isn't the candy-in-haute-cuisine-even-savory kinda old hat by now?

gabbneb, Monday, 29 September 2008 05:20 (fifteen years ago) link

Tehresa, I suggest Han Ah Reum in Woodside, near Roosevelt Avenue and 61st St. It's part of a Korean grocery store chain, and you can buy produce to cook up, or just get prepared stuff like kimchi rolls.

marshmallows in soup is kind of blowing my mind.

there were just a few, clustered in the center. they were dusted with something, maybe nutmeg. i expected them to be, i don't know, fancy croutons or something. but they were really good with the soup.

marshmallows and starchy autumnal foodstuffs go great together (cf. also sweet potatoes)

donna rouge, Monday, 29 September 2008 05:47 (fifteen years ago) link

I am particularly fond of marshmallows in casserole dishes, usually of the Jello variety.

yeah i think aquavit is somewhat from that wave, adapted for scandinavian purposes. not that there was a lot of trickery, just a few touches here and there. the soup would have been delicious without the marshmallows, but they did give it a sort of kick.

xp: yeah it very much seemed like a nod to sweet-potato casserole type things. which i'm an unapologetic glutton for.

tipsy mothra, Monday, 29 September 2008 05:51 (fifteen years ago) link

Yeah I was thinking about thanksgiving yams etc. I think it's that having them in soup makes me think of hot chocolate and my brain is having a weird time of it all.

highly theoretical, of course. (tehresa), Monday, 29 September 2008 05:53 (fifteen years ago) link

Also I was never into the marshmallow yam casserole so I think I'd rather just have a lovely simple soup that doesn't feel the need to apologize or supplement with marshmallows. Lol soup psychology.

highly theoretical, of course. (tehresa), Monday, 29 September 2008 05:55 (fifteen years ago) link

that soup is great! i've only had the smorgasboard brunch at aquavit, but they serve it as a starter. also delicious: the aquavit bloody marys.

tehresa - this place is great: http://www.yelp.com/biz/la-pollera-colorada-sunnyside

lauren, Monday, 29 September 2008 13:37 (fifteen years ago) link

oooh that's super close to where i'm staying!

highly theoretical, of course. (tehresa), Monday, 29 September 2008 14:10 (fifteen years ago) link

it is SO good. they use hardwood charcoal for the rotisserie.

lauren, Monday, 29 September 2008 14:25 (fifteen years ago) link

so as not to overrun the wdyll thread w/ restaurant talk.

smoke joint:
max likes. surmounter likes. i thought 'meh'.

i found their pulled pork rather dry, though :( mac and cheese as well as the collards were uninspiring.

highly theoretical, of course. (tehresa), Sunday, 5 October 2008 21:33 (fifteen years ago) link

ooh i have a thing for the collards. i just love this thread.

Surmounter, Sunday, 5 October 2008 21:36 (fifteen years ago) link

i had a pretty good mac n cheese the other day at the little corner cafe? or something? in soho on bleecker & b'way. that was after i tried to go to the "wichcraft" in the equinox health club and was told the chef was on his break so no sandwiches

max, Sunday, 5 October 2008 21:36 (fifteen years ago) link

the smoke joint guys place in bed-stuy, peaches, is worth a trip on the A--in particular for their salads and veggie dishes, and the pearl pasta.

max, Sunday, 5 October 2008 21:37 (fifteen years ago) link

some ilxors and i ate at taco santana again yesterday. yummmm.

highly theoretical, of course. (tehresa), Sunday, 5 October 2008 22:08 (fifteen years ago) link

we thought smoke joint was terrible, but we ate there within a few months of opening, so i'll defer to more recent opinions. they were overwhelmed, that much was clear. in fort greene, i'm interested in trying no. 7. the chef is a really nice guy who was a few years behind me at school.

pondicherry masala dosas at tiffin wallah today... i loooooooooooove that place.

lauren, Monday, 6 October 2008 00:03 (fifteen years ago) link

thank you, lauren! glad i'm not the only hater! i wonder if i should try again since they seem to have improved? i ate there about a year ago.

highly theoretical, of course. (tehresa), Monday, 6 October 2008 00:06 (fifteen years ago) link

they have fancy hot dogs, i think? i remember laurel saying that she liked those quite a bit.

lauren, Monday, 6 October 2008 00:16 (fifteen years ago) link

no. 7 is supposedly fantastic. a friend of mine has gotten friendly with the peeps over there -- i'm going on thurs.

just had an amazing plate of hacked pork, smoky greens and rice from SJ. well the rice was mine.

