Re the Sam and Dave, there's another amazing live version of that I'll try to find later, where Sam comes in in the middle of Dave's verse with this tremendously sung "Whoa-oa-oah sing a song Dave!" and the audience goes nuts. I think they were nearly on par with Otis Redding as singers and performers but maybe didn't quite get as good material and also had the slight noveltyishness of being a male duo.
