I like Bloodsports a lot, too, but I'd put it just below the other three (or 4 or 5, however you want count them). Way above the other ones, though, or at least a little above Coming Up (which I haven't listened to for a while).

brett's quite the showman for all his 48 y/o man prancing around in an open shirt antics, found myself saying to my gf 'he has a dignity that damon albarn lacks'

Not to mention that Suede have been putting out better music than Blur have been recently! I'm amazed at just how well Suede managed to get their shit together since re-forming - they seem to be enjoying themselves a lot and all of them seem to be in love with being in a band together again and you can really hear it in the music. The Blur album suffered because, if you read between the lines, Damon wasn't really that arsed.

Turrican, Thursday, 2 June 2016 23:23 (seven years ago) link

Bloodsports and Night Thoughts have both got me looking forward to what they do next. I'd love it if they carried on in the direction of Night Thoughts and went further down that route.

Strange how things have panned out for the major bands of that era. Suede are making records I thought they didn't have in 'em, Radiohead are still making great records 20 years in. On the other hand, Blur and SFA, who you'd assume would be as creative as ever all these years later, are long past their prime. Manic Street Preachers have settled into nostalgic album-themed tours, Supergrass still potentially had a couple of decent records left in 'em, I don't need to hear a note of anything Noel or Liam Gallagher has done since 1996, and Pulp really really should make another record. If there's a band that I think could come back with something great, it's them.

Turrican, Thursday, 2 June 2016 23:44 (seven years ago) link

The Verve should just re-group without Ashcroft, team up with John Leckie, and make an instrumental space-rock LP of the type they used to make before their singers ego ballooned to ridiculously huge proportions.

Turrican, Thursday, 2 June 2016 23:49 (seven years ago) link

it's weird. suede crashed and burned maybe worse than blur ever did but the way they came back is...i don't understand how they've done it. it's to the extent where i'm wondering if they weren't always fundamentally the better band

I think that Suede's first three LP's and Sci-Fi Lullabies have aged far better than a lot of what Blur did in their prime. It's tempting to think of what could have been if Brett hadn't got big time into hard drugs, which I think was ultimately the real downfall of the band and had a knock-on effect on everything - the music, the vibe of the band etc.

'geese' should not rhyme with 'chase' and I'm still not sure if Brett pulls it off

I Don't Know How To Reach You has sort of been my doomed-world anthem these last few days. It feels like a recently-deceased British culture revived as a timeless lament for a fatally fragmented discourse. And, as above, it's just about the best Britpop song conceivable

Over a year on, and this album is still fucking great.

I like this fine but I could never get into it the same way I did with Bloodsports.

kitchen person, Wednesday, 26 April 2017 22:12 (six years ago) link

Like the album just fine, but after sitting through two performances featuring that dreadful film, it's hard to shake off the 'sub-Jarman directs Eastenders' mental image

PaulTMA, Thursday, 27 April 2017 10:40 (six years ago) link

I enjoyed it upon release (surprisingly since I never cared about Bloodsport) but somehow, it's associated with dark, gloomy moments so I haven't felt like listening to it since then.
I remember there are very good (if not brilliant) tracks and the whole thing works well.
Nowhere near their first two albums (+ SCFI#1) though.
I might give it another try.

I'm also surprised I didn't participate in this thread initially !

No "proper" studio album they've ever made touches the first disc of Sci-Fi Lullabies!

The Anti-Climax Blues Band (Turrican), Thursday, 27 April 2017 17:20 (six years ago) link

as recently established,the debut does

imago, Thursday, 27 April 2017 18:13 (six years ago) link

Not even the debut does, IMO.

The Anti-Climax Blues Band (Turrican), Thursday, 27 April 2017 18:26 (six years ago) link

fine

well, at the risk of repeating myself once too often, track 5 of this album has imo a claim to be their best song and everyone needs to go back and hear it a few times until they agree

imago, Thursday, 27 April 2017 18:30 (six years ago) link

Loved Bloodsports but kicking off with Editors/'Real Life'-era Simple Minds stinker 'Barriers' makes it a 9 track album for me

PaulTMA, Friday, 28 April 2017 13:14 (six years ago) link

Nah, 'Barriers' is great, as is all of Bloodsports ... I would have had zero complaints if they'd put Bloodsports or Night Thoughts out in the late '90s. I'm really glad they reformed.

Ha, looks like I got my wish!

Although, I'm revisiting Night Thoughts after mostly reaching for The Blue Hour whenever I feel like listening to Suede, and I have to say that I still think this is the best of the three records they've released since they got back together, and I love the other two a lot. As far as reforming and putting out new music that's up there with their very best material goes, this band have really shown everyone how it's done.

Le Baton Rose (Turrican), Tuesday, 11 June 2019 16:03 (four years ago) link

I think The Blue Hour is the better record, slightly, but I Don't Know How To Reach You is still their best post-reformation song. Really heartening how good they've gotten again

imago, Tuesday, 11 June 2019 16:14 (four years ago) link

Brett's been saying during press for The Blue Hour that he thinks that that record will be the most far out the reformed Suede will go, which suggests that a Bloodsports type of record will be next. I won't have a problem with that if the songs are good, though!

For some reason I'm in a Suede mood atm (maybe the autumn) and I've been revisiting/rediscovering some of their stuff.
As posted above, I liked this one initially but hadn't really dug deeper until now and... I reaaally like it !
It's very consistent, rich, catchy, with more depth than almost anything they've done post BB.
Actually, I think it's their best post BB album (which may not say much since I never really loved Coming Up, although I recongnize it's efficient and catchy, HM is a trainwreck, ANM is nice, never got into Bloodsports).
I've also listened to the Blue Hour (no thread for that one ?) which is also good and has a nice atmosphere but lacks in the songs department.

since you're in the mood, did you check out the alternate takes/mixes from head music being released? here's a good one:

Ah thanks but as I mentioned on the other Suede thread, I have tried again but HM is really not my thing !

AlXTC from Paris, Thursday, 7 November 2019 14:10 (four years ago) link

I thought that was New Morning you didn't like? nobody does :P

The "Can't Get Enough" mix from 1998 sounds more like a Coming Up track to me
