noon-6 this Saturday

Join us for the NY Punk Rock/ Heavy Metal Flea Market at the Queens Museum in celebration of the exhibition "Hey! Ho! Let's Go: Ramones and the Birth of Punk".

Since its debut in the summer of 2014, the New York Punk Rock Heavy Metal Flea Market has hosted a curated selection of vendors, artists, and craftsmen in a variety of local venues. The market offers oddities, collectibles, apparel, jewelry, accessories, handmade goods, vintage items, rare vinyl, and more.

DJ sets, book talks, and film screenings will run throughout the event, with a finale performance by Rockaway Bitch, an all female Ramones cover band.

It hadn't really occurred to me until seeing tonight's crowd roaming the streets that Dolly Parton is some kind of gay icon, although it seems headsmackingly obvious now.

Went to the memorial last night. Flowers and notes outside.

You can see on their FB page, although I am assuming most of you didn't know the guy.

Anyway I was always happy to see the guy and always enjoyed talking to him.

Worth seeing if I'm visiting up there before it closes July 31?

curmudgeon, Thursday, 14 July 2016 18:10 (seven years ago) link

Please let a James Redd know when you are visiting and I can try to go with you.

Gabba Gabba Hey in the Hayloft (James Redd and the Blecchs), Thursday, 14 July 2016 18:15 (seven years ago) link

Will do, leaning towards traveling there Thurs July 28 and heading home Sun July 31. Gotta decide where to stay hotel-wise

curmudgeon, Friday, 15 July 2016 15:12 (seven years ago) link

We were just there for the Children's Book Festival but I was not able to see the Ramones stuff b/c little kids ran out of steam too early. Really love that museum now though, just the space and the light and the view of the unisphere, really nice place to be.

Louis CK tonight at the tennis stadium. Never really seen comedy in that kind of setting so wondering what it will be like.

welp looks like im missing the Ramones thing

helpless before THRILLARY (Dr Morbius), Friday, 22 July 2016 18:20 (seven years ago) link

There was one of those quiet clubbing events going on at hunters point park last night. Pretty amusing to see

calstars, Monday, 25 July 2016 11:57 (seven years ago) link

Was just at the museum again but did not see the Ramones thing again. There turned out to be Colombian folk dancing and my 4-year-old was totally mesmerized and wanted to watch it the entire time we were there. TBH I'm not the biggest Ramones fan so it's no big disappointment for me.

Louis CK was amazingly good btw and I really like the Tennis Stadium as a venue, not to mention how nice it is to have it ten minutes walk from my place.

Was just saying in the MTA thread that we find it so difficult to eat well in the Glendale area, because when I search for restaurants the reviews are vastly over-enthusiastic for what we find when we go out. (lol review inflation and "Forest Hills good" otm.)

Complicated by my gluten and dairy issues so German/Bavarian/Polish/etc foods and beer are all pretty much a complete wash for me.

In all but winter weather, we tend to take scooter trips out of the area and have favorite spots around Bk and Queens, but if we want to grab something near his place we usually just buy ingreds at Valentino's on Fresh Pond Rd and make meals at home.

Valentino's is basically magic btw.

hmm, need to try

socka flocka-jones (man alive), Monday, 25 July 2016 15:01 (seven years ago) link

I need better Chinese and/or Thai take-out. Ridgewood Thai is laughable and that's when they even bother to ANSWER THE PHONE. And Delicious Wok is barely mediocre and don't have a very wide range of options. I will literally buy snow peas in Bensonhurst from the Chinese grocery and carry them all the fucking way to Ridgewood to combine with their roast pork or w/e.

One place I honestly always enjoy although it's sort of a mini-chain is Bareburger on Austin, and they definitely offer a lot for people with gluten and dairy issues, including sprout buns. It's pleasant atmosphere and the food is good. Although probably I give it extra cred because it's the easiest place in the area to go with small kids.

socka flocka-jones (man alive), Monday, 25 July 2016 15:02 (seven years ago) link

Best immediate area Thai I've had is Bangkok Cuisine right off Austin -- can't say whether it's worth the scooter ride for takeout, but it's probably the best delivery option in our Seamless range.

socka flocka-jones (man alive), Monday, 25 July 2016 15:03 (seven years ago) link

Valentino's has great loss-leader pricing, you have to buy what's on sale to some degree. But some weeks it's like baby asparagus for 1.99 and cheap giant restaurant bags of already washed spinach, for when you want to sautee it and it wilts down to nothing. And don't sleep on their deli counter either--the best thing I've maybe ever had was sliced smoked pork butt, and we've been waiting for them to get it back in for like two months.

