Wondering if it is a constant any time you have a film made in any specific location you're familiar with to be wondering why the film's geographical logic doesn't follow the real one.
Sat and watched a show yesterday where a plot point hinged on a teen having to wait for a bus home to a location that was about 50 feet away from where he was standing.
So wondered if that was true with somebody any time there was external shooting in any film.

There is a poetry slam movie set in DC where one of the slam scenes in a club is set in Fez, under the old Time Cafe in Manhattan. At one point the protagonist runs out of the club and across town to the...Lincoln Memorial.

This is why I could never watch the Blues Brothers with my stepdad from Chicago.

Blues Brothers is mostly accurate, iirc.

He saw the sign for the funeral home where they first get stopped and went nuts when they suddenly appeared inside the Dixie Square Shopping Center.

I get the same way during Smokey & The Bandit, so who am I to point fingers.

pplains, Wednesday, 11 May 2016 14:23 (seven years ago) link

Ha, yeah, forgot about that. That would be like an hour-long chase.

A friend of mine lived near the Dixie Square in 1979-80, which was closed at the time. Suddenly one day it appeared open, lit up, and fully-stocked. Two days later, closed again. He thought he'd imagined its phantom reopening until he saw the Blues Brothers months later and realized it was done for the filming.

This shit is worse when you live in a country like Australia or Canada and your country gets used as a cheap stand-in for America; recognisible Melbourne or Sydney or Toronto landmarks are supposed to be somewhere in downtown Bumfuckville, USA

yeah there was that Jackie Chan one (Mr nice guy, I think?) where he'd run into Block Arcade in the CBD, and emerge from some random spot in Fitzroy or some crap.

I get cravings for candy at movies. But don't want a whole box of the shit. The Regals near me always have 50 cent candy machines. I always have singles and no change. There is always a change machine next to them

None of them ever. Fucking. Work.

This is more US-centric than what JM was talking about, but Robocop (set in New Detroit) always kills me with its shots of Dallas.

what if the movie wasn't filmed in dallas, they just cgi'd the tower in for its deep and obvious symbolism

i saw a movie that was actually partially shot in Orlando last year. was fairly good overall but they kept talking about the Suntrust Building downtown like it was some landmark that every Orlandoan cherish as some kind of landmark when in reality it's just where people go and take a piss when they're drunk.

Wondering how amateur using a reversed version of a pretty well known image of a band as a magazine cover is. Just seen the next Shindig. That staircase image of Love has been around for years. It actually has another shot in the sequence taken from the other side of the stairs. So why they've gone ahead with that image escapes me. Seems like a stupid mistake. But that isn't the first time I've seen or read something like that in there.

I work with someone whose boyfriend came in to see her, and he was wearing a fedora. This alone is annoying. But then later found a hat brush and cleaned it while he was wearing it. This drove me mental for some reason.

Finding that my boyfriend has been unironically posting in threads called 'Do you reckon you'll have sex today?'. But it's cool because he's proven himself to be a feminist with all his unresearched writing about the sex industry.

so my phone can do all this amazing magical stuff but doesn't have a tiny LED near the USB port so I can plug the charger in in the dark?

Looks like exiting managing company canceled the rubbish collection and new landlord hasn't introduced themself or picked up such things.
So the rubbish compound is accumulating and looks like it'll overflow.

Also finding out that my problem with the lights recently has been experienced by at least one other tenant in the block.

When people post Humans of New York type stories that involve unbearable tragedy to facebook -- I start reading them in the middle of a workday with no preparation for what I'm going to read, expecting a cute story or something, and then suddenly I'm reading about a mother watching her seven year old slowly die and I have to fight not to bawl uncontrollably. It's not that I think the stories shouldn't be shared at all, it's just that there's something about having it sprung on you out of nowhere when you're not at all emotionally prepared and maybe even have people walking by your open office door.

Hey, California

You can use the bike lane to turn right when there isn't a dedicated turn lane. You do not have to completely stop in street traffic and execute a geometrically perfect 45 degree turn. Also you could use your turn signals. Before you're halfway through your turn.

