I was in Spain in ... summer 1993? Anyway, there was some ad for Candy Dulfer's album that was played on the radio, or TV, again and again. Kept hearing "Sax ... a go-go ... sax ... a go-go ..." She was great on his 2004 tour.

i had a dream last night that prince came to a party i was throwing at a cheese shop because he heard i was a fan and he brought a bunch of new music and we all had a great time but then he got offended when he overheard me not loving his acting chops and after a sleepover with everyone in the cheese store, he left in a huff and I was freaking out and apologizing but Jerome stopped me from running after him and when i was screaming WHY? WHY? Jerome said,"because you were love hating" and then i woke up. it was upsetting.

this isnt bad actually. prince in sort of industrial techno mode.

StillAdvance, Tuesday, 21 June 2016 14:51 (seven years ago) link

like, you could kind of imagine him doing a decent score with this.

StillAdvance, Tuesday, 21 June 2016 14:52 (seven years ago) link

Not my intention, but I understand if it's taken the wrong way.

But I was really looking forward to his Joni tribute after.... you know.

pplains, Tuesday, 21 June 2016 15:54 (seven years ago) link

^ me too. i can't believe she outlived him

flappy bird, Tuesday, 21 June 2016 17:02 (seven years ago) link

Quite an interview with Judith Hill in the NYT today. Seems she was on the plane with him when they had to emergency land, and was the one who saw him pass out suddenly.

nice to know prince was listening to betty davis.
never knew he was into photography (actually his death has shown me how little i knew about him, compared to other artists, whose non-music pursuits you know much more about)
i didnt realise he was still that close to kirk johnson either.

StillAdvance, Wednesday, 22 June 2016 11:53 (seven years ago) link

At this point never surprised at anything I learn about the guy.

One thing I keep thinking about is John L. Nelson. Clearly he had some of the gift his son had but it didn't seem to rise all the way to the surface. Is it just because we've never heard it, because of external forces or because, as Doug Yule said of Lou Reed, he had "an imperfect instrument"?

Poe, I know all about Ulalume (James Redd and the Blecchs), Wednesday, 22 June 2016 12:39 (seven years ago) link

prince looks really like his father. not sure what you mean about not rising all the way to the surface. just seems like a joe jackson sort of thing. father who was a working musician, for a while at least, but didnt 'make it', not big anyway. not sure if john wanted prince to make it as he didnt, like what joe wanted for his sons though. ive no idea if he encouraged prince to play. from what i know, he actually stopped prince from playing the piano that was in their house. and i dont know if john was good or not (apart from him writing the bridge on computer blue).

StillAdvance, Wednesday, 22 June 2016 12:44 (seven years ago) link

Right, Joe Jackson or Murry Wilson even.

Maybe I meant he had some impulse to create and some amount of talent but not the ability or circumstance to develop it properly.

The Judith hill article made me think specifically for the first time about how Prince didn't just have a close call on that plane but a full blown nde

In re to the last paragraph of the piece

Speaking of which, I always feel like the appearance of the surprising/ jarring chord with the minor second (between the minor and major third) in "Sometimes It Snows In April" evokes a soul flying past as it leaves the body, or circles back to earth for one last look.

Did Prince's dad not release any recordings ?...always imagined him releasing some Private Press records in the Minneapolis locale...

X-Prince Protégé (sonnyboy), Wednesday, 22 June 2016 13:42 (seven years ago) link

I think he made tapes and would send them out to people, maybe as gifts on holidays, to some of the people he met that had been Paisley Park employees.

Really, what fraction of his talent did his dad have is what I would like to know, if that is a valid question.

"Really, what fraction of his talent did his dad have is what I would like to know"

why?

his dad played with him at some aftershows. maybe if you can find those, you might hear how good he was.

that fathers song release does not look too promising.

3 passengers on a private jet. Nice enviro footprint, Prince.

nice to know prince was listening to betty davis.

yeah not too surprising given the Larry Graham + Miles connections

Οὖτις, Wednesday, 22 June 2016 15:42 (seven years ago) link

sometimes i think as he got into his 40s all he listened to was sly, p-funk, and 70s soul stuff (ie things he would have played in his teens, his comfort music), so nice to know he still had his ears open.

