in order, based on memory rather than hearing them recently - rainbow children, 3121, art official, musicology, MPLS sound, 20 ten, planet earth. never heard the NPGMC compilations, and didnt care much for the third eye girl projects. NEWS is a masterclass in why prince shouldnt make jazz albums.

while DJing on Sunday i was randomly playing Play In The Sunshine as it was outdoors and scorching hot. a guy came up and we chatted about Prince and turns out he had the symbol tat and saw him '21 times' on his London residency in 2007. i said i'd not really heard much that he'd done since the early 90s and straight off he recommended "3121 and The Rainbow Children". so that's what an ultra-hardcore fan thinks anyway.

xpost - i dont remember lotusflower that well which is why i only listed MPLS sound (basically 00s prince doing 80s prince), but it might be decent, not sure. i only remember crimson and clover. the war was just a 40 min long song. i dunno, i remember it being sort of band of gypsies/santana-psych-dreamy-jam sounding with prince in one of his lecturing modes on top (reminds me of something from the gold experience era). i wouldnt mind seeing what its like now.

are there any instances of Prince blocking a cover earlier than Elvis Costello in 1997? it seems like that was the beginning of it becoming a common practice for him in the 2000s.

although i'm sure he blocked a lot of samples after letting a couple early ones like MC Hammer and Arrested Development go ahead

2pac sampled (or replayed) pop life. and i think he sampled the end of darling nikki too. so that was allowed for whatever reason. i remember him saying he got a lot of requests around the time of emancipation, but whether that was really true, or he just blocked them all, im not sure.

'96 was definitely when samples of '80s R&B and pop were taking over mainstream rap so that makes sense, there probably would've been a few Bad Boy smashes with Prince samples if he said yes moer

yeah, i could def imagine puffy reworking stuff like when doves cry or looping some of the time stuff even. biggie's nasty girl im sure was meant to have a vanity sample. would u die 4 me sounds obviously like it was meant to have a sample of kiss too. there were quite a few R&B covers of his songs around that time also, obv.

it actually has some creepy prince moments, which i was not aware was possible but there's a sequence when prince takes the unconscious aura and sorta tries to peek at her breasts
also prince's chest hair is shaved into a heart with words in the middle that say "beat me"
it's a weird fucking movie

i mean the crux of the story is that morris day is the tough guy pimp. he is not very frightening.

it's weird to think how differently things would've been if Prince DID have success in film after Purple Rain. like would he have just become Elvis, doing an endless series of goofy musicals? would he have transitioned into dramatic roles and, like, played the Jeff Goldblum part in Jurassic Park or something?

Would like to contemplate this, but can't stop thinking about Leiber & Stoller getting frozen out as songwriters for Elvis by Colonel Tom and the Aberbachs after recommending to the King that he stretch his acting chops by accepting the lead in a film of Nelson Algren's A Walk on the Wild Side.

Graffiti Bridge.

It is terrible, but in an interesting pre-verbal way. There's a lot of delightful clothes to look at. Prince's hair is really awful though, one of his few dud looks. I love the stagey compressed sets for Seven Corners and the Bridge. I have no idea what happened in several scenes of this movie.

GB is one of those films where, rather than stamp out bootlegs, prince should have dedicated his crack team of 'sharp female lawyers' to destroying all available copies and prints. all that should remain of that film is the soundtrack, and the poster, which i quite like.

the original early 80s rockabilly version of tick tick bang is better than the GB version for anyone who likes that one.

No it's not, I've heard both and I prefer the GB version.

Bad hair. Good clothes though. I love this line in the Not Coming piece: "The film had the dubious honor of winning five Razzie awards, even tying with Howard the Duck for Worst Picture. But does Howard the Duck feature Prince, in a bathtub filled with rose petals, playing with a toy boat while wearing a hat? No."

So many highly enjoyable details in that movie. Great bit of backwards film in the "Girls and Boys" performance for instance.

i watched it for the first time yesterday and I think the biggest sin against it is that it's kinda boring, which I can't say about under the cherry moon or purple rain

a middle ground between purple rain (same plot essentially just with religious overtones) and sign o the times (exclusively filmed on soundstages plus great performances) should theoretically kinda rule but it just kinda dully meanders
