johnny crunch, Friday, 13 May 2016 22:52 (eight years ago) link

Van Horn Street, Friday, 13 May 2016 22:53 (eight years ago) link

i hope they Kanye that shit and fix it

sam jax sax jam (Jordan), Friday, 13 May 2016 23:23 (eight years ago) link

for those worried, there's a proper rip with a proper mix out there.

ANU (sisilafami), Saturday, 14 May 2016 12:11 (eight years ago) link

how would a fan 'fix' a mix without the multitrack studio files

a goon shaped tool (some dude), Saturday, 14 May 2016 12:32 (eight years ago) link

is the apple music one better? xp

, Saturday, 14 May 2016 12:56 (eight years ago) link

yeah, it was nice when Surf was a free download on itunes, dunno why they didn't do that again unless they really are trying hard to market Apple Music and/or phase out purchased downloads

a goon shaped tool (some dude), Saturday, 14 May 2016 13:37 (eight years ago) link

wonder how much apple pays for these short windows of exclusivity

they are trying hard to ... etc

Listen to my homeboy Fantano (D-40), Saturday, 14 May 2016 14:12 (eight years ago) link

I don't think they're trying to phase out downloads. I imagine the tape will be available for free download when it stops being exclusive and migrates onto other streaming platforms

Apple still makes a good deal of money on downloads, they won't phase them out until they're making more money off Apple Music than iTunes. That's definitely not happening yet

a poon shaped mule (voodoo chili), Saturday, 14 May 2016 14:45 (eight years ago) link

longneck you should look for the aac rip on soulseek

ANU (sisilafami), Saturday, 14 May 2016 16:10 (eight years ago) link

i think i read on billboard that putting it up as a stream first allows it to be counted as an official album release (i.e. soundscan will count the streams up) which, among other things, mean it can be entered from grammy consideration

J0rdan S., Saturday, 14 May 2016 16:18 (eight years ago) link

entered for...

J0rdan S., Saturday, 14 May 2016 16:19 (eight years ago) link

he did a deal with apple though & apple is trying to scale subscriptions to its streaming service

Listen to my homeboy Fantano (D-40), Saturday, 14 May 2016 16:53 (eight years ago) link

Thanks, sisi. I don't use soulseek but the aac tag helped me search for it. Will give this version a try. Is the apple music version as bad as the datpiff version or is there a difference?

human and working on getting beer (longneck), Saturday, 14 May 2016 20:56 (eight years ago) link

various ilxors currently arguing abt whether chance is an independent artist on twitter but the thing is no one really knows his status, he might just be a disney boy band, or he cld be selling mixtapes out of the trunk of his car, jayz mightve signed him to a 360 deal five years ago

lag∞n, Saturday, 14 May 2016 21:32 (eight years ago) link

who is future and why does he always like an anemic dog

Van Horn Street, Saturday, 14 May 2016 21:56 (eight years ago) link

He's not signed to a label or a publishing company but he's signed to CAA.

finding it hard to get into this, just like surf last year. loved acid rap, but not much chance has done after.

I'm fairly confident chance has not signed a record deal but I do not know the terms of his deal with Apple

I am guessing it is a content deal song the lines of what Drake has with apple

after a few listens i'm starting to really like it, which is exactly the opposite reaction i've had from other hip hop records this year (except kendrick's)

Van Horn Street, Monday, 16 May 2016 01:57 (eight years ago) link

One of the things i like the most about Chance is that he raps over juke beats and he's really good at it so i'm a bit disappointed cuz this has no juke beats.

ANU (sisilafami), Monday, 16 May 2016 09:21 (eight years ago) link

Mixtape is so weird. I kinda love it but it doesn't even feel like Chance is on it.

human and working on getting beer (longneck), Monday, 16 May 2016 14:19 (eight years ago) link

The song "Mixtape" that is. Not this mixtape.

Well Yachty kinda outshines him too and that feels so... weird.

human and working on getting beer (longneck), Monday, 16 May 2016 17:22 (eight years ago) link

not gonna concede that point but it sounds like a thugger song regardless

lag∞n, Monday, 16 May 2016 17:23 (eight years ago) link

coloring book is a good album.

ulysses, Monday, 16 May 2016 17:27 (eight years ago) link

bummed out by wayne on "no problem" which is great except for him.

ulysses, Monday, 16 May 2016 17:44 (eight years ago) link

Great album but good lord that first track sounds like complete shit, that low brass noise and the vocoders just crashing into everything else. Pretty sure I'm listening to the supposedly superior AAC version as well.

The rest is nearly uniformly fantastic.

Matt DC, Tuesday, 17 May 2016 16:21 (eight years ago) link

Yeah the «aac» is slightly less abrasive but still sounds like shit, unfortunately. Why did Acid Rap and Surf both sound so much better than this?

human and working on getting beer (longneck), Tuesday, 17 May 2016 17:02 (eight years ago) link

maybe he wanted to make it more of a genuine mixtape experience

lag∞n, Tuesday, 17 May 2016 17:17 (eight years ago) link

The rest of it sounds fine so in the absence of a better explanation I'm going to blame Kanye.

Matt DC, Tuesday, 17 May 2016 18:27 (eight years ago) link

when in doubt

ulysses, Tuesday, 17 May 2016 18:42 (eight years ago) link

Does anyone think this is better than Acid Rain and the best parts of Surf (i.e. Sunday Candy) though? It's mostly v blissful to me but I have a hard time ranking it over his previous work.

human and working on getting beer (longneck), Tuesday, 17 May 2016 18:59 (eight years ago) link

I'll take it over Acid Rap, but Sunday Candy is the best thing he's ever done.

Frederik B, Tuesday, 17 May 2016 19:01 (eight years ago) link

i have the exact opposite opinion of this post ^

J0rdan S., Tuesday, 17 May 2016 19:02 (eight years ago) link

I agree that it could use more juke beats, but it still has a juke sensibility in parts. Angels, for instance. The interplay between the horns and beats in the chorus sounds quite jukish to me. The end of Summer Friends, after Jeremiah comes in, the beats begin changing, and it almost hints at a juke jam before it ends. In other places, I think the rhythmic interplay from juke is influencing the way Chance rides the beat. The way parts of the songs seem to flow in different tempi.
