how does this compare to the black cilice record from last year

imago, Monday, 13 June 2016 03:04 (seven years ago) link

More weird keyboards, more complex but somehow less coherent riffing, vocals don't sound like an angry fog bank

While you may want to avoid any conversation that doesn't strictly involve music, the NWN! forum is where I go to learn about all the weird black and death metal that otherwise would slip through the cracks.

Devilock, Tuesday, 14 June 2016 20:40 (seven years ago) link

I'm listening to an album by Manierisme right now 'cos they're related to the above Japanese weirdness, some of it sounds like lofi blackened JRPG themes (I mean that in a good way).

ultros ultros-ghali, Tuesday, 14 June 2016 21:15 (seven years ago) link

Oh and on a 'still weird but less questionable' tip I finally got round to hearing the massive Black Twilight Circle comp Tliltic Tlapoyauak which is two hours of brilliance

ultros ultros-ghali, Tuesday, 14 June 2016 21:20 (seven years ago) link

I slept on that Black Twilight stuff for a long time but have recently gotten into Volahn and Arizmenda, both kind of amazing.

Robert Adam Gilmour, Thursday, 16 June 2016 21:34 (seven years ago) link

Cool!

I think it's been discussed on the main metal thread but this Desert Dances and Serpent Sermons 4-way split on Ajna Offensive is fucking great. Four Black Twilight Circle bands playing black metal but I hear moments that remind of of the stereotypical Morricone Western soundtrack, Popol Vuh and weird European prog/psych. I think it's the best production any of those bands have had to date, too.

three weeks pass...

New Arizmenda tape, Beneath This Reality of Flesh, highly recommended for fans of Les Legions Noires, Lust (Canada), orthodox black metal laced with weirdness and smashed onto a cheap old cassette.

xpost - Where did you find it? Only 50 made and it's not listed on Crepusculo Negro. Thanks.

Nécropole's first 2 demo tapes are now on cd via Northern Heritage. Essential!

Yelploaf, Thursday, 14 July 2016 00:36 (seven years ago) link

xp I illegally downloaded it, actually (from M0rtuusInS0mn1s) - Arizmenda's Facebook had a link to the Bandcamp page but that appears to be gone and until I can pay for that or a physical copy... well, stealing it is.

one month passes...

Find it odd how deeply Mortiis into all the typical black metal fantasy and dungeon music but it seems unlikely he'd ever return to that. Of course lots of people change interests but it's just difficult for me to imagine how you'd leave in some cases.

I do enjoy both periods of his work, though I've never totally loved any of his 3 albums I got. Still amuses me how un-kvlt it is in "Parasite God" when he goes "hmmm-mmm-hmmm-mmm baby"

I'm currently obsessed with "Winter Howl" on the first Forest album. 20 minutes of meandering, clean guitars, sparse drums and distant, anguished vocals - not far off The Dead C's more plaintive moments. Can anyone identify other bands or songs that mine similar territory? Some of the weirder LLN stuff comes close, and maybe Circle of Ouroborus.

Yelploaf, Friday, 14 October 2016 17:08 (seven years ago) link

Urfaust?

Siegbran, Friday, 14 October 2016 17:11 (seven years ago) link

Haha, yes Urfaust is on the nose.

Yelploaf, Friday, 14 October 2016 17:14 (seven years ago) link

Anyone else heard the new Darkthrone yet? Bit disappointed tbh. It sounds so 'clean', production wise. Made me put on Xasthur and Lurker of Chalice for ~trve black metal feels~

the tightening is plateauing (Le Bateau Ivre), Friday, 14 October 2016 20:00 (seven years ago) link

I love Darkthrone's "production" lately. I wouldn't call it clean or dirty, it's just an honest plug-in-and-play sound.

punksishippies, Friday, 14 October 2016 22:41 (seven years ago) link

I love the new Darkthrone, reaches back to Panzerfaust which is just fine with me. Still sounds dank enough to my ears.

I'm currently obsessed with "Winter Howl" on the first Forest album. 20 minutes of meandering, clean guitars, sparse drums and distant, anguished vocals

I'll have to think about it, but just wanted to say how much I love this track - used to play this on my radio show next to Krautrock, NZ noise, whatever, it's like ur-music.

