The rest of it sounds fine so in the absence of a better explanation I'm going to blame Kanye.

when in doubt

Does anyone think this is better than Acid Rain and the best parts of Surf (i.e. Sunday Candy) though? It's mostly v blissful to me but I have a hard time ranking it over his previous work.

human and working on getting beer (longneck), Tuesday, 17 May 2016 18:59 (eight years ago) link

I'll take it over Acid Rap, but Sunday Candy is the best thing he's ever done.

Frederik B, Tuesday, 17 May 2016 19:01 (eight years ago) link

i have the exact opposite opinion of this post ^

J0rdan S., Tuesday, 17 May 2016 19:02 (eight years ago) link

I agree that it could use more juke beats, but it still has a juke sensibility in parts. Angels, for instance. The interplay between the horns and beats in the chorus sounds quite jukish to me. The end of Summer Friends, after Jeremiah comes in, the beats begin changing, and it almost hints at a juke jam before it ends. In other places, I think the rhythmic interplay from juke is influencing the way Chance rides the beat. The way parts of the songs seem to flow in different tempi.

Anyone know why it's off datpiff? It says that a complaint has been filed against it from some lawyer firm. Is it downloadable some place else without a subscription?

Frederik B, Tuesday, 17 May 2016 19:11 (eight years ago) link

Apple had it pulled, they have an exclusive

ulysses, Tuesday, 17 May 2016 19:12 (eight years ago) link

Streaming site exclusives are going to become very tiresome very quickly for a lot of people. No one's going to keep two or three subscriptions going and presumably you can't keep signing up for free trials. So everyone will just end up stealing the thing anyway, especially as there's unlikely to be a physical product in these instances.

Matt DC, Tuesday, 17 May 2016 19:30 (eight years ago) link

yeah I've resorted back to torrenting some things after a two/three year hiatus

i'm in the acid rap >>> cb camp

yeah i've missed out on hearing a bunch of stuff now (including this chance). i have a spotify subscription & i've always said i'd be willing to pay significantly more than i do now for a "complete" streaming service (especially if it compensated artists in an improved way). but i really don't know if that extends to paying ~$10 a month to multiple shitty tech companies.

not the thread for that discussion, sorry. hope to hear this mixtape some day soon!

tpp, Wednesday, 18 May 2016 11:15 (eight years ago) link

i mean you could just use google and find the mp3's...

ANU (sisilafami), Wednesday, 18 May 2016 11:42 (eight years ago) link

i pay roughly $30 a month for Spotify, Apple and Tidal because being able to virtually anything I want for the amount that used to buy me 3 CDs is pretty fucking cool and i pay way more for cable TV, which i care about way less.

a goon shaped tool (some dude), Wednesday, 18 May 2016 12:09 (eight years ago) link

Ugh I have considered that too but damn there reall has got to be a better way.

(•̪●) (carne asada), Wednesday, 18 May 2016 12:19 (eight years ago) link

i'm not mad at the streaming wars because i feel like it'll have overall positive impacts on the music business that a Spotify monopoly wouldn't.

a goon shaped tool (some dude), Wednesday, 18 May 2016 12:44 (eight years ago) link

Or you'll do really well out of it if you're Kanye or Beyonce and everyone else will get the same shitty treatment.

i only use Spotify as background music at home w/my gf, and still listen to mp3s in the car like an old person. not having the option to pay for a digital copy of something i like bums me out.

i agree with this in principle as well but it's annoying and dumb and occasionally slows down my tech to have to search various apps for the music I want to listen to

ulysses, Wednesday, 18 May 2016 17:57 (eight years ago) link

in my world of young people update: i was talking with a pair of interns working with me last night and it became clear that they didn't know a music marketplace other than the streaming one. They became conscious consumers during the itunes era and have spent all their teens with spotify and youtube. one of them told me she remembered having a big book of cds that she took with her to elementary school.
i always kinda thought that a generation spoiled in this fashion would become dependent and it kinda worked?

ulysses, Wednesday, 18 May 2016 18:01 (eight years ago) link

we do have a number of active threads discussing music distribution already tho

This is an awesome mindset. I'm happy to pay for a service or two, too, b/c I never want to pirate music ever again. But what does Spotify provide you with that Apple and Tidal don't? They don't have exclusives, do they?

whoa this record is really good

marcos, Wednesday, 18 May 2016 18:28 (eight years ago) link

the features here are great, even wayne imo lol

marcos, Thursday, 19 May 2016 21:27 (eight years ago) link

i think the wayne verse is amazing. honestly wonder if he's gotten off drugs or something cuz there's emotional & lyrical complexity in this verse that i feel like he hasn't shown in like 5 years.

Hold up, get too choked up when I think of old stuff
Move on, put my goons on, they kidnap newborns
In the streets my face a coupon
Her pussy too warm
All these bitches come to do harm
Just bought a new charm
Fuck the watch, I buy a new arm, you lukewarm
I'm Uncle Luke with the hoes
Pretty bitches, centerfolds
Tippy toes around my crib in their robes, just their robes
Half a milli' in the safe, another in the pillowcase
Codeine got me movin' slower than a caterpillar race

J0rdan S., Thursday, 19 May 2016 22:52 (eight years ago) link

well i'd group that verse in w/ the 2 chainz collab album where he's also very lucid and creative

J0rdan S., Thursday, 19 May 2016 22:53 (eight years ago) link

I like that verse a lot. There were a lot of the same shades of emotional vulnerability and openness on Sorry For The Wait 2, as well, but they were understandably overshadowed by the many, many stinkers on that tape. Underdog Wayne is kind of an interesting idea for him to explore; would love to see him run with it on Carter Whatever # He's On.

I don't care for the song, but Wayne's verse is his best in years -- otm

a rare reference to Wayne's Scottish roots?

Number None, Thursday, 19 May 2016 23:35 (eight years ago) link

There's only a couple years where "Wayne fell off" talk felt 100% accurate to me. Didn't like any of last year's projects though, don't think I ever made it very far into the second No Ceilings where he rapped over a bunch of cut-rate versions of Drake/Future beats

nova, Thursday, 19 May 2016 23:42 (eight years ago) link

not hearing the wayne verse as solid at all and while some of that is up to the mix some of it is certainly up to taste.

ulysses, Friday, 20 May 2016 14:29 (seven years ago) link

Yeah, Wayne is mostly good again in 2016. Such a relief. 2015 was dark.

human and working on getting beer (longneck), Friday, 20 May 2016 15:13 (seven years ago) link

I listened to this again and that first track is definitely Kanye's fault, to the extent that I wonder if it was actually 'finished' before his vocals were even recorded, and the whole mix was squashed to allow Kanye to trample all over them. That vocoder is so much louder than Everything else and so out of place that I can't think of another scenario.

Matt DC, Saturday, 21 May 2016 09:06 (seven years ago) link

kinda in love with this album

ulysses, Monday, 23 May 2016 00:43 (seven years ago) link

ha, not sure why everybody rips the mix on the opener. It sounds very deliberate to me; there's supposed to be a sense of disruption.

Evan R, Monday, 23 May 2016 14:12 (seven years ago) link

it's cuz it sounds terrible

J0rdan S., Monday, 23 May 2016 14:14 (seven years ago) link

yeah Spotify has the least in the way of exclusives but it's also the one i've had the longest and use with the most ease and keep most of my playlists on, so it's the one i would keep if i was only going to have one.
