I get that it's meant as an insult, but this is a medieval fantasy story with dragons and ice zombies, famous for it's scope and detail. I don't really feel bad for acting like Comic Book Guy around it. It's a nerdy thing, and nerding about it is actually a pretty fun thing. Nerding about the details on the maps, the long history of the show, the parallels with European history. Most of the time it really enriches the experience. This thing with Littlefinger was just crap, though, and I hope and expect that GRRM goes in a completely different direction.

Frederik B, Thursday, 23 June 2016 18:35 (seven years ago) link

i think it's p obvious to anyone here who watches the show/read the books that it's poorly written because grrm is not really a v good writer. but it's not poorly written because we don't know the logistics of lf moving around winterfell

dynamicinterface, Thursday, 23 June 2016 18:37 (seven years ago) link

Man, even Rob Bricken has a better handle on this than Fred does. That's . . . man oh man. Sad!

that gizmodo dude is otm because guys i already answered this --- sansa didn't tell jon because she wasn't sure they were coming, and they showed up at the last minute because that's what LF wanted

jason waterfalls (gbx), Thursday, 23 June 2016 18:48 (seven years ago) link

yeah and now Jon and Sansa have an army of ten wildings and Davos and a twelve year old girl and littlefinger has the best army in the north, with minimal casualties.

nomar, Thursday, 23 June 2016 18:50 (seven years ago) link

do we know that the 12 year old girl survived?

Say Something *NEW* about Rickon Stark (sarahell), Thursday, 23 June 2016 18:52 (seven years ago) link

All this debate is actually getting me more excited for the finale.

Robert Adam Gilmour, Thursday, 23 June 2016 18:53 (seven years ago) link

And unlike Stannis, who ALSO saved Jon from getting a good old-fashioned ass-whuppin', LF isn't about to charge off and get himself killed.

a 47-year-old chainsaw artist from South Carolina (Phil D.), Thursday, 23 June 2016 18:54 (seven years ago) link

Littlefinger does not command the armies of the Vale. Robin Arryn does.

Frederik B, Thursday, 23 June 2016 18:56 (seven years ago) link

He's the puppet master. What's the difference?

Evan, Thursday, 23 June 2016 18:57 (seven years ago) link

well, the only difference is that robin could do something rash that foils lf's plan

jason waterfalls (gbx), Thursday, 23 June 2016 18:58 (seven years ago) link

Sure, but as far as things are going at the moment, I'm not sure what point Fred is getting at.

Evan, Thursday, 23 June 2016 19:00 (seven years ago) link

That the Vale army has no loyalty to Littlefinger. He can't just use it whatever way he likes.

Frederik B, Thursday, 23 June 2016 19:04 (seven years ago) link

Oh, however will he find a way to manipulate the powerful 12-year-old Lord of the Vale into getting what he wants?

a 47-year-old chainsaw artist from South Carolina (Phil D.), Thursday, 23 June 2016 19:05 (seven years ago) link

As far as criticisms coming from folk who wouldn't pass highschool English goes, I have a degree in English and my criticism is strwightforward: sansa's actions do not match her characters motivation, which is in contradiction to everything about the show (which is about motives, aims, ambitions to some extent). If people want to say she 'just didn't' that's fine, if they want to say she didn't to help the show dramatically, that's fine. Bu if they want to claim that it matches her motivations they need to explain why.

inside, skeletons are always inside, that's obvious. (dowd), Thursday, 23 June 2016 19:09 (seven years ago) link

How did they know he would materialize correctly and suddenly take control of the entire song and dance? Too convenient.

xp to dowd.

Say Something *NEW* about Rickon Stark (sarahell), Thursday, 23 June 2016 19:15 (seven years ago) link

Manipulate Robin Arryn against his cousin Sansa Stark, who he also has a giant crush on? If that's Littlefingers plan, it's a horrible one.

Also, the books are actually translated to Danish, guys, and there's subtitles to the show. No need to pass an English high school course. It's a pretty ridiculous point to make. It's even more insane with this show, which is based on European history... I studied feudalism in high school, did you?

