How was Arya able to finally defeat waif if she'd been getting her arse kicked so badly by her all the other times previous?

cause they fought in the dark this time! in which arya had the advantage from all that time not being able to see

That line of succession stuff is interesting but the show hasn't done any work setting up that scenario. I think its far more likely, if Tommen does die, that we'll find out that Margery is pregnant. We did recently see her talk with the High Sparrow about an heir.

― Blowout Coombes (President Keyes), Tuesday, June 14, 2016 4:54 AM (6 hours ago)

And that line of succession post was written before Tommen kicked Jaime out of the Kingsguard ... so he would, in fact, be next in line. Still, even if she is "pregnant" someone would have to rule in the meantime.

the word "game" the title refers to the various characters and their incessant striving for power - not a game in the traditional sense eg chess/tennis but akin to a game in that they are "competing" against each other to rule. a much more serious game when you think of it this way.

Wittgenstein Has A Lot To Teach Us About Game of Thrones, and Here's Why

The British always referred to their wars in Afghanistan as 'The Great Game' or at least in the 19th century.

Stevolende, Tuesday, 14 June 2016 20:52 (seven years ago) link

strictly speaking it should be called:

"game" of chairs

this would make it clear it's not an actual game and that a throne is a chair.

I think at this point it's obvious the makers of the show don't really want it to be "clear" per se

It's amazing that it was commissioned and produced and maintains a strong viewership really, being as it is a series of near-random weekly vignettes featuring photogenic actors interacting in ways nobody quite understands

life can be strange, sometimes

apropos of nothing, i just need to celebrate Arya finally getting out of bravos (hopefully)

like, i remember at first this storyline seemed interesting & jacqen was mysterious & ooh yay more training for arya soon she will be a great ninja & then a HUNDRED EPISODES LATER turns out she's trapped in some daffy duck "ho haha guard turn parry dodge spin thrust BONK" nightmare for eternity

and that dullfaced girl was the worst

if they had killed her in that place i would have burned something down, i swear

I quite liked the Waif in a way. I thought Bravos was a really good looking setting.

seemed like a rough job, she did a meryn trant job on her eyes. none of that 'restful slumber' look everyone else has.

i have it on word that due to budget constraints the scenes of arya training on the faceless men's cold cuts slicer were not shot

Evan, Wednesday, 15 June 2016 16:11 (seven years ago) link

I've not seen much fully-blown sociopathy from him lately, other than the fact that he's leading an army and in that context you do have to kill people occasionally. There are probably like 15-20 bigger sociopaths in the show.

lag∞n, Wednesday, 15 June 2016 17:46 (seven years ago) link

brienne is such a great character to play off against jaime since you get the sense that he thinks of himself as an honorable guy and his 'kingslayer' moniker came from a moment when he was trying to save a city. and brienne is afaict the only other person who believes jaime is a decent guy and encourages his sense of honor, vs cersei telling him it's them against the world and let's kill everyone else.

Did anyone else feel like that goodbye scene with Varys might have been his last scene? It had last-scene-style music, and had him sort-of walking into the distance...

schwantz, Wednesday, 15 June 2016 18:17 (seven years ago) link

i was thinking that it felt like a goodbye but it felt too obviously like a goodbye for it to be one. i could be wrong. i recall hearing about something from a kevan lannister chapter in one of the books that makes me wonder where varys is off to, and what his actual mission might be. that's probably another book story that's long gone though.

nomar, Wednesday, 15 June 2016 18:22 (seven years ago) link

I really like the idea of Varys going to Dorne. Ellaria and Tyrion have a cordial relationship, and the Dornish are anti-slavery.