Oh and when you're making a left turn you don't have to swerve halfway into the next lane just to get the right angle. If you know how to drive that fucking behemoth SUV/pickup/Area Denial Vehicle.

In New York, a new thing, not sure if it's happening elsewhere: people coming in the opposite direction who refuse to walk on the right side of the sidewalk and insist on walking on the left (to your right). Maddening.

Iago Galdston, Sunday, 22 May 2016 12:14 (seven years ago) link

People who cant walk properly in big cities in general. Usually tourists.

Agreed. But these are all definitely locals. It's something weirder, more pernicious, that's going on!

Iago Galdston, Sunday, 22 May 2016 12:38 (seven years ago) link

That reminds me, for the past several months, on a certain stretch of relatively wide sidewalk, people have been stepping into the street, on our right, to pass us. Rather than to the left.

People who browse my store and dont find anything they wanna buy but cant leave without making a point of they will definitely come back to buy something to me. Just leave its cool you dont have to lie to me.

ppl in stores who act like this are the worst. just wander through the aisles haphazardly not looking where anyone else is. i was at ikea a couple weeks ago and this dude was standing in the middle of the pathway that ikea has where they have arrows. he was taking up too much room and talking to his wife or whomever but there was plenty of room for me to walk by. the minute i walked by he steps backwards and i duck out of his way, because i'm not a savage so i'm paying attention to where my body is, and i keep walking. when i get like 10 feet away he says not quietly "people never say excuse me when they walk by anymore it's incredible." like this is my fault you take up all the space?

#amazing #babies #touching (harbl), Sunday, 22 May 2016 13:50 (seven years ago) link

always amazes me when people decide to move without bothering to scan the area around them and then acting stunned that someone else actually occupies the space around them.

I once got smashed into by this guy at work because I was leaving the elevator, and he was entering, and he was walking onto the elevator with his head facing the complete opposite direction talking to somebody. he was apologetic but y'know.

friend of mine actually got a concussion at Universal studios cos a dude who wasn't paying attention basically steamrolled her, and then didn't even stop to see if she was ok.

Neanderthal, Sunday, 22 May 2016 13:57 (seven years ago) link

people who stop immediately after walking out of a store... sociopaths.

this week i saw a person fling a cigarette butt onto the road, like while walking down a busy street and chatting to a friend. i was honestly so astonished by this that i came very close to confronting them about it. like... who do they think picks that up? i know i shouldn't expect such a person to have an eyepatch and a hook for a hand but they looked like a normal fairly decent human being - i just couldn't believe it. i did wonder if it could be cultural, like are there european countries where littering like this is normal or okay?

You're kidding, right? People have been putting out their butts on the street and not picking them up as long as there's been smoking. I'm not saying it's right, but ingrained behavior over generations doesn't just vanish overnight. Kind of like smoking itself.

Iago Galdston, Sunday, 22 May 2016 14:19 (seven years ago) link

Do you mean actually throwing it, as opposed to like dropping it on the floor and stamping it out?

the internet's most cossetted petulant manbaby (a hoy hoy), Sunday, 22 May 2016 14:41 (seven years ago) link

yeah that's the distinction i mean. i mean i know people kind of sheepishly or otherwise dump butts outside buildings, but this was like someone walking down a busy street in a nice part of london, not like a carpark outside a pub or whatever. it just struck me as so strange.

japanese mage (LocalGarda), Sunday, 22 May 2016 14:56 (seven years ago) link

I didnt get hit but this one guy got hit by two, one right in the face. It was absolutely vile. Poor guy.

That didnt make me irrationally angry though cos its not irrational to think thats fucking disgusting.

what kind of brain deficiency do you have to have to treat a merge lane in a traffic jam as some kind of magical empty lane that no-one's using

i would love an in-car taser for these assholes that duck out & try to merge back in 500 ft later

and these same assholes then just keep rolling up along side you without even trying to get a break in traffic & just creep until the lane has disappeared like the point is to physically merge with my CAR

sorry, got stuck in a lot of traffic these last couple of days, so much in-car shouting I had to vent

Veg, as long as there's a dotted white lane and no "No Passing" signs around, those cars are in the right and may be helping alleviate traffic.