He lives on the border between Ridgewood and Glendale yeah so all those Forest Hills places are kind of a haul.

We have friends in that area who swear by Ltauha, have you ever been?

socka flocka-jones (man alive), Monday, 25 July 2016 15:07 (seven years ago) link

I think we went once and it was underwhelming iirc. I have a vague memory of my pork belly or w/e being all dried out but maybe we were late for brunch or it was a weekday or something and we should try at a more peak hour.

Dang. Everything turns out to be underwhelming :/

I was walking around Ridgewood a few weeks ago while waiting for my car to be inspected and happened on Milk & Pull, which may be the area's first true Brooklynesque coffee place. Also happened upon a really nice cooperative used bookstore-cafe whose name escapes me.

socka flocka-jones (man alive), Monday, 25 July 2016 15:14 (seven years ago) link

Making me glad I live in Woodside and not Ridgewood though I've debated the switch. My Thai options (and Tibetan/Nepali) are off the hook.

dan selzer, Monday, 25 July 2016 15:16 (seven years ago) link

Sheeeit. I'd probably eat takeout every night.

socka flocka-jones (man alive), Monday, 25 July 2016 15:17 (seven years ago) link

responding from the MTA thread--

the finback brewery is a fun place and i've seen tons of kids there, it's very spacious with lots of board games and stuff lying around.

my wife went to zum stammtisch with her folks and said it was a trip. i like gottscheer hall in ridgewood for germanic kitsch. great pretzels, very cheap beer.

i think the woodside/jackson heights/elmhurst corridor is probably some of the most concentrated good eating in the country if not the world

adam, Monday, 25 July 2016 15:33 (seven years ago) link

Is Finback offering any food at this point?

socka flocka-jones (man alive), Monday, 25 July 2016 15:34 (seven years ago) link

bags of chips iirc

adam, Monday, 25 July 2016 15:47 (seven years ago) link

Corrato II Pizza on Myrtle does a gluten-free crust iirc that is pretty good tho disproportionately expensive for a pizza. We've taken to making our own pizza but I would try theirs again. I don't think their other location offers it, unfortunately.

Sent you an email James Redd re visiting Ramones exhibit

curmudgeon, Monday, 25 July 2016 16:58 (seven years ago) link

Ah, yes. Got it earlier thanks. Will reply later.

The Professor of Hard Rain (James Redd and the Blecchs), Monday, 25 July 2016 17:29 (seven years ago) link

So I saw the Ramones exhibit last Friday-- old cool flyers plus bland later ones; Dee Dee's terrible high school report card; photos and artwork by the folks associated with them; tvs with Ramones videos on them plus a room showing the 1976 (or 77 or?) concert from London that became the Ramones first live album. I enjoyed it although it wasn't super comprehensive. Fun and entertaining enough.

We also saw the Bearing Witness: William Gropper drawings exhibit. Nice left-wing stuff from around the 1930s to the '60s. Plus the giant Panorama scale model of NYC. Then we went and saw the Unisphere and on to Citi Filed to see the Mets lose to the Rockies.

In Flushing we had tasty Muslim Lamb Chops at Chinese restaurant Fu Ran and we also got Indian food at Dosa Hutt.

Saturday was back to Manhattan and then out to Brooklyn

curmudgeon, Tuesday, 2 August 2016 04:12 (seven years ago) link

One of these years will meet up w you NYC ilxors....

curmudgeon, Tuesday, 2 August 2016 16:32 (seven years ago) link

Sounds like you did all the right things. If you're ever in the area again you could do Mexican at Nixtamal. I'm a big fan of those muslim lamb chops at Fu Run though. Incidentally I used to love a place in Jersey City that was also called Dosa Hut, although I doubt they're connected.

plz save me a click and tell me what the quote is for cheapest rental

The Hon. J. Piedmont Mumblethunder (Dr Morbius), Wednesday, 3 August 2016 14:41 (seven years ago) link

The Times always quotes the top of the market for some reason -- either to please their real estate industry advertisers or on some presumption that there's a certain class of apartment their aspirational readers wouldn't even consider worthy.

Ate dinner at Mustang Thakali in JH and it was just great.

Then ate brunch at Alobar and it was pretty good -- typical but above-average brunch fair and VERY good with kids (lots of space).

socka flocka-jones (man alive), Monday, 8 August 2016 15:19 (seven years ago) link

do you think i could get a studio in FH next spring for $1300/mo?

The Hon. J. Piedmont Mumblethunder (Dr Morbius), Monday, 8 August 2016 15:35 (seven years ago) link

Hmm, that's on the low end but maybe not out of the question. I see a decent number of studios listed for 1400-1600, and maybe you can negotiate on rent a little. This one is $1350