StillAdvance, Wednesday, 22 June 2016 16:03 (seven years ago) link

kinda cool tour of prince's MPLS -

betty davis is good -- her resurgence in recent years led to some hyperbolic accolades, but she's still good.

"Betty Davis also not very good"

"to ... other 70s soul stuff? idgi"

lol but still not the usual stuff. shes more out there.

StillAdvance, Wednesday, 22 June 2016 16:19 (seven years ago) link

actually, i often get confused by what princes faith did and didnt allow. cos you would think he would be listening strictly to gospel or something in his last decade or so. not betty davis. and he shouldnt surely have been making sexual innuendo as he still sometimes did. and yet, when he did in his later years, it just seemed rote, and mechanical, rather than genuinely amorous. i think this is why i liked the rainbow children album best. it seemed more honest. more authentic. and in a way, while i know a lot of of (corny/old) fans were like 'what?! no darling nikki?!', i kinda wish he did just have a full on gospel/christian/JW period. like how little richard did or al green did. it would have been better. plus, i just like gospel/god fearing music.

StillAdvance, Wednesday, 22 June 2016 16:25 (seven years ago) link

agree he didn't seem too committed to his latter-day licentious moments. I would've been fine with wacked out gospel subject matter, it's the sound of Rainbow Children I didn't like

my fantasy of an album of 12 variations on his PR b-side god fills me with great pleasure

‘It’s only by God’s grace that I’m even here. I had to fight for my life. I remember hearing your voices from afar and saying to myself, “Follow the voices, follow the voices, get back in your body, you gotta to do this.” And he said it was the hardest thing he’d ever done, to get back into his body like that.

ive only seen the sheila e performance so not sure if there were others on the BET Awards, but this was SO good. never even knew she played guitar, but she gets funky. typical melody stuff, so just the climactic parts of his funkiest songs (no beautiful night though), and some of sheila's own songs that prince wrote. shes not an exhibitionist/show-woman like prince, but how can you not love a woman who does THIS much in 8 mins? (plus, she still looks incredible)

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pXUaCGJnlmA

this only a bit of it. the full thing i saw only on facebook on the purplestream page.

just saw that bilal and badu did something too.

cant wait to watch it but will have to wait til after work - cant be getting emotional right now.

StillAdvance, Monday, 27 June 2016 10:55 (seven years ago) link

all the tributes were great

maura, Monday, 27 June 2016 13:38 (seven years ago) link

but sheila e's was the best, with janelle and maxwell a close second

maura, Monday, 27 June 2016 13:38 (seven years ago) link

So Sheila E. went long because D'Angelo backed out.

Anyway. She killed it, as well she would. It seems of all his collaborators and musicians, Prince remained closest to Sheila E. the longest.

Josh in Chicago, Monday, 27 June 2016 15:51 (seven years ago) link

cant imagine dangelo would have been that good, nor able to hold it together.

she was incredible anyway.

i cant wait to see bilal's performance. more than dangelo, he has the right voice/range to do prince justice. only maxwell i think is in the same league.

StillAdvance, Monday, 27 June 2016 15:59 (seven years ago) link

d'angelo held it together just fine on that Sometimes It Snows in April tribute. have you seen his live shows? it's straight out of the Prince playbook.

bilal killed it though.

u mad

Οὖτις, Monday, 27 June 2016 19:44 (seven years ago) link

im a big dangelo fan too and thought the same.

i know his shows are cribbed heavily from prince, but thats also why i dont really rate him quite as highly as some do (the jam he adds onto lady on the voodoo tour for example is basically exactly what prince did for mutiny on the 1986 tour). obv prince borrowed a lot too but i never get the sense dangelo really 'owns' the stuff he borrows. hes too respectful.

StillAdvance, Monday, 27 June 2016 21:32 (seven years ago) link

still not seen the stevie, jennifer hudson, or janelle monae ones, but bilal killed it, though he could have held on to the mic a bit better and kept his shirt on. sheila e was just amazing though. love her.