Surmounter, Monday, 6 October 2008 00:30 (fifteen years ago) link

yay! i'm really looking forward to trying it.

lauren, Monday, 6 October 2008 00:33 (fifteen years ago) link

I have to say Teresa's has the best blintzes I have ever had in my life, and that means something coming from an ashkenazi jew. I had one plum butter w/cheese and one shredded apple. Hot damn.

Everything is Highlighted (Hurting 2), Monday, 6 October 2008 00:34 (fifteen years ago) link

location, plz.

highly theoretical, of course. (tehresa), Monday, 6 October 2008 00:38 (fifteen years ago) link

that sounds amazing!

Surmounter, Monday, 6 October 2008 00:38 (fifteen years ago) link

Montague and Hicks Streets

Also generally good with the standard polish fare (stuffed cabbage, pierogies, etc.)

jimmy the mod otm, I had those Pinche fish tacs this past Thurs.

dmr, Monday, 6 October 2008 00:50 (fifteen years ago) link

tacos

dmr, Monday, 6 October 2008 00:50 (fifteen years ago) link

pinche is on my list. that reminds me - we had such good fish tacos at la superior in wmsburg the other week. they weren't baja style, but they were so tasty and very simple. just grilled fish with a pickled pepper relish. i think the latter ingredient is a secret weapon.

lauren, Monday, 6 October 2008 01:00 (fifteen years ago) link

I've never been to Teresa's!

When I was in NYC recently, I ate in a restaurant that struck me as the fanciest place I'd ever eaten in. It was kinda weird. I didn't think the food was all that great, though.

It was called Josephina's.

Is there still a Teresa's on Tompkins Square? (and is that the same people?)

Doghouse O RLY (G00blar), Monday, 6 October 2008 01:18 (fifteen years ago) link

The fried catfish sandwich I had at the Smoke Joint was unremarkable, but the cole slaw, which I usually avoid, was very good.

C0L1N B..., Monday, 6 October 2008 01:22 (fifteen years ago) link

was just looking at pinche's site - those fish tacos sound great!!

highly theoretical, of course. (tehresa), Monday, 6 October 2008 01:22 (fifteen years ago) link

i heard something about a hot dog with slaw on top. never thought to do this, but it seems like a great idea!

i think i could talk food all day long.

Surmounter, Monday, 6 October 2008 01:29 (fifteen years ago) link

those tacos make me dream of the fish taco i had at a roadside stand in maui. if they are 1/2 as good i will be very excited!

highly theoretical, of course. (tehresa), Monday, 6 October 2008 01:30 (fifteen years ago) link

can i tell you i've never had a fish taco?

have you guys been to pequena in ft. greene? omg i love them. the space is tiny but the food oh so good

Surmounter, Monday, 6 October 2008 01:37 (fifteen years ago) link

THE PLANTAINS

Surmounter, Monday, 6 October 2008 01:40 (fifteen years ago) link

where do you guys find the time to go all these places?

highly theoretical, of course. (tehresa), Monday, 6 October 2008 01:42 (fifteen years ago) link

go *to

highly theoretical, of course. (tehresa), Monday, 6 October 2008 01:42 (fifteen years ago) link

lol well tbh i generally get pequena for lunch when i'm at work :)

Surmounter, Monday, 6 October 2008 01:43 (fifteen years ago) link

g00blar - i think the teresa's are connected, or were, and the one on 1st ave closed a little while ago.

lauren, Monday, 6 October 2008 02:05 (fifteen years ago) link

i ate at paul's today. the number of bad reviews of paul's on yelp really threw me. i love paul's. today i had the 2nd avenue burger, with cheese, ham, grilled tomato and grilled onions.
always get the "cajun" fries.

ian, Monday, 6 October 2008 02:07 (fifteen years ago) link

just the idea of cajun fries is too much for me to handle

Surmounter, Monday, 6 October 2008 02:08 (fifteen years ago) link

it's nothing special. just like.. fries with spices on them. they're just better than the steak fries, which are kind of bland and mushy usually.

ian, Monday, 6 October 2008 02:15 (fifteen years ago) link

you know, cajun anything and i'm there.

Surmounter, Monday, 6 October 2008 02:17 (fifteen years ago) link