Frederik B, Thursday, 23 June 2016 19:17 (seven years ago) link

so wait, the heir to the iron throne, jon stark-targaryen, is going to marry his first cousin, sansa arryn-stark-lannister-bolton, the queen of the north, in time to defend westeros from his other first cousin (aunt?), danaerys targaryen-targaryen, and her dothraki and greyjoy sidekicks . . . and cousin/wife's ex-husband, tyrion? am i getting that right?

reggie (qualmsley), Thursday, 23 June 2016 19:19 (seven years ago) link

Oh, sorry, sarahell. Maybe overly defensive (about what? a minor plot point in a tv show!? Beats arguingabout the referendum, I guess).

inside, skeletons are always inside, that's obvious. (dowd), Thursday, 23 June 2016 19:20 (seven years ago) link

I thought LF's plan was to either marry Sansa or hand her head over to Cersei? Both plans would get him the north.

human and working on getting beer (longneck), Thursday, 23 June 2016 19:23 (seven years ago) link

sansa's actions do not match her characters motivation, which is in contradiction to everything about the show

I agree they haven't done an entirely convincing job with this but they have been setting up Sansa's distrust of Jon in nearly every scene they share this season. She has clearly been transformed by her experiences and rightly sees Jon as a Ned Stark Jr. who will stick to the old ways and get himself and everyone else killed. Her motivation was to be the one who defeated Ramsey and killed him. Jon was her tool for that job, but she needed a back-up.

Blowout Coombes (President Keyes), Thursday, 23 June 2016 19:46 (seven years ago) link

But even if she distrusts him, for this battle their interests are identical, I think. It's not to her benefit for Jon to lose here.

inside, skeletons are always inside, that's obvious. (dowd), Thursday, 23 June 2016 19:47 (seven years ago) link

her interest is in Jon not fucking things up by rejecting LF's help for reasons of honor.

Blowout Coombes (President Keyes), Thursday, 23 June 2016 19:50 (seven years ago) link

Anyway, giving up here. I'm still really enjoying the show and I hope it continues. Could do with more odd couple adventuring.

Frederik B - do you read the books in Danish and use the subtitles?

Robert Adam Gilmour, Thursday, 23 June 2016 20:15 (seven years ago) link

Can dowd and frederik read the gizmodo piece one more time plz before repeating their bad opinions thnx

Listen to my homeboy Fantano (D-40), Thursday, 23 June 2016 20:18 (seven years ago) link

Lol, the gizmodo piece is crap.

RAG, I mostly use subtitles, have read most of the book series in English. But are you fucking kidding me? Are you suggesting I can't discuss a show in English because I'm a foreigner?

Frederik B, Thursday, 23 June 2016 20:24 (seven years ago) link

have you guys figured out if this show is any good or not yet

Οὖτις, Thursday, 23 June 2016 20:40 (seven years ago) link

we figured out it was for nerds

Blowout Coombes (President Keyes), Thursday, 23 June 2016 20:48 (seven years ago) link

I think the verdict is the show was good until Littlefinger's army came from the wrong direction. That was its shark jump.

Blowout Coombes (President Keyes), Thursday, 23 June 2016 20:49 (seven years ago) link

who knew Sean Bean could play a shark so convincingly

Οὖτις, Thursday, 23 June 2016 20:51 (seven years ago) link

There's just no plausible explanation worth listening to! However, there are many plausible explanations.

Evan, Thursday, 23 June 2016 20:52 (seven years ago) link

mine are always the best but I get there too soon and then my excellent ideas get buried in the now showing X of N messages bar

El Tomboto, Thursday, 23 June 2016 21:08 (seven years ago) link

lf would never do such a thing.

― Frederik B, Thursday, 23 June 2016 21:24

I'd never do that. I'm not making plot arguments (I haven't discussed Sansa's choice), I wasn't questioning your ability to comprehend, I was just curious since you do a lot of reading and watching of things I'd presume are only available in English. I was just surprised that you might read it in Danish.

Robert Adam Gilmour, Thursday, 23 June 2016 21:21 (seven years ago) link

Just imo, you can't discuss the show bc you're a foreigner

Listen to my homeboy Fantano (D-40), Thursday, 23 June 2016 21:28 (seven years ago) link

I heard the books are best read in their original English, then translated to Danish, then back to English. That's what they're basing the teleplays on.

I'm gonna go ahead and list my finale predictions here

1. cersei sets off the wildfire under kings landing after her trial, just in time for jaime to see it returning home from rivverrun (ie he killed his king to avoid this, only to have his sister do it 20 years later)

2. varys shows up in dorne

3. littlefinger is creepy but then sansa threatens to kill littlefinger since technically dumb jon arryn is ruler of the vale and she can have his allegiance with or without baelish

4. the brotherhood without banners, plus hound, run into brienne and podrick and they all agree to head north together and not kill each other

5. tommen dies and margaery escapes kings landing, somehow

6. sam and gilly get to the citadel

7. daenarys & co. get on some ships finally

8. davos says some cold shit to melisandre

Totally not sure of my confidence level in the Tower of Joy greenseer revelation with Bran though. That seems like something they'll save for next season, to me. So I guess:

9. Bran does not greensee Jon's provenance at the Tower of Joy

El Tomboto, Monday, 27 June 2016 00:57 (seven years ago) link

Yeah I have a sneaking feeling bran may not appear in this last ep at all.
