The portraits of the 1830S and early 1840S reveal a very different figure - slender, with a dandified dignity. Alan Walker has quoted a description of him written by Balzac's mistress in 1843:
Liszt is of medium height, thin, pale and drawn. He has the bilious complexion belonging to people of great talent and per- sonality. His features are regular.
