Oh wait you meant the album
Yeah, I meant the album... their mid '80s work doesn't feel like the same band to me.
― But... could you imagine a formation in your lemonade? Ho! (Turrican), Thursday, 12 May 2016 23:18 (seven years ago) link
this is horrible. and what is this an advertisement for the Trump campaign?
― Bee OK, Friday, 13 May 2016 01:51 (seven years ago) link
Trump pretty much owns the word 'wall' now
― Poliopolice, Friday, 13 May 2016 01:53 (seven years ago) link
'Trump rally' was my first thought too. appalling music.

I've heard this song one and a bit times and I seem to know it.
― a goon shaped fule (onimo), Friday, 13 May 2016 07:51 (seven years ago) link
that's because it does pretty much the same thing all the way through. it really feels like half a song written as an unfinished demo. the drums are really really really bad.

it's worth listening to just to feel safely sure that it is shite. there is no confusion, it's almost satisfying. that was shite. one listen. then you're done.
― japanese mage (LocalGarda), Friday, 13 May 2016 09:26 (seven years ago) link
It did seem i'd have to buy the d/l to hear it, then someone said it's on Spotify, so that's a quid (or whatever) saved.
― Mark G, Friday, 13 May 2016 09:37 (seven years ago) link
Sounds like a demo. It's an outrageous rip off of that Fall song, and the Fall song wasn't any good either. Also I kept being reminded of the band Tomorrow, but as I am going to make strenuous efforts never to hear it again, I cannot investigate the comparison further.

Turns out John did have *some* desire to desecrate that grave after all ...
― Steve Reich In The Afternoon (Against The 80s), Friday, 13 May 2016 14:18 (seven years ago) link
also, the other thing I realized: the lyrics are bad, but when I think about them in context, as a commentary on the band itself and where they are in this moment in time, they make more sense-- especially as a lead single. still not good, mind you, but a bit more understandable.
― Poliopolice, Friday, 13 May 2016 14:20 (seven years ago) link
his first solo album was called "Time Changes Everything", so perhaps not a complete shock.

on the other hand. it kinda sucks.
― frogbs, Friday, 13 May 2016 14:36 (seven years ago) link
I have no idea why people are falling over themselves to be disappointed by this inconsequential song from a band who have always quietly gone about their business with no attending hype or mythology

Aside from "I Wanna Be Adored", this band is some of the biggest bullshit
― Master of Treacle, Friday, 13 May 2016 14:42 (seven years ago) link
it is that bad.
― japanese mage (LocalGarda), Friday, 13 May 2016 14:43 (seven years ago) link
I'm not disappointed, I fully expected it to be shit. If anything, I'm quietly pleased that it is.
― Matt DC, Friday, 13 May 2016 14:43 (seven years ago) link
Actually, they have never been the band that gave owt for nowt. If this had been a free download and a "We're Back" type thing, then fine. But I more or less remember them being barely in their own videos, "Love Spreads" was invested by din't of being issued with a large fanfare and nothing else, and as for "Spike Island" why not set up stall some place impossible to get to and charge how much?
None of those things on their own are bad, just..
― Mark G, Friday, 13 May 2016 14:45 (seven years ago) link
I also like "She Bangs the Drum", "Waterfall" and "Fools Gold".

Just seen (by me, anyway), this is coming out on 7" and CD single. (1st July)
B-sides? It doesn't say, but I expect nowt.
xpost I do like those three, never fussed about "adored"
― Mark G, Friday, 13 May 2016 14:49 (seven years ago) link
i wasn't even going to listen to it but this pleasure you mention is what drew me towards it. it is fitting and right that this is terrible. a good bookend.

― i like to trump and i am crazy (DJP), Friday, 13 May 2016 15:33 (seven years ago) link
I think the main problem with it is that it's Stone Roses in 'classic rock' mode, and not sure why anyone would want that. John Squire seems to be set against absolutely everything that made them briefly interesting in the late 90s. If you want to launch a comeback without offering either what you originally brought to the table or something new, then why even bother?
― Camaraderie at Arms Length, Friday, 13 May 2016 15:46 (seven years ago) link
