Voted for Red but I think Patti Smith is Jersey enough to be on the list. Also I would write in Jim Albertson

As a lifelong NJ resident I am obviously casting my vote for Springsteen. For those looking for more write-in possibilities how about:

Whitney Houston
Karen O
Gaslight Anthem
The Smithereens
Shaquille O'Neal
My Chemical Romance
Winter Hours

You guys all still live in NJ?

Evan, Wednesday, 1 June 2016 13:20 (seven years ago) link

misfits are the obvious correct choice

Voted for David S. Ware because nobody else was going to, and because he lived two towns over from me. Super nice guy.

i voted for ware too! though after seeing heron oblivion on saturday night i might shoulda gone w/ meg baird

adam, Wednesday, 1 June 2016 14:29 (seven years ago) link

david s. ware as well, because he was great. Almost tempted to vote Redman for his first two albums, but too much he did afterwards was so so.

calzino, Wednesday, 1 June 2016 14:50 (seven years ago) link

Seriously, George Clinton. I grew up in the town where he had his barber shop. I love the feelies and all, but come on.

(Actually O.T. Zappo is the correct choice, but nobody is going to know who he is and google isn't going to help you much on this one.)

tossed Sarah Vaughan a vote (my dad always talked about the time she sang in the church choir with him)

tbh, I never really felt like Bruce was that big a deal south of Cherry Hill. Heard more stories about George Thorogood.

We have a winner. I'll even concede O.T. Zappo to him.

dlp9001, Thursday, 2 June 2016 00:52 (seven years ago) link

Well if we're choosing people because we lived near them, I'm going to have to vote for Enzo Stuarti.

ducktails and real estate shouldn't have different listings. you're going to split the matt mondanile vote... not that he would win anyway.

memory tapes is the best new jersey chillwave act anyway

Treeship, Thursday, 2 June 2016 05:32 (seven years ago) link

I never thought of Ducktails as chillwave. First record (which I love) is "lo-fi bedroom pop" or whatever and the more recent records (not a fan) are more straight up cleanly produced indie rock iirc

Evan, Thursday, 2 June 2016 12:26 (seven years ago) link

they've moved away from the chillwave sound, but i think their early stuff was definitely a chillwave side project to "real estate," which had a kind of chillwavey dreamlike quality to it too, even though they were releasing more or less straight ahead surf rock songs

Glad to see David S Ware got some votes, was listening to Godspelized earlier and not caring if he fits the criteria for jersey bard.

His Parker/Shipp/Ibarra quintet does bring out his lyrical qualities beautifully though.
