sam jax sax jam (Jordan), Tuesday, 17 May 2016 01:03 (seven years ago) link

not hearing any jazz odysseys in there, more light fusion of the type that was basically standard for that period, esp if you were a fan of rufus, the crusaders, weather report, etc, as i imagine prince was. but its great/interesting that even then, he had a pop ear for concision, and melody. i love prince's 70s period.

I had no idea, but I guess those iVault collections have been circulating for years, competing with Work It 2.0 or whatever it's called, which people hold in higher esteem because it's higher quality. At least one of the iVault collections has, like, multiple takes of crap George Clinton or Mayte tracks which drive even fans nuts. I still want to find that Year in the Life collection, but there's something else I saw mentioned, maybe called ... Revolution Part 2 or something? Revelations 2.1?

This is my fave outtake...just glorious

The most essential obscurities collection I've found since his death is a pair of 2cd sets called Hard 2 Get volumes 1 and 2, it's a great complement to Perfect Unreleased Prince. It includes "Adonis and Bathsheba" which is I think the best outtake I've heard. I found it on a purple message board without too much trouble.

Jordan, any chance you can share those rips?

leaving for NY makes me think of MJ. also a bit stevie-ish when it hits 4 mins.

StillAdvance, Tuesday, 17 May 2016 14:20 (seven years ago) link

i'll ask if he can put them on Dropbox or something

sam jax sax jam (Jordan), Tuesday, 17 May 2016 14:27 (seven years ago) link

can personally vouch for amazingness that is The Work compilations -- 8 volumes that I'm aware of, each multiple discs themselves of unreleased stuff and demos. Essentially, it's Prince's Fuzzy Warbles, and having only heard the first two sets (which cover 1976-87), need no further convincing he had many albums of great stuff he could have released. When he wasn't onstage, the guy seems to have lived in the studio.

Dominique, Tuesday, 17 May 2016 14:32 (seven years ago) link

Gracias!

ulysses, Tuesday, 17 May 2016 15:04 (seven years ago) link

Look out for the Blast from the Past collections as well. Volumes 1 to 3 (so far) - if anything for the amazing sound quality on some of the classic outtakes/demos that have circulated for years in pretty shitty condition.

Acid Hose (Capitaine Jay Vee), Tuesday, 17 May 2016 15:09 (seven years ago) link

All told, however, once you hit 1990 on The Work an some of the other big collections it's diminishing returns. How many outtakes featuring TC Ellis, Carmen Electra or Mayte can a person handle? The drop in creative quality is pretty far until the Slave-era and even there his embrace of bloooz and Band Of Gypsies-style jamming gets tedious.

Acid Hose (Capitaine Jay Vee), Tuesday, 17 May 2016 15:12 (seven years ago) link

Love you, Prince, but I would've said this six months ago even.

Acid Hose (Capitaine Jay Vee), Tuesday, 17 May 2016 15:13 (seven years ago) link

Jeebus, every time I look for one of these boots I stumble on like a thousand others. Seen the Sabotage series, of dozens of soundboards and whatnot? Man ...

Hang On To Your Evol (James Redd and the Blecchs), Tuesday, 17 May 2016 15:16 (seven years ago) link

I've been binging on Prince bios since I really knew nothing outside the music, and the most consistently hilarious stuff is the Prince-Rick James relationship...James is constantly stymied, flummoxed, and exasperated by this little dude copping (supposedly) all his moves, etc

That one only popped up last year I think. I love it. It's like a bizarro "Adore".

And one of the two recordings he did with Miles Davis ( the other one's Chaka Khan's "Sticky Wicked" ) recently surfaced in great quality. So they'll probably keep on coming as they have for years. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AnIBwWr8KJI

"Can I Play With U" is one of the classic outtakes but it's never been this clean.

"Do Yourself a Favor" is absurdly great, like how could he give that one away. it reminds me of that vincent gallo quote "i quit painting to deprive people of my work out of spite"

bought the per nilsen book in a second hand store couple years back, regret returning it to same store when I'd read it - but then again it's probably made someone else happy now

Whoever up thread recommended the Detroit Cobo Hall "Birthday" show from 1986 was right on. So good. That audience is really something, just freaking the entire show.

did prince love flanger because most flanger units are purple? or were they made purple after prince started using it on everything?.... .. .. .. .

Love this, because for a guy who played so much he mostly played guitar live. Nice to see him be awesome on another instrument.

yah prince was a better bass player than every bass player he ever had in any band, including levi.

since we're posting our fav vault shit - this was the song that opened my eyes to the underground prince stuff. i was obsessed with sign o/black album/camille/dream factory period and when i heard this for the first time it blew my mind!! i always called it his "nine inch nails" song but listening now i dont know what i did that.
