I think by Tommen's death she had gone numb, given her loss of control over him combined with her acceptance of the witch's "prophecy". That was my read.

...you've spent years trolling a board for a show you literally do not watch, clearly you have the time

oh i forgot about the prophecy. what was it again?
my first thought was that it was WAY out character for her to be like "whatever, I'm queen now" (think of how she reacted to Joffrey's death--perhaps Lena Headey's finest moment) but yeah i think the contrast is meant to be instructive...

the boy king's suicide seems like a huge crisis-within-a-crisis to me; the show just kind of breezed over it to get to the coronation scene. "i'll be regent again, oh ok, i guess i'll be queen, tra la"
i was half-expecting cersei to do something active and cynically "heroic" like rushing out to lead the effort to save the city after the whole cathedral neighborhood had been incinerated. aren't these people supposed to be clever? throw in a reference to thyestes but forget about nero i guess.
there was really no sense of a public suffering a disaster. descent isn't the only aspect to legitimacy...

yeah i didnt like the episode as much as others because i felt so much of it was rushed. especially because interesting like what you point out things were glossed over.
― ryan, Monday, 27 June 2016 21:10 (seven years ago) link
interesting things, that is

― helpless before THRILLARY (Dr Morbius), Monday, 27 June 2016 21:28 (seven years ago) link
It did definitely feel this was one of the only episodes where there was anything memorable or noticeable about the score
The only other bit of non-title-theme music from the whole show I could hum is that doomy refrain that plays when something sinister is being done in the name of the Lord of Light
Everything else about this episode was obviously completely, mind-destroyingly incomprehensible, just colours and shapes, sad really

u guys need to do better! the shows obvs too big to just appeal to nerds (answering the question in the original thread title) its not even that fantasy, i for one have never read a single fantasy book and dont generally enjoy the genre in any form, the show is basically political, its an extremely trashy fun political show, thats like the whole thing abt it, now go forth and troll with this superior knowledge

it's Shakespeare history play + Dynasty + dragons & ice zombies. It's okay if you don't like these things. I don't like the movies of child molester Woody Allen. To each their own.
― sarahell, Monday, 27 June 2016 21:41 (seven years ago) link
also accurate, that said, the clawed-hand way folks like that hold onto their takes basically means forget it folks, it's challopstown
― if young slothrop don't trust ya i'm gon' rhyme ya (slothroprhymes), Monday, 27 June 2016 21:43 (seven years ago) link
the movies of child molester Woody Allen are def bad (except many of the older ones)
― lag∞n, Monday, 27 June 2016 21:43 (seven years ago) link
they are all bad because he is a child molester and that means they are all about child molestation when u rly think about it.
― sarahell, Monday, 27 June 2016 21:44 (seven years ago) link
the show is fantasy through and through. it's very much in keeping with the genre. just admit you like fantasy!
― ryan, Monday, 27 June 2016 21:45 (seven years ago) link
thats very untrue and hardcore fantasy ppl r the first to say it thats even how i found out knowing nothing really abt the genre myself

xp - that was a particularly dull movie by a child molester. I prefer the movies of child molester Roman Polanski to those of child molester Woody Allen
― sarahell, Monday, 27 June 2016 21:49 (seven years ago) link
its true the movies of child molester Roman Polanski are superior to those of child molester Woody Allen
― lag∞n, Monday, 27 June 2016 21:50 (seven years ago) link
so glad we agree on the ranking of movies by child molesters!
do you think Sansa's gonna get together with Littlefinger and try for the Iron Throne?
― sarahell, Monday, 27 June 2016 21:52 (seven years ago) link
ya
― lag∞n, Monday, 27 June 2016 21:52 (seven years ago) link
polanski would be the superior pederast based on chinatown alone, throw repulsion in there and shit's like game over

xxp i don't think so - would kinda undo the agency she's finally developed to fall back into littlefinger's thrall

and maybe they could have called it sheffield and made it there
xpost
would argue the show is hardcore fantasy with sprinkle of medieval political intrigue for flavor and not vice versa.
― ryan, Monday, 27 June 2016 21:54 (seven years ago) link
the cinema of pederast Polanski decimates that of kiddie fiddler Allen like those dragons did the Slavers' fleet

ppl who know seem to say that most fantasy is abt good vs evil heroes who go on quests and so forth it is literally a fantastical version of humanity while also holding extreme fascination with the transcendent power of magic and fairies it is very escapist in nature, where this show everyone is just kinda petty and hopeless and very not heroic and the magical aspects operate on the same level as the human ones it is thought to be a self aware deconstruction of the genre casting escapist fantasies in a harsh cynical light, also grimm said its based on the war of the roses, another way to think abt it is cld u easily rewrite it to leave out all the magical stuff i think u p much cld, tho it wld be less interesting because of the way it comments on the genre
― lag∞n, Monday, 27 June 2016 22:03 (seven years ago) link
kiddie raper polanski's film 'the pianist' was probably better than anything underage quasi-incest merchant woody allen has made in decades.
― nomar, Monday, 27 June 2016 22:05 (seven years ago) link
fair enough! though deconstruction of genre still = genre. but yeah some of the strongest elements of it are those "critical" parts. but a lot of my favorite stuff that Martin has done here is very Arthurian and eschatological as well. It's a very interesting meld, really.
― ryan, Monday, 27 June 2016 22:06 (seven years ago) link
seems like it uses a lot of tools from the fantasy toolbox but for purposes that are pretty different from most fantasy
― call all destroyer, Monday, 27 June 2016 22:07 (seven years ago) link
idk if u deconstruct it... is it still... there, lol jk like ya obvs its fantasy but its pretty atypical, and its very political, also has a ton of action which i doesnt move me as much, also i didnt read the books which r prob more fantasy espcailly as far as the world building aspect
― lag∞n, Monday, 27 June 2016 22:09 (seven years ago) link
i did actually try to listen to the books on a drive across country and cldnt do it fwiw, so many boiled leather doublets
― lag∞n, Monday, 27 June 2016 22:10 (seven years ago) link
the stuff abt the history and culture and castles and economics and so forth was p tite but so many meals and exclaiming to wade through to get it
― lag∞n, Monday, 27 June 2016 22:11 (seven years ago) link
the big sticking point is that magic is real in this world. that's sort of the baseline criterion and it passes easily.
― ryan, Monday, 27 June 2016 22:11 (seven years ago) link
yeah a bunch about food, kinda like the movies of child molester woody allen.
― sarahell, Monday, 27 June 2016 22:12 (seven years ago) link
imagine having to eat a meal with child molester woody allen he is so gross i bet his chewing is hella loud
