xp incidentally, before i searched for that piece, I didn't know CJ liked the song. Unflattering or not, it's a killer jam; I woulda been hyped about it too.

Haha I am going to a friends to watch graffiti bridge tonight, as it happens

scarcity festival (Jon not Jon), Thursday, 9 June 2016 19:57 (seven years ago) link

it actually has some creepy prince moments, which i was not aware was possible but there's a sequence when prince takes the unconscious aura and sorta tries to peek at her breasts
also prince's chest hair is shaved into a heart with words in the middle that say "beat me"
it's a weird fucking movie

De La Soul is no Major Lazer (ulysses), Thursday, 9 June 2016 20:03 (seven years ago) link

i mean the crux of the story is that morris day is the tough guy pimp. he is not very frightening.

all the songs are truncated. you are likely better off listening to the album.

or maybe just watch his deathless ode to premature ejaculation, "tick tick bang" which is more or less the high point

Odd that Cindy Crawford didn't do "Cindy C", he wrote her a song for crissakes! Honor that!

I assume she maybe doesn't dig being portrayed as a whore...?

my favorite part of Graffiti Bridge is the soundstage the bridge is on

The "Mountains" video is fun though.

it's weird to think how differently things would've been if Prince DID have success in film after Purple Rain. like would he have just become Elvis, doing an endless series of goofy musicals? would he have transitioned into dramatic roles and, like, played the Jeff Goldblum part in Jurassic Park or something?

Dierks Bentley's Holistic Detective Agency (some dude), Friday, 10 June 2016 00:36 (seven years ago) link

Would like to contemplate this, but can't stop thinking about Leiber & Stoller getting frozen out as songwriters for Elvis by Colonel Tom and the Aberbachs after recommending to the King that he stretch his acting chops by accepting the lead in a film of Nelson Algren's A Walk on the Wild Side.

Graffiti Bridge.

It is terrible, but in an interesting pre-verbal way. There's a lot of delightful clothes to look at. Prince's hair is really awful though, one of his few dud looks. I love the stagey compressed sets for Seven Corners and the Bridge. I have no idea what happened in several scenes of this movie.

scarcity festival (Jon not Jon), Friday, 10 June 2016 03:43 (seven years ago) link

GB is one of those films where, rather than stamp out bootlegs, prince should have dedicated his crack team of 'sharp female lawyers' to destroying all available copies and prints. all that should remain of that film is the soundtrack, and the poster, which i quite like.

StillAdvance, Friday, 10 June 2016 09:30 (seven years ago) link

the original early 80s rockabilly version of tick tick bang is better than the GB version for anyone who likes that one.

StillAdvance, Friday, 10 June 2016 09:30 (seven years ago) link

No it's not, I've heard both and I prefer the GB version.

glad thats settled then.

I love the Under the Cherry Moon and have never cared who know it. This is a great defense of it: http://notcoming.com/reviews/underthecherrymoon/

lol this is so true and was much remarked upon at our last rewatch. That terrible stubble goatee

i like UTCM too

that notcoming website has a really good layout.

tried watching cherry moon last night. i will try again a half dozen more times, I'm sure.
i like prince's graffiti bridge hair!

De La Soul is no Major Lazer (ulysses), Friday, 10 June 2016 15:44 (seven years ago) link

Bad hair. Good clothes though. I love this line in the Not Coming piece: "The film had the dubious honor of winning five Razzie awards, even tying with Howard the Duck for Worst Picture. But does Howard the Duck feature Prince, in a bathtub filled with rose petals, playing with a toy boat while wearing a hat? No."

So many highly enjoyable details in that movie. Great bit of backwards film in the "Girls and Boys" performance for instance.

aw I love prince's graffiti bridge hair. so lush. the facial hair is regrettable yes

who is extremely unqualified to review this pop album (BradNelson), Friday, 10 June 2016 16:03 (seven years ago) link

i watched it for the first time yesterday and I think the biggest sin against it is that it's kinda boring, which I can't say about under the cherry moon or purple rain

who is extremely unqualified to review this pop album (BradNelson), Friday, 10 June 2016 16:04 (seven years ago) link

a middle ground between purple rain (same plot essentially just with religious overtones) and sign o the times (exclusively filmed on soundstages plus great performances) should theoretically kinda rule but it just kinda dully meanders

who is extremely unqualified to review this pop album (BradNelson), Friday, 10 June 2016 16:06 (seven years ago) link

So, Sign o the Times isn't a legit concert film? (I haven't seen)

it's like 90% performances

Οὖτις, Friday, 10 June 2016 16:25 (seven years ago) link

iirc there's a couple backstage scene things? It's been over 15+ years since I've seen it (RIP VHS copy)

Οὖτις, Friday, 10 June 2016 16:26 (seven years ago) link

yeah there are a few stage interstitials that aren't... good or anything, but are fun, and i love the sets they built for it

who is extremely unqualified to review this pop album (BradNelson), Friday, 10 June 2016 16:32 (seven years ago) link

"it's like 90% performances"

shot iirc on the actual SOTT tour, then dubbed with audio re-recorded semi/quasi-live at paisley park. classic prince move. but brilliantly done. who can tell?

StillAdvance, Friday, 10 June 2016 16:36 (seven years ago) link

or was it all shot at PP, then dubbed later? not sure.

StillAdvance, Friday, 10 June 2016 16:36 (seven years ago) link

yeah I don't remember

Οὖτις, Friday, 10 June 2016 16:39 (seven years ago) link

there's a video wherein Dick Gregory theorizes that Prince was killed, but i have not watched so i will not link.

we can be heroes just for about 3.6 seconds (Dr Morbius), Friday, 10 June 2016 16:43 (seven years ago) link

According to Eric Leeds in the Per Nilsen book ("DanceMusicSexRomance") around 80% was reshot at Paisley Park because the actual concert footage shot for the film in Europe turned out too grainy. Pretty amazing.

Acid Hose (Capitaine Jay Vee), Friday, 10 June 2016 16:43 (seven years ago) link

DG is deeply conspiratorial and quite inconsistent

'they wanted him dead cos he owned his masters...'
'wait...'
'who said he really owned his masters when he died?'

etc

StillAdvance, Friday, 10 June 2016 16:44 (seven years ago) link

In terms of his look and his moves and even his affect sort of, I feel like p in graffiti bridge is the closest he ever got to MJ-ness. It's weird and doesn't work for me.

Morris is pretty flat in graffiti bridge, but I did lol mightily at:

"WHAT is your main problem?!"

and

"I miss those back rubs..."

The bit where Morris and Jerome are grossed out by having accidentally made out is car crash fascinating -- directorial Prince drags that pause out so fucking long it's insane

scarcity festival (Jon not Jon), Friday, 10 June 2016 16:54 (seven years ago) link

i liked the bit where jerome lays the woman's coat on the ground so morris doesnt have to walk in a puddle lol

StillAdvance, Friday, 10 June 2016 17:02 (seven years ago) link

Oh that was good. That was early in the film and got my hopes up that Morris and Jerome would bring it.

this is very true. if Prince was ever gonna give a song to MJ, I can see "Thieves In The Temple" being it.

i loved that video back in the day. Tevin Campbell, where are you now? (j/k i know where he is, don't tell me)
