my vote but every song here is essential.

Kitchen Person, Thursday, 30 June 2016 03:01 (seven years ago) link

Let's Get Lost was my route into this, but Boy Problems has usurped it in recent months. Not that keen on the first few songs on this, but by that point it's straight sailing.

TARANTINO! (dog latin), Friday, 1 July 2016 11:14 (seven years ago) link

Gone with Let's Get Lost cos I don't think it'll do very well.

GREAT song, but the video is pretty annoying. The combing is excessive (we get it, it's supposed to be a handicap), and then all the weird product placement. Do they really need Mini, Freixenet and Lavazza to underwrite the cost of this?

Warm Blood

omar little, Wednesday, 3 October 2018 18:23 (five years ago) link

Love it. This bodes well for the new album.
The syncopation in the chorus was the hook for me. Also that rim-shot percussion that announces the drop in the chorus.

enochroot, Thursday, 1 November 2018 12:38 (five years ago) link

i think the 'back on my beat' line in the chorus doesn't quite resolve in the sort of satisfying way i'd want it to and that's what i dislike? but it's still pretty good and growing on me

It's a nice single, but I'm surprised she's played it so safe. Feel like this would have fit perfectly on Side-B.

kinda curious to see if this ends up being a tight focused record or (given how prolific she's said to be in the studio) a huge stat-juking behemoth

this is nice, would order the lead singles as follows:

I Really Like You => Party for One => Cut to the Feeling

aloha darkness my old friend (katherine), Thursday, 1 November 2018 20:21 (five years ago) link

Cut To The Feeling was just a standalone single for a film track. i presume you mean call me maybe?

and xp: there's another, longer thread for carly but there wasn't a whole lot of conversation there about Cut To The Feeling either

monotony, Thursday, 1 November 2018 21:00 (five years ago) link

No, "Cut the Feeling" -- it was huge on Twitter, I guess, haha (and a great song).

greta van vliet (morrisp), Thursday, 1 November 2018 21:07 (five years ago) link

I consider it a lead single, that's how it was treated

aloha darkness my old friend (katherine), Thursday, 1 November 2018 21:07 (five years ago) link

good song, but a notch under the Emotion singles, imo. i'm hoping they're just getting her back in the public consciousness and the next one is the real banger.

dentyne ice, Saturday, 3 November 2018 02:18 (five years ago) link

I don’t really like this song, but thematically it’s a nice variant on her thing where she makes songs about being right at the beginning of some great transcendent experience, full of anticipation. This time it’s not some budding romance but a withering one and she’s excited to reconnect with herself? I mean I know it’s about lol masturbation but that’s my takeaway.

crüt, Saturday, 3 November 2018 02:30 (five years ago) link

my favorite part of this song is the "i'm not over you"/"i'm not over this" backing vocal

princess of hell (BradNelson), Saturday, 3 November 2018 05:05 (five years ago) link

drum solo after "back on my beat" also

princess of hell (BradNelson), Saturday, 3 November 2018 05:10 (five years ago) link

I appreciate that she actually says "makin' love to myself" rather than some rote euphemism

wayne trotsky (Simon H.), Saturday, 3 November 2018 05:14 (five years ago) link

Love her music, but Carly's videos are almost always terrible and this one is no exception. Like, even ignoring the egregious product placement, it just seems like it was conceived by a high school drama class.

but this... is itself a euphemism?

anyway, this song is like 90% of the way to being great and I think I've figured out what the 10% is -- there are some unfortunate things happening with the vocal production on the verses. most apparent on "some-BODy's in your way"

Yeah "Cry" is the standout from Side B by far

I don't think I voted in this poll because I got on the CRJ train a little late but "Never Get to Hold You" is what I would vote for now. That song sounds like the warmest hug