Lawsonomy Domine (GOTT PUNCH II HAWKWINDZ), Monday, 17 October 2016 04:50 (seven years ago) link

Ay you know who doesn't get enough props? Carpathian Forest.

"used to play this on my radio show next to Krautrock, NZ noise, whatever, it's like ur-music."

I would love to hear your show! Is it archived anywhere? I made a playlist and drew a bath, hit the bong and sunk in. Dead C's "Outside" segued perfectly into "Winter Howl." I almost drowned.

Yelploaf, Monday, 24 October 2016 20:14 (seven years ago) link

Sadly, no. Can't even find the playlists anymore. It's erased from history! But thanks!

Lawsonomy Domine (GOTT PUNCH II HAWKWINDZ), Monday, 24 October 2016 20:29 (seven years ago) link

I never got around to checking out anything in between Carpathian Forest's first and last releases, but I do love both Black Shining Leather and Fuck You All. They're the unhappiest black metal party band. I can never play "Every Day I Must Suffer" loudly enough -- that bluesy riff!

Devilock, Tuesday, 25 October 2016 19:27 (seven years ago) link

meant to stick a "xxpost" in there

Devilock, Tuesday, 25 October 2016 19:27 (seven years ago) link

I kinda wish they stayed "serious." Their first EP and about half the stuff on Black Shining Leather seemed to promise something a little more interesting than a jokey party band with leftover Celtic Frost riffs.

Nattefrost made a better black metal GG Allin than that attention whore from Shining, anyway

punksishippies, Tuesday, 25 October 2016 21:34 (seven years ago) link

yeah, "The Swordsmen" and "The Northern Hemisphere" are pretty amazing. Never dipped into the Nattefrost drug soup though.

otoh, SHUT UP THERE'S NO EXCUSE TO LIIIIIIIIVE

Devilock, Tuesday, 25 October 2016 22:01 (seven years ago) link

Carptathian Forest's "Journey Through the Cold Moors of Svarttjern" definitely fits in the vein of blackened, shrieky post-rock. Sounds like Royal Trux, Pink Reason, Bardo Pond etc.

Has anyone here read WOLVES AMONG SHEEP: HISTORY AND IDEOLOGY OF NATIONAL SOCIALIST BLACK METAL?

Don't know why I have such a strong interest in NSBM. I certainly don't hold those views but I always love art from polarized stances.

Please offer some non-Nazi examples of "art from polarized stances" that you love.

Tragedy Khadafi, Paris, Public Enemy, X Clan, Dead Prez... are a few on the rap side.

I'm currently listening to Jihadi Nasheeds which are quite beautiful and, problematically, the soundtrack to many violent ISIS videos.

Yelploaf, Tuesday, 1 November 2016 17:34 (seven years ago) link

plus a bunch of noise/power electronics that celebrates sexual violence: Grunt, Whitehouse, Taint, Macronympha, Atrax Morgue.

Again, not an advocate in the least of these positions but I believe all is fair in art.

i guess in particular what parallels do you draw between, for example, bikini kill and huggy bear and burzum?

blonde redheads have more fun (upper mississippi sh@kedown), Tuesday, 1 November 2016 18:23 (seven years ago) link

Good question, and one that I feared I'd not answer well. Bikini Kill and Huggy Bear are overtly anti-patriarchy, pro-feminist (which I do support) while Burzum seemingly comes from a place of potent emotion that's hard to locate without knowledge of his views outside music. Bikini Kill's "Feels Blind" immediately states it's intent. Huggy Bear's "Dissthenic Penetration" is more oblique but equally direct, and any Burzum song about Nordic blood seeping into the forest floor is obviously more inscrutable. Still, I love them all.

Yelploaf, Tuesday, 1 November 2016 18:38 (seven years ago) link

So...do you listen to music exclusively for philosophical reasons? Or do you ever just listen to music as sound that's been organized into patterns you find aesthetically pleasing?

Don Van Gorp, midwest regional VP, marketing (誤訳侮辱), Tuesday, 1 November 2016 18:39 (seven years ago) link

I suppose the latter though I can't help but follow or read lyrics if they're in English.

Yelploaf, Tuesday, 1 November 2016 18:44 (seven years ago) link

"potent emotion"

that's what they call it now?
